Heroes in Champions don't party until after the bad guy goes to jail. They're a team.

Bad guy does a thing. Heroes get wind of it. Heroes engage bad guy. Bad guy gets away after saying how great his plan is. Heroes prepare for round 2. Heroes track down the bad guy and stop him just in time.

Provided purely for Reference. That was one nice thing about Fantasy Hero 6e is it listed how the Talent was built in the description.

Does it specify that you are supposed to pronounce the acronym 'Face-Rip', and make a gesture like Nicholas Cage does in Face Off when he's describing the surgery?

That seems to be a reasonable limit.

When you say "identifiable", do you mean "identifiable as a legit target for the power" or do you mean "Hey! That's Mrs. Jones, the mayor's wife!"?

Yeah its pretty much left up to GM interpretation, my limit is "identifiable" within line of sight.

I want to do a "pick-up" game of Champions, where it's really sandboxy and not overplanned.

I remember games where we basically started with whose Hunteds showed up and winged it from there. This is that kind of game.

It has to be by email, due to time restrictions and internet restrictions on my end.

Submit characters by posting here or by sending a Private Message. Or ask questions. Just send me or post the standard level of character with the standard amount of Disadvantages. You can send me a character in 3rd, 4th, or 5th Edition. I can work across the systems.

    Game is set in 1981.

If there is interest, my plan is to go long term with this idea. But it's also okay if you play a few rounds and drop out.

I like the idea of long snakes emblazoned on the arms ending at the hands.   Obviously done by someone with more time and ability.  And maybe the other end culminates in a belt?

Based on what I've seen and read on various forums, "old school" gaming seems to be enjoying a bit of a resurgence in recent years across the different genres. Personally, I recently bought digital versions of Guardians and Mighty Protectors, which is Villains  & Vigilantes 3rd Edition following decades of legal battle between creators Jeff Dee and Jack Herman and the owners of Fantasy Games Unlimited 😉.

I never played Guardians but remember seeing it on display at my local comic and game store in the early 1990s and Villains & Vigilantes was my first experience in superhero RPGs in the early to mid 1980s before getting into Champions (Third Edition). There are definitely some fun memories playing V&V over the summer as a kid back then. After reading Mighty Protectors recently, it's nice to see the rule updates and revisions that appear to draw a bit from Champions in terms of game mechanics and character generation. I had heard of Super World, Marvel Superheroes (FASERIP), and later learned about Supergame that was first published in the early 1980s, but never had the opportunity to play any of them.

Any old or recent memories of old school superhero RPGs? A part of me feels nostalgic enough to invest in either a pre-owned copy of Guardians or a new copy of Mighty Protectors for that old-school feel and nostalgia.

Several years ago I made my own deluxe edition of the original Marvel RGP, along with all the guidebooks. They look great on my bookshelf but I have yet to actually use them. It's difficult to really get into any other superhero game when Champions exists.

We know that Eurostar are the dangerously competent villains who brag about wrecking economies, but how do they work towards their goals?  What do they ultimately need for endgame success?  How do they support their projects?  What do they prefer to target?  How do they fight that's so different from everybody else?  Questions like that and more.  Might even help me figure out how other practical villains (or heroes) might work as well.

The Shadow Queen was one of the major villains in my last Champions campaign. It worked quite well to have Black Paladin as her lieutenant.

Because of the faerie tale nature of her realm, I used Disney-esque elements in the encounters with the villains and describing her kingdom. Because it amused the Shadow Queen, one of the heroes became involved in a singing contest with Black Paladin, which the fallen knight wasn’t going to do until she spelled him into it. It later became known in that campaign that Black Paladin has “a marvelous singing voice.”

I think the Real Weapon limitation should indicate that the DEF of the weapon cannot do damage to something which has a greater DEF value. So if you state that a broadsword has 4 DEF it should not be able to do BODY damage to an inanimate object of greater than 4 DEF. So if you hit a 5 DEF Oak door (5 being the value listed in FREd for heavy wood) with a broadsword the sword should bounce.

I believe that's part of the Real Weapon Limitation. A sword can't cut through an oak door, and a spiky macey clubby thing can't cut rope.

Planning a Standard Superhero level game (400 points, 75 in Complications). Basically using the Champions Universe (with the occasional odd tidbit ‘borrowed’ from other places). For those unfamiliar with the Champions Universe It’s a kitchen-sink type of setting, heavily influenced by the comics published by ‘The Big Two’. I favor clear distinction between good and evil (very limited shades of grey), with a feel more ‘four-color’ than ‘grim-dark’.

Experience with Hero System not required - I enjoy teaching the system to new players. You can ping me here or via Discord (John Desmarais#6750) if interested or if you have questions.

I remember when "generic" was a thing. Low-priced canned corn that had a black and white label that simply read "Corn" with no colors, pictures, etc. That kind of thing.

There was a fast food restaurant near where I grew up that took up the concept as well. I think it was called The Original Hamburger Stand. They had a limited menu with low prices (hamburgers for 20 cents, cheeseburgers for 25 cents) and black and white wrappers.

I remember when McDonalds used to serve their sandwiches in polystyrene containers. My nerves still cringe when I think of the sound of two such containers rubbing against one another.

Nekkidcarpenter reacted to Sailboat in Quote of the Week from my gaming group...
    From old campaigns long ago:

First mission of the campaign, the heroes defeated generic terrorists, but one of them knocked a terrorist into a VIP hostage, doing body damage to both.  Afterward,  as the press arrives, the hero who hates the press flees, and the other secretive hero also flees, leaving behind the only player with a "cannot tell a lie" limitation to speak on camera.

"And how did the Senator get injured, <superhero>?"

    "He was...uh...struck by a terrorist. "

In a later campaign, a darker and grittier "street-level" game, my character was a Bullseye analogue,  able to add damage and accuracy to any ranged weapon.  Long story short, we were betrayed by a teammate and captured by my arch nemesis.

Because my character could throw almost anything as a weapon, he was bolted to the wall stark naked.  After much embarrassment and frustration, I made a spectacular roll and got free from my bonds, loosening a single bolt.  Hurling the bolt, I smashed the cell door lock.  Hurling the lock fragment, I KOed the approaching guard,  and retrieved his armor-piercing energy pistol -- a very nice weapon that would be outright deadly in my character's hands.

Without waiting to dress, I  ran down the hallway, blowing open the other cell doors to free my team.  The character who had betrayed us (and since apologized and offered to rejoin us) was the last to be freed.  She gasped in alarm as I raced to confront my arch foe:  "Wait!  You're still naked!"

And thus I had the God-given opportunity to deliver my best line of the campaign:

    "I'm not naked.  I  have a gun."

But not to the attack roll, which was the original question.

Also, perception is much more under GM discretion than combat range modifiers are.  If you fire an ordinary ranged weapon from 32m away, you're going to be at -4 to hit even if you can see the target clearly.  But if the GM thinks you can see the target clearly, then you don't have to attempt a PER Roll at all, despite the fact that you would get a -4 for range if the GM made you roll.
