What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

Greeting Herophiles, it was Comic Day on Wednesday and there was nothing there for me. Or rather nothing I wanted to spend money on anyway.

1. What Titles are you buying?

2. What Titles are you reading?

3. What Titles are beyond your comprhension?

1. JSA, Astro City: Dark Age, & Ultimates TPB.

2. Infinite Crisis, Batman (Family), & New Avengers.

3. Warlord (Not by Mike Grell???), Thunderbolts (WTF???), & Everything else Marvel.

Cheers

QM

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

I am buying:

THING

Was buying She-Hulk, but can't find it anymore. Will have to address that with my FLCS.

Fantastic Four

JSA

Legion of Superheroes

Astro City, when it comes out. Also if any more Arrowsmith come out, I'll buy those.

Thunderbolts, but I may not continue unless it gets better.

That's all I can remember, maybe there's another...

Reading but not buying: Nothing

Beyond my comprhension? : I don't comprehend "comprhension", so I don't understand the question. ;) So how about -"Things I've dropped"- I soured hard on Avengers even before Disassembled. I was reading Amazing Spider-Man but once the tie-ins and cross-overs started, I dropped it. I sporadically picked up JLA over the past few years (like for the Busiek Crime Syndicate story) but overall it was very ehhh, so I didn't make it regular. I started into Titans, but crossover messes and impending Liefeld made me drop it.

Thinking about, if I can find them:

Catching up on She-Hulk

Ms. Marvel

some of the "One Year Later" titles (will want to see them first)

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

I am buying:

Cannon God Exaxxion

Blade of the Immortal (but I think it's finished)

Oh! My Goddess

Battle Angel: Last Order (also finished, I think)

Astro City (just started picking it up)

Every once in a while, I think about the Marvel/DC titles, but what I hear about the modern works on this board discourages me from doing so. I've thought about picking up some of those collections of the early Spiderman comics, but haven't gotten around to it.

A common complaint about American comics is that the burden of sixty years of continuity is crippling them. That's a problem that Japanese comics don't have to face. Each title is set in its own world, with no connection at all to any other title in most cases. For the most part, each title is the work of a single artist, which I usually find to be a good thing.

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

I'm buying more than I should be buying. Some of these are on my future list, and some will drop off as they end. Like 52 and Shadowpact aren't out yet, but Seven Soldiers of Victory will go from 3 titles to 1 soon.

Most DC (JLA and JLA Classified, JSA and JSA Classified, Teen Titans, Outsiders, LoSH, Batman, Action Comics, Seven Soldiers of Victory and all linked titles, Secret Six, 52, Infinite Crisis, Warlord, Checkmate, Justice, Ion, Blue Beetle, Shadowpact. What can I say, I like group books.)

Some Marvel (Thunderbolts, Young Avengers, New Avengers...for now, Ultimates, Ultimate FF, Ultimate Spipder-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate iron Man, Iron Man)

GI Joe (Mostly for nostalgia sake and it may get cut soon)

Planetary

Top Ten

Astro City

I dropped Wolverine after realizing they were never going to "fix" him, and I'm no longer collecting Manga because I'm just burnt out on it. Heck, I've been reading manga since Viz comics in the late 80's, so even though they can have some fresh ideas, I've seen most of the stories already and I don't see a staggering amount of originality. The same could be said of American comics, but I'm just more forgiving of those tropes.

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

I and a friend chip in together.... mostly by subscriptions.

Buying: Captain America

New Avengers

Thing

But, I also find used trades when ever I can, and occaisionally get a comic that isn't among those as well.

I read anything I buy. I'm sorry, there's no point for me otherwise... but I also read the trades my friend gets and she reads mine. :) She's bought a lot of Teen Titans stuff for her kids. I get to peek at them ...mhwhahaha.

I like to think I comprehend the stuff I read. Sometimes I see something in them that others might not and vice versa.

If I were wealthy enough, I'd surely be buying a lot more.

I'm seriously considering expanding my collection of Marvel Essentials.

Well, you're making up in quality what you lack in quantity.

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

Catwoman

JLA

Most of the stuff I read these days are reprint collections. For example, I've bought all of the Showcase Presents titles to date, except Jonah Hex.

I guess I just like old school Silver, Golden and early Bronze age stuff.

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

Buying: none.

Due to recently finding a suprisingly large selection at my local public library, though, I've been re-/introducing myself to these in TPB:

Ultimate X-Men (first 13 books - 78 issues! :celebrate )

a few other scattered Ultimate universe books

Astro City (4 books)

Planetary (4 books)

Transmetropolitan (tons of em, oddly enough)

The Authority (just the 2nd book though - more engaging than I expected)

Looks like there's a bunch of JLA & X-Men stuff to put on hold when I'm done with this crop, too, and I'll be combing the catalog for whatever else I can catch up on. Couldn't find any Top Ten, the other title I wanted to check out based on these boards.

I stopped buying long ago from a combination of being poor, the crossover cons (and X-plosion of spinoff titles), and the way the tag-team writers were twisting my favorite characters to ridiculous, soap-opera levels of unrecognizability. I also pretty much hated the ongoing contest for More-Bada**-Than-The-Last-Guy in characters. Reading the synopses on uncannyxmen.net almost makes me want to never pick up an x-title again (except Ultimate, and I'm curious what Whedon's doing (did?) with his book).

But I seem to like the iron age more than I thought I would, so long as there's some writer continuity. If I find myself with unallocated disposable income, I might start buying Ultimate X-Men/FF/Spider-Man, Planetary, and definitely Astro City so far. Gotta try to find that Thing series, too, according to whoever it is on these boards that keeps plugging it. :P

And maybe the library will turn me on to some others, and pull me back in to comics after all.

Re: What Comic Book Titles are you Buying (Not Reading, Buying)

I've been buying mostly the various Spider-Man and X-Men titles as well as New Avengers, Nightwing and Green Lantern. I've also been getting stuff in Marvel's Ultimate line. I normally read all of them but I've either haven't had the time or made time to read any of them and as a result I'm over a year behind in all my reading.

What you don't like Western comics in general or do you have some objection to "Jonah Hex" in particular ?

Indifference to Western comics in general.

I wasn't hugely enthusiastic about getting the Metamorpho volume either, though it actually turned out OK. OK enough that I keep sketching outlines for characters influenced by him. (He's a bit too complicated to directly build).

I've got the Superman Family and Teen Titans volumes on order. I have high hopes, especially for the latter.
