rambo TAS

Which was one of the most controversial afternoon cartoons of the 1980's: Advocacy groups were furious that the character, known for excessive violence in the movies, was seen as an appropriate subject for a children's cartoon. In the end it became a moot point as the series turned out to be a dud in the ratings.

Let's not forget the Godzilla cartoon. Or Conan. Or.... Well, there were quite a few of these.

Based on the Americanized Godzilla movie. I was surprised they bothered. It would have been a decent movie had it not been called Godzilla' date=' though.[/quote']

Enh... even for a giant monster eats NYC movie it had problems.

In Time with Justin Timberlake. The sci-fi premise was good, a few of the actors were good. The problem was that this was a scifi "Bonnie and Clyde", and the "Bonnie and Clyde" part was lacking. The romantic leads had no screen chemistry and the bank robbing managed to be boring.

Batman: Year One was quite good! I never read the comic story arc so I can't compare, but I thought it was pretty darn decent with occaisional bouts of awesome. It's really Gordon's story, but as well told as it is, I don't think any Batman fan would mind. I thought the lines in Bruce's face made him look older /more gaunt than I liked, but then , if this is a typical comic to animation translation, the show itself is probably just being true to the original style. No Kevin Conroy, much sadness.

There's also a Catwoman short...wow. My five year old nephew will not be seeing this. A bit too risque in a scene or two for young minds (Dirty minds are fine). Suffice to say I enjoyed that too ;)

Gangs of New York - Not really a DiCaprio fan, but I rather liked this show. It also inspired me to do a little research. Not surprisingly, the events in the film are entirely fictional. I was also off-turned by the blatant exaggeration of the number of people killed when the militia cracked down on the rioters. Still, for all that, it was an interesting movie that inspired me to think and research. I can never find much fault in media that does that. 3/5 Butcher Knives.

Re: What Have You Watched Recently?

"Heldorado" (1946), starring Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Gabby Hayes.

In this one, Roy is a Nevada Ranger who takes some time off to help out with the Helldorado festival in Las Vegas. ("Helldorado" is the correct spelling, I presume the movie title was misspelled to get past the Hayes Office.) Dale is a spoiled heiress who's made Helldorado Queen and an honorary deputy sheriff for the proceedings. Gabby is a booster and general go-to man for the festivities.

The actual plotline is that black market racketeers are using the casinos in Las Vegas to launder thousand dollar bills never declared as legal income. Roy is asked by the Clark County sheriff to do a little sub rosa investigation, and Dale invites herself along on the strength of her honorary deputy status when a man she knows is murdered.

It was cool to see Las Vegas as it looked before the really big development started; notably there's no night scenes to show off neon signs. There's also no mention of the fact that most of the casinos in the area were themselves owned by racketeers at that point in history. (Nor any mention of the Manhattan Project.) Boulder Dam (aka Hoover Dam) shows up a couple of times.

The songs by Roy and the Sons of the Pioneers were nice; Dale only gets one song, a duet with Roy that she cuts short. The notion that a woman could be an actual deputy sheriff is treated as an absudity, and she's mostly in the way until near the end. Gabby, as always, puts in a fine comic performance.

The outdated sexism made some parts painful to watch, but overall I liked it.
