A skilled player can make a Human Fighter interesting.

A skilled Dungeon Master can make players excited over a humble Potion of Healing.

A less badly designed game doesn't require mastery to make up for its failings.

A new player shouldnt be punished for choosing a simple, common, relatable heroic archetype.

A GM shouldn't need to resort to Monty Haul to keep players engaged.

Why did you take a perspective on the strengths of simplicity and use it as a springboard into such a negative tangent? Anyhow, I brought up that opinion because, as I've moved to old school gaming, it has become increasingly apparent one needs not lean on "exotic" races (which tend to be overdone these days), tons of monster templates, niche classes which are popular at the moment, magic items that glow brighter than the sun and other superficial means of spicing up a campaign that - more often than not - quickly lose their flavor.
