In general I wouldn't apply penalties to the DEX roll, as that is what I think a DEX roll should be for, reacting quickly to a dangerous situation.
The only times I would impose a penalty to the roll is if they were other factors in play, for example they were doing something else while walking the bridge (like looking at a map or involved in a deep or heated conversation) or other penalties like over encumbered, carrying someone, injured, etc...

I am that Carlos Ortiz who wrote that years ago. I started in 4th Edition with write-ups of Duncan MacLeod and Methos. Then I converted it to 5th Edition a few years later and posted ii in these forums. Someone was kind enough to turn it into a PDF. I'm glad you enjoyed my work.

I don't think they were originally ever intended to be taken seriously. Remember, the original concept came from a pun.

(For those who don't know -- Spoiler Alert -- back in the day (it may still be true) that if you killed a Beholder and cut open it's big, central eye you'd find a diamond. That's because "Beauty is in the eye of a Beholder.")

Past D&D editions had several varieties of "Beholderkin" with a quasi-biological rationale connecting them. Not anymore. I find the new version explicated in Volo's Guide to Monsters actually quite a good bit of Lovecraftiana. To summarize:

Beholders warp the world for miles around just be staying in a place too long. (This has actual mechanical effects.) They don't reproduce biologically: They reproduce when one beholder literally dreams another one into existence, in a fit of self-fulfilling paranoid nightmare. It is not even clear that beholders have biology. Perhaps the reason they have no empathy for other creatures -- seeing them only as food (do they actually need to eat? not sure), pets/slaves, or dangers to be exterminated. Every beholder believes it's the only "real" beholder, and every other beholder is an abomination and a mockery that must be killed on sight.

Beholders don't make a lick of sense, biologically or psychologically. That's the point. They aren't just alien to the worlds they occupy. They are alien to all known existence. They are Things That Should Not Be.

Vulgarian- A rather handsome humanoid with cat like eyes , only a slight face ridge with powers of light manipulation, Vulgarian is built for attention. In more ways that people know- for his power channels excess psychic emotional energy around him to add to his power! The more emotions around him, and not from himself, the more powerful his photokinetic abilities become. So he showboats to please crowds, provokes his foes to anger them, and more! The calmer his opponents the less effective he is, but get him in a crowd of hundreds and his abilities become truly frightening! Of course, the down side is to this is he can end up endangering the very crowds he often relies on.

As it happens,m that's the concept of one of the PCs in my new D&D game. An orc raised by a traveling troupe of gnomish tinkers and entertainers. He still identifies as a gnome, despite the difference in size. Which in my world makes perfect sense to gnomes. Trained as a toymaker like his foster-father; called as a paladin after an encounter with slavers led by a minor demon; currently in the neighborhood watch of the Oddmonger district of the city of Thalassene, where many people find him confusing.

    Update:

    Status of Origins 2020
The Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA), the non-profit organization serving the hobby games industry, today announced that it will postpone the 46th Annual Origins Game Fair, originally scheduled for June 17-21, 2020 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, to October 7-11, 2020.  The tabletop convention attracts more than 20,000 attendees from around the world to central Ohio to play thousands of board games, collectible card games, miniatures and role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons™, Magic: The Gathering™, Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Catan, and hundreds of other titles.

The decision to postpone the convention follows extensive discussions with its membership, the city of Columbus, the Greater Columbus Convention Center, hotel partners, and exhibitors. “The decision to postpone the convention was not one we made lightly,” said GAMA Executive Director, John Stacy. “The safety and well-being of the Origins community is our number one priority. Given the current health situation, we believe that it is best to move the convention to October.”

With the postponement, GAMA also announced that they would be hosting an online gaming convention during the original show weekend, June 19-21, 2020. Origins Online 2020 will be a fully virtual convention for tabletop gaming fans to enjoy from their devices and will feature an Exhibit Hall where attendees can demo and buy games and merchandise. In addition, the virtual convention will offer streaming workshops and educational seminars with guest authors, artists and game designers, plus hundreds of games online that attendees can sign up to participate in.

“We are all in this together. The postponement of the in-person event and introduction of Origins Online is an opportunity for the hobby games industry and broader gaming community to get excited together and come back stronger on the other side of this pandemic,” Stacy continued.
Details regarding the postponement of Origins Game Fair and Origins Online will be shared soon

    Hey Folks,

I am looking for a 3 column template for 6e, but following the 4e 3 column format (i.e. Not including Background or quotes on the first page.). It should have the stats in the proper order, for 6e, and should in most cases, fit on one page with a small sans-serif font (like 4e). It would be nice to include the martial moves , and hit location information, but not necessary. I have tried the Derek  Heimforth 3 column and the Compressed 3 column, but the stat orders were messed up and the compressed was missing the STR stat. Any help would be gratefully accepted, and there is no major rush for this, but i wanted something to display as a PDF Character sheet, that was reasonably complete to reference while playing on Table Top Simulator. Not a lot of negative (wasted) space on the sheet, and density is not a problem as long as it remains legible. Thank you in advance.

I am a person of faith myself, but I don't get this. Not at all. Yes, I love the people I go to church with. No, I don't love them so much that I'm going to risk catching a virulent disease in order to see them once a week. I don't see any kind of logic, faith-based or otherwise, that says that this is okay.

The worldwide leader of my church is a former heart surgeon. He and other church leaders, globally and locally, have gone to great lengths to make sure that church members can worship from home. Local leaders have also given us specific guidelines on how to take care of each other's needs without the benefit of physical proximity.

Another possibility is to use Change Environment (Stunning) with the long lasting adder:

“What did you get me into, Frank?” Lauren Bressler looked at Frank Stone, trying to get a reading from his face.

“Coffee?” the waitress asked. Both Bressler and Stone nodded their assent. When her cup was filled, Bressler wrapped her hands around it. “Would you like to place your order?”

“We're waiting on someone,” Stone told her.

“Then I will check back with you in a bit,” the waitress said with a smile and turned to other customers.

When she was out of earshot, Stone answered Bressler. “What did I get you into? I got you into Special Crimes. Like you wanted.”

    “With a demotion. Thanks.”

    “Only on paper.”

    “What?”

“Your demotion, it's only on paper. It will not be reflected in your jacket. And it shouldn't impact your paycheck.”

“I don't understand,” she responded with a confused look.

“Can't have two captains in the unit. One captain to a precinct. Special Crimes is my precinct.” Stone took a drink of his coffee and silence reigned for a few moments at the table. “I'm tired, Bress. I'm getting old. SCU was set up as a proof of concept. I've been in on it from the beginning. It works. It's necessary. Why do you think we get nice toys from Scott, Kendall, Templar and the others? New York has about the worst infestation of capes. Both good and bad.

“There's a time coming when someone new will need to step up and take over. I was hoping that someone would be you.”

    “Why me?”

Stone chuckled. “You, because I like you. Because I trust you. You're a good cop. With what happened the other night I'd say at least one of them trusts you, as well.” Stone took a drink and gave Bressler a moment to think.

“I didn't think he'd be one of them. Pay the bills, get the tax cuts, but not be one of them.”

“It didn't start with him. It started with his father. Charles Scott wanted a team he could be proud of wearing the corporate colors. First and only time out he got a gang of loose cannons. A couple ended up being killed before they really got going. Two were pretty stand-up. The rest were the kind of people that Special Crimes was set up to stop.”

    “Why does he do it?”

Stone dropped his head a bit and cocked an eye up at Bressler. “All of them have their own reasons.”

    “But what's his reason?”

Stone sipped his coffee before answering. “Honestly, I have found there are two things that drive Jason Scott. His friends and guilt.”

    “I don't understand,” Bressler said.

Nodding, Stone said, “And understanding is one of the things that drives you. Jason buried his mother. A year or two later and he buried his fiance. That would be part of the guilt that drives him. He wasn't able to save her.

“You remember a few years back when Commissioner Grayson's grandson was kidnapped?” Bressler nodded. “They gave strict instructions on the exchange. No cops. No capes. Against orders, against rules, against the kidnappers instructions, I called the Guardians and explained things.”

“They said a rider turned up. Black leathers, gloves, smoked visor. He never took his helmet off.”

Stone nodded. “That was Scott. When he showed up, he talked to me and he talked to the boy's mother. He brought the cash for the exchange. He promised that boy's mom that he would have him home that night. When the instructions came down on where and how to make the drop, he tore off on his bike.”

“I don't see how this is relevant.”

“Bress, you want to understand him. At least beyond trying to hand a murder one on him.”

Bressler smiled. “You have to admit it was a good fit.”

“And he won't hold that against you. My point is, about six hours later, he comes back. With the boy. He's a bloody mess. Several people tried taking the boy from him. It was like he was a robot. Single-mindedly following the programming of his promise. It wasn't until he put that boy in his momma's arms that he stopped. Lucky that we had a couple of his friends handy when he collapsed.”

    “I don't get...”

“I'm not finished. He heals. His body regenerates. He walks in here, you could put a round in him and the only effect it will have is to piss him off. He came back with Grayson's grandson looking like he went to war and walked through Hell.

OMG.  My last post was "shortest Duke post ever" this must be the longest AND the saddest. 😞

Duke, you have lived SUCH a different life from me.  You are probably the epitome of what I think of when I think American.

So DO cry, that is American, DO look after your family, DO think about and look after your neighbours, DO have hope for the future, DO care about what is right because they too are all American.

I don't think our leaders have managed this pandemic well but lessons are being learned and nature has given us the benefit of doing that learning on a "relatively" benign disease.  It could have been more deadly and faster moving.  We have seen the amounts of money that actually CAN be spent making things better, it will make scare stories about spending on other things less credible. There are so many stories of people doing good for their friends and family.

You know what made me cry?  It was so many people, all over the UK, coming out of their respective safe spaces every Thursday night to cheer for the NHS.  That simple thing.

So cry now, be strong in everything else you do and remember that your posts here are one of the reasons I keep coming back.
