Michael Hopcroft
Right now I am listening to a performance of Franz Schubert's borderline-superhuman String Quintet in C. Schubert was an incredibly prolific composer, so much so that he would write a work "on spec", put it away, and then forget all about it. The Quintet in C, which adds a second cello to the standard quartet, was found among his papers after his premature death along with innumerable other works. Schubert only lived 31 years, and his working career covered at most fifteen of them. During that time he wrote six hundred songs, seven complete symphonies (ironically his most famous symphony, the eighth, was not complete -- it has only two movements instead of the usual four), numerous chamber pieces, and even two operas (neither of which remain in the repertoire).
