Re: Tropes Revisited: Beautiful Female Martial Artist. Ideas sought

I will eventually be gathering these together for a vote and the most popular will be commissioned.

There are some good suggestions so far but a few of the drawings are a little too explicit and too close to the bikini look.

But there is no reason why the person concerned should be Chinese, Japanese or European. Anyone care to suggest an American Indian, an African or an Asian Indian martial artist

Anyone care to suggest an American Indian, an African or an Asian Indian martial artist[/quote']In my second novel, Realm Hunter: Trail of the Elder Gods*, there will be a character named Wu Mei-Zhen. She's of mixed Chinese, Madagascari, and European descent**, and has had three enhancement surgeries: one to make her eyes look like a cat's; one to implant a V-shaped ampulla of Lorenzini on her forehead; and one to give her two extra arms. She dresses in a black pantsuit with white blouse (kind of like MiB), and fights with a lightsabre in each hand.

*Not available yet; I'll have to sell enough copies of the first one that I can pay Adam Schmidt to do the cover.

**I picture her as being played by Rachel Luttrell of Stargate: Atlantis.

one idea I've been toying around with what if all the kick ass female martial artist super agents came from the same place with centuries of experinence turning women into seductresses spies and assassins. from milady du winter to mesdemoiselles Marie, Black-widow,Nikita and agent 355. all with a code name that changed hands but never died. they all seem to come from a training school which takes problem girls and turns them into super-agents so what if it was all one school or offshoots from one.

If you have to choose just one great look to represent "beautiful female martial artist", IMHO I think you'd really want to go with Chinese. There are many great martial arts from around the world, and of course anyone with time and talent can learn them. But probably the premiere one that most captures the trope would be China and Kung Fu.

It's a whole movie industry!

That's just if you're specifically trying to do a "trope". Which I think implies a little of archtype or cliche. Like a language of short-hands. Other ideas are awesome too, but the more unique you get, the less trope-ish it is.

Along those lines, for the beautiful part the cheongsam or qipao dress looks fantastic. With slits for dramatic kicks, of course. A female in one of those, in a dramatic martial arts pose, conveys the trope right away.

At least in a Hong Kong Theater kind of way, which is neat and fun. Just a thought.

right now my favorite is Renee Montoya's version of "The Question" very simple and elegant well tailored normal cloaths and a freaky mask

alternatively something historical might be fun swashbuckling female swords-woman, pulp era two fisted adventures maybe a gladiatrix or Amazon.

alternatively perhaps going with a less well used warrior culture i know Storn's already done Zulu power armour or i woudl suggest that.

perhaps nepalese ghurkagirl or Sikh Gatka girl with chakram and bundi daggers(actually a really nice option because of all of the unusual martial arts weapons)

for a change of pace from the normal waif fu how about a huge muscular Female Russian Spetnatz with Systema and Sambo for that matter a female USMC gunny using The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program might be fun especially if modled after Second Lieutenant Vanessa James from SGU yum see attached pic)

One of my personal favs was King from "King of Fighters". I just wish she had a smaller bust line. :P

Checked this on Deviant Art and it looked like Nessa and Mai were larger until I used google and found one that I believe equates to what you have said. A couple of the ones on Deviant Art for King are discrete with her toso covered in a shirt bowtie and jacket for one.

Having had a look at some of the images, Ranxerox and Mattthebruins put up good pics and the Cheshire ones from GoldenAge are also good. What I want to avoid is the top being well done so that it is really well thought out but then you get just a pair of knickers or a high cut thong around the waist.

I like the idea of a martial artist in a camo outfit--especially if the top is like a tank top or a sports bra. A headband of some sort would be advisable to keep the sweat out of her eyes--but if she has one, a scene where she pulls it off and shakes her hair free in slow motion is downright mandatory.

Just sayin'.

Just as a clarification my own research into this has taken in such games as King of Fighters, Dead or Alive, Mortal Combat and Street Fighter. Google and Deviantart are great resources especially when they can give you a good pic that is not sexually explicit.

But again I'd like to read your ideas that we can then put to a vote.

I was wondering about whether a mixed message thing might be interesting here. In my Golden Age campaign one of the characters was called Nisei - daughter of Japanese immigrants whose parents were put in the concentration camps after Pearl Harbour.

She was determined to show that she (and her peers) were good american citizens. She would dress in traditional Japanese dress with classic Golden Age stars and stripes trimmings...

Female asian martial artist. Okay, let's see if I can get my brain working. Not sure if it will take redbull, kerosene, or maybe just another iced tea.

Kage (Shadow) - Dressed in a gauzy black shroud-like outfit, the shadows created by this martial artist are what actually strike a blow when she performs her martial motions (ranged martial blows).

Rising Sun - Skin-tight white catsuit, red circle face paint, white hair pulled back into a braid in which are inserted various spikes. She's a hair martial artist, a swing of her mane acting as a whip-like blow or a grapple.

Imouto (Younger Sister) - probably late teens or early twenties, baseball cap with an appropriate cartoon animal emblem (think Pikachu), big bubblegum bubble coming from her lips, fingerless gloves, sleeveless shirt with a bra strap that's slipped down over her arm, a rub-on tattoo on her bicep (probably different each time if she were an ongoing comic book character), Jean shorts, athletic shoes and socks, and possibly a baseball bat or other "pedestrian" object that could be seen as non-martial in normal circumstances.

Neon Dragon - Wearing a one-piece style swimsuit like outfit with knee-high boots but covered over most of her arms and legs by tattoos of various fantastical creatures which alternately glow when she's performing a move (The tiger glows when she's performing a Tiger streak form "tiger martial arts" while a dragon glows when she's doing a leg sweep from Righteous Dragon martial arts, etc.).

Falling Star - a suit of well curved metal armor that, like the above costume, covers her torso like a one-piece swimsuit, with oversized metal cesti on her hands and knee-high metal boots, all crafted from the metal of a fallen meteorite. Silver paint over one eye is in the shape of a star, one ray of which crosses over the other eye and around the side of her head.
