But in fact Saddam is being tried by the Iraqi people, his longtime victims, and they have far more standing to do so than any international body whose chief moral claim is a longstanding history of ineffectualness. posted at 09:20 AM by Glenn Reynolds"
James Gillen
Re: A Thread for Random Musings http://www.andrewsullivan.com: "[W]hen Americans and Brits are actually presented with genuine conservatism - the kind exemplified by Reagan and Thatcher or Gingrich in 1994 - they respond. Explain to people that freedom matters, and why, and they will back it. The culprit here is George W. Bush. What he has done is provide a form of Christianist socialism, and glibly presented it as the continuation of the conservative tradition. He has thereby in one stroke delegitimized conservatism itself by falsely claiming its mantle, and also done the damage that socialists normally do to a society's self-respect, governmental functioning, public finances and individual liberty. It will take a generation to recover. Jonah Goldberg, in a moment of candor last year, predicted that Bush's re-election would be terrible for the conservative movement. He was right. But he voted for the guy. And that was part of conservatism's suicide as well."
Rage
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Man, an old wrestling injury flared up after staying with my girlfriend for a few nights and so I went to a doctor and he sent me to an osteopath. Now, the osteopath treated me and I felt real good for a while, but then I felt bad again, so I went back to the doctor and he's given me this muscle relaxent drug and this pain killer drug. So, i've taken them both and I'm absolutley floored! I don't know, this is better than alcohol!

gewing
Re: A Thread for Random Musings I was looking in a book on animals my wife picked up last night. I learned a couple interesting things. Pangolins are extensively hunted in Africa for food, and their scales are used in Chinese medicine. Their scales are apparently horn, not the rhino horn like compressed hair I had thought they were. The edges of the scales can be razor sharp, so when a pangolin is threatened it can swat a foe with its tail quite effectively. NOT ONLY THAT, but they can project a noxious spray from their anal glands like a skunk. Duikers are a tiny "antelope" from africa. They live in fairly dense undergrowth. The part I did NOT know is that they are known to supplement the vegetation in their diet with insects and small animals. THat blew my mind. The book also said that North American porcupines only have quills 1.5 inches long at max. The ones around here seem to have a lot that are 3-4" long.
