Hotspur reacted to LoneWolf in Is there a way to make multiple attacks besides Multi-Attack?
In the Hero System there are always multiple ways to write up a power.  As long as the character bought the powers they are using they have a wide leeway on defining them.  This is the thing that people coming from other games have the hardest time with.  If you are used to a game where everything is defined and you simply choose from a list it can be a shock.

In a Champions game you have to pay character points for any and all attacks.  This means you have to pay for the guns with character points.  There are plenty of examples of a two shot autofire being defined as using two guns.  This just expands it out.  Since you can always choose to not use the autofire purchasing it this way allows you to use the gun(s) normally.

You don’t need to purchase anything else to fire multiple guns besides the guns themselves. The special effect that you are using telekinesis does not cost anything.  If you want to be able to do other things with TK you will need to purchase that.  You can always put the power in a multipower to reduce the cost.

It's tough to provide much without knowing your group.  Their preferences will decide a lot (e.g. maps) and their familiarity with the system is as important as yours - sounds like it's new for everyone.

It may help to have two character sheets.  One is the full-costed abilities sheet used for character design.  The other is for running the character in-game - describe how it works and ignore all the points.

Especially if everyone is learning, only learn what's relevant to the PCs and avoid unfamiliar abilities for opponents early on. Unless a PC has adjustment powers, sensory powers or mental powers, neither do the early bad guys.  You can learn those abilities later, when you're comfortable with the basics.

Nothing wrong with letting players revise their characters, or with a revision if you make a mistake early on (including "turns out that ability is unbalancing") either.

For sure, take player feedback.  But remember they asked you to run - if they don't appreciate the efforts, one of them could always run a game!

Actually, if you can tell us what about Champions appealed to the group, I suspect many here could offer some suggestions to better emulate those elements, and de-emphasize elements that may be less helpful, or even counterproductive.

Fantasy Hero 5th edition, example magic systems section.  11 out of 12 systems presented have Gestures and/or Incantations.  The last does not have the SFX of gestures or incantations so cannot be the magic system used by the OP who mentions gestures and incantations.  The baseline is clearly for Gestures and/or Incantations. All evidence supports OP using a magic system where spells have Gestures or Incantations.
There's one bit of my evidence, still haven't seen any of yours.

You don't get to say you're bowing out unless you actually stop arguing.  Claiming to leave an argument is not a get-last-word-in-uncontested free card.

Do you have a single iota of evidence that Gestures and Incantations aren't in use?  Remember, we're not discussing the vague abstract of all possible magic systems, we're discussing OP's magic system.  And OP mentioned "gestures or incantations".

In this thread, this is the only important part of your post.

the fighters are closing- slowly, but they're closing.  There is no way you are going to outrun them with the driver shorting in and out like it is.  You feel the power surging and dipping, sending ominous reverberations through the steel structure of the ship, as if the ship itself were moaning in pain.

"Where's Fermier?  Get Fermier down here, now!"

    "He's manning Cannon Two, Sir."

"Get his ass down to the engine room, Kid!"

"Sir, there's at least nine bogeys out there, and they're closing fast!  We need him on the cannons!"

Kid, what's the point in shooting if we can't outrun them?!"

    "We're short two gunners, Sir."

"Son, you get Fermier _out_ of that gun blister and down to Engineering _now_, and get your ass _in_ that blister and start blasting!"

    "Captain, I can't shoot a ship's gun!  I don't have a rating--!"

    "Congratulations; you've been promoted!"

"Oh, thanks!  Oh, if only my mother had lived to see this..."

"Another twenty-three minutes and you can tell her yourself if you don't get in the blister and relieve our lead engineer!  Besides, someone tells me we're short two gunners, so unless you can win a crooked trial or breathe vacuum, i'd suggest giving it a hard try!

    "Fermier!"

    "On my way, Skipper!"

    "How bad is it?"

"It's mostly in the power lines, Sir.  Lucky shot, looks like- lucky for us, any way.  The components are solid, but I'm going to have to rig a lot of wiring...."

"How long?  The fighters are closing in and that kid's wasting plasma faster than we can cook it."

"I dont know, Skip; not too long, since Engineering counts as a lab for this and I've got good tools.  Still, it looks like a minus 4, at least."

"Well get your best tools out and roll for all your worth, Fermier!   We are all dead men if you don't get it, and _fast_."

"Don't worry, Sir.  I've got the highest mechanical skills on the boat, and I think I have got just the dice for the job....."

I've played in some of Bill Keyes' Hero games at local conventions, and he did a great job creating thematic sheets showing only what the players needed to play the characters during the adventure.  I think there's a good argument for creating two character sheets for each character - one to use during play, and another to "show the math" that makes the character work.

And I don't feel that deliberately refusing to engage with the topic the OP wants to discuss when they have a question on the grounds that there might be houserules or nonstandard methodologies when the OP suggests standard methodologies and mentions no houserules is constructive.  In fact, I think it's extremely rude to the OP and has no place in a thread where they're looking for rules answers.

Do you have a single iota of evidence that such is the case in OP's game, given their explicit mention of "gestures or incantations" as a trigger for an attack?

You might want to reread some Fantasy Hero books, because Gestures and/or Incantations is in fact the base condition.

I'd do it with a series of multipowers, not multiform.  If Beast Boy gets shot while he's a badger, changing into a dog doesn't heal him.  The change of Body/Stun/End that takes place between multiform swaps doesn't accurately depict Beast Boy.

75 pt Size Multipower -- no growth momentum (-1/4?)
12 lvls Growth, costs end only to activate
6 lvls Shrinking, costs end only to activate

41 pt Movement Multipower -- linked to Growth or Shrinking
18" Flight x4 noncom (really fast bird)
+10" Running (at Spd 5, that's a 60 mph noncom, or about equal to a cheetah)
    10" Swinging (comic book monkeys)
    +10" Swimming
    +6" Leaping (Kangaroos and such)

35 pt Attacks Multipower -- linked to Growth or Shrinking
2D6+1 HKA (up to 5D6-1 w/ Str -- Great White Shark bite, etc)
2" Stretching and +25 Str (Elephant)
    2D6+1 RKA (Electric Eel)
    Darkness (Octopus ink)
    etc

You can also give him some enhanced senses and things, with the limitation that he must take the appropriate form.  I'd make sure he could transform into the creatures you want to use the most, and duplicate their abilities well.  A general limitation or disadvantage of "only up to what a comic book version of this animal can do" would be fine as well.

Personalyl I would go the Multipower wroute.
    Growth
    Shrinking
    Density Increase
Those take care of the Big/Small/Heavy parts

Strenght and other Characteristics takes care of "strong like a elephant" part.

Stretching takes care of stuff like a Elephants trunk.

Maybe throw in some animal sense too, but that requires GM allowance.

Improoved movement like Flight, Tunneling, Swimming, jumping

The speicific animal form he takes is just the special effect of wich slots he uses.

He aquires usefull Characteristics/Powers (game effect) by transforming into animals that have those (special effect). Also note that shape shift only allows you to look different to other peoples senses. The classical beast boy stayed green regardless wich animal he choose (wich means it does not cover sight). If he wants to be hard to spot, he shrinks (to small mamal or fly size).

I only use the acel/decel rules and all those specific things in certain kinds of campaigns, because they add significant complexity and math that tends to slow things down in play.   And honestly, its almost never an issue in source material -- we're trying to simulate comics, here not make a physics simlulator.  So do what the comics do and that means 99% of the time its just not an issue.

Hotspur reacted to Jhamin in Just looking for some feedback on 6th
Long story short: the mechanics are 90% the same as 4th.

    From a Hero system perspective:
The costs for several powers have changed
The details of how several powers work have changed
A couple powers were altered to be subsets of other powers (Transfer is now a Drain and an Aid bought together instead of a separate power for example)
Figured characteristics have been removed (buying more con no longer gives you more stun, you buy each separately).
5th edition allowed characters to throw multiple attacks on one attack action.  Apparently this was *always* intended to be in Hero since 1st, but wording was ambiguous.  Now it isn't, and 6th carries on in this.  It ended up not being as big a deal as was feared, but it's a thing.
Characters are no longer required to have as many disadvantages
There are new powers, new advantages, new ways of doing things, new stuff

The original 6E grew to two books of just rules with extensive examples and options.  For some folks this got to be too much.
The most recent version of the rules is in Champions Complete, which dials back the wordiness quite a bit and fits Hero and Champions back into one book again.
Champions Complete and 6E book 1 and 2 are basically the same rules, Champions Complete is just more concise.

From a Champions Perspective (if you are playing supers)
Starting characters get more points, the feeling was this does a better job of simulating modern comics
Campaign limits/suggestions make characters hit harder and take hits a little less well.  This isnt a change in the rules but a change in the recommended builds.  It makes fights go quicker
*Lots* of stuff in the "Champions Universe" has changed.  When 5th came out the universe was reshaped to only include characters that Hero actually owned and took another crack at lots of characters.  6th ed mostly kept what 5th had put into place.

    Overall:
If you already have all your old books and just want to play with those, go ahead.
If you want to be able to use the more modern books, I'd go ahead & pick up the 6E rules.

Actually, I think a far better product than "Psionic Hero" would be an actual "Game Powered by Hero" Heroic Level psychic game.

Maybe it's a "psychics among us" game - these powers exist, but are well-hidden and people work hard to keep it that way.  Maybe it's "noble psionics protecting the mindblind from psionics who would exploit them", or maybe it's various devious groups, each after their own advantage, and their own advantage alone.  Maybe it's modern world, or future-earth, or cold war earth, or scattered across a futuristic galaxy.

But pick one.  One theme.  One setting.  One way psionic powers work.  Whether normal weapons are typically also used or whether they are not.  Whether psionic powers can generate a force field making targets bulletproof or whether a gun is just as fatal to the most powerful psychic as to an ordinary guy on the street.

And write up that specific game that people can read through, pick some stats, gear and psionic powers and build characters they are ready to play at 2 PM next Saturday.

Not a Book of Infinitie Options you could use to build that game, or a slightly different game, or a completely different game, or a thousand and one different games.  One. Game.  that can be played right from the book.

Thank you for this update! It's quite refreshing.
I am happy to see releases down the line. Reading the below, am I correct to say that all physical releases will be POD only?
Looking forward to it. How "complete" is it? Is it a sourcebook or is it a book with everything you need to play? Does it have a "build it yourself" mentality or does it uses the HERO System to create an Old West gaming experience?
Who is "AC"? How many pages are 50,000 words? 100ish?
The first one is excellent indeed. However, If I may offer my opinion on it, while the content is excellent, the production value is very amateurish. I assume all future physical products will be softcover, blsck and white PODs but hopefully, we can expect much better than what we have seen with the HSBoTI.
I applaud the approach and I will support it. However, I doubt it will be sustainable beyond 1 or 2 books. Just based on Champions International, at $7.50 for a PDF of 16 pages, it will get very expensive for fans to support the sections and get the book. Say you want to combine 8 of them to get a 128 pages supplement, we will have to spend $60 to get the sections (because if not enough people buy the sections, the line will surely be dropped) and then will have to buy the combined book again. Anyway, let's give it a try.
I will support both International and Martial Enemies because it is my only way to support HERO these days. I am really not too enthused about the concept of Patreon but let's see what you come up with.
Totally up for it. Danger International or Justice Inc please. I am for games that use the HERO System as an engine not another rehash of the engine. Fantasy HERO Complete is a good example of what I do not want. It takes no stance at all about what the game is about but is simply another "build it yourself" book.
A game like Justice Inc should not have a how to build powers section. It should have a Pulp Talents section and a Psionic Powers section and perhaps a Eldritch Grimoire section. All pre-built with a cost (or cost per levels) and no +¼, -¾.
Sure the power of HERO is in the creation system but for that you want them to buy HERO, Basic or one of the Complete. How many more do we need?
I don't believe you should waste too much effort on this.
    Thanks to all the creators!

Sicarius, a lot of what you say is true. But what is also true is that US police are way too quick to escalate the situation in far too many cases.
I have seen, both personally and in various media, police turning up to a fraught situation and only making things worse. Instead of calming the situation and separating the factions they come in as Mister Big and start announcing this and saying that when they have NO IDEA what the actual situation is. And, yeah, I've seen that blow up in their face too.
Alternatively, they come in as a first action, everybody gets cuffed. And then they wonder why even the putative victims don't want to talk to them.
And in this case, I don't need to see anything more. I don't need to give ANYONE the benefit of the doubt. They pepper sprayed a nine year old child in the face. There can BE no excuse for this.

My daughter goes through one a year (not as heavy a user).  The "amazon fire os" is, from what I understand, Android with a large chunk of Android ripped out of it (such as Google services-- not the most important (to me, anyway), but one of the first most people notice).  Allegedly, it's still fine and stable.  Our household experience is "not so much; no."

As an old man, I can't say enough for having an honest-to-God keyboard-- so much so that at my last job, I used to carry one of those holographic keyboards in my pocket for when I had to use my phone as a mobile work computer.

I can't make up your mind for you, but even if I were to opt for a tablet (I really don't like tablets.  Remember netbooks?  Those were just _the_ thing for my use: used actual software that I already owned, had actual jacks for peripherals, etc, etc.  Tablets killed them dead), it wouldn't be a Fire; it'd be a full-on Android tablet.  Given a choice, though, I'm always going to go with a laptop / chromebook: more memory, more processor, and an actual keyboard.  Bigger screen is always a plus for watching videos, but again-- that might just be me.

So as to how vigorously to investigate and prosecute the people who organized and participated in the Capitol Insurrection...

My concern is that the FBI and other agencies won't push too hard or attempt too thorough a sweep because of "Weaver Fever," the decades-long policy of treating right-wing anti-government extremists with kid gloves lest they be riled into committing worse acts, as the Ruby Ridge incident helped provoke the Oklahoma City bombing.

I think that policy is wrong. Instead, I offer the advice given in the PoiSci textbook People, Power, and Politics, by John C. Donovan, Richard E. Morgan, and Christian P. Potholm. The chapter on "Revoutionary Change and Counterelites" ends with a section on "Some Practical Advice for the Ruler in Dealing With Revolutionary Counterelites: Machiavelli Brought Up to Date."

"1. Don't worry about the disloyal opposition. There will always be some people who will oppose your government, no matter what you do! Jail these chaps or send them into exile, but don't waste time trying to convert them. Those who are bent on the violent overthrow of the political system should not be placated or coddled. And don't be too quick to grant them amnesty. Remember the examples of Stalin, Castro, and Hitler [23]
[Footnote 23: For advocating the violent overthrow of the Weimar Republic and marching at the head of a group of men bent on the same, Hitler spent one year in a luxurious prison, where he wrote Min Kampf. Once in power, Hitler did not make a similar mistake in dealing with his opponents.]"

So find the organizers, the funders and manufacturers of internet fakery, and Gitmo their asses.

Still, this does not mean that everyone who believes Trump's lies is culpable. The authors also suggest:

"2. Do worry about the loyal opposition. There will always be people who oppose specific policies of your government but who are basically loyal to the system. These people will seek the government's overthrow only if you force them into it. Do not jail, torture, harass, or exile the loyal opposition.
when in doubt, assume the opposition is loyal until definitely proven otherwise. You will lose far more than you will gain by treating this part of the body politic harshly."

Sen. Josh Hawley has definitely placed himself in the "disloyal opposition" camp. ATC noted that he has a Harvard law degree and taught Constitutional law as a college professor. He knows perfectly well that his claims have been false and his actions seditious. Oh, and that First Amendment rights are not violated when a private company decides it doesn't want to publish his book after all.

I'm a little late to answering but the way I'd approach it is "what the hell is everyone not taking which leaves them with 12 points laying around to take a very expensive power"? They have to be gimping themselves on characteristics, skills, perks, or powers in order to have 12 points available.

If everyone has 10 INT, for example, their perception rolls will be crap.

And if everyone has 12 points to spend, why don't the vast majority of the bad guys have Weapons Master?

Honestly, that kind of thing is best addressed during character creation when you can point out the various character's weak spots and have them make adjustments. You can let them know that they don't have enough PER, enough BODY, enough STUN, enough non-combat skills, etc. and that you'll be running a campaign in which if they don't run a fairly balanced character, they'll pay for it.

Or you can tell them that if everyone is a Weapons Master that most everyone they meet will also be a Weapons Master. Combat will tend to be bloody and characters aren't likely to last long.
