  1. Re: Hollow Earth Expedition! Looked at the book at GENCON and talked with the author for about 10 minutes. I did not buy the book for it had shortcomings that I could not stand. The weapons section (submachine guns for example) had several shortcomings, such as showing weapons (like the Thompson M1) which would not see service until WW2. Also it lacked drawings of some weapons. I know this is not a major problem but for me it was a huge turnoff. I much prefer the award winning Pulp Hero for it has a huge amount of detail in it, I thought this book was bit light in detail. Do not get me wrong it is a pretty book, and has a few interesting ideas, like cool digging machines.
  2. Re: Do PSL vs Hit Locations Unablance the Game?
  3. Re: The use of accents/voices in your game I do not GM Fantasy Hero, but I do GM two Pulp Hero games. My ability to do accents are almost zero (my Russian is good cinematic, my French accent is barely passable, and that is about it). So when I need to do a accent, before the NPC speaks, I say "upper crust British accent" or "German accent" or the like. My players then have to imagine the accent. Does anyone know of a good free source on how to teach people to do accents???
  4. Re: Teleportation: Fiction or Fact? Rumor mill in the computer industry says that IBM made a supercomputer for the NSA (no such agency) a few years ago. About 1000x faster than anything else made. I have read about this in several computer magazines, could be wishful thinking or maybe truth. The reason I put stock in it, IBM patented the ability to use tunneling electron microscopes to make molecules. They understand quantum mechanics as well as anybody on the planet.
  5. Steve: My two pulp games have inspired a pulphero/dark champions question. Firearms (ranged killing attack) (and some HTH KA), some have increased stun mulitpilers (usually +1). When using hit locations stun multiples are fixed. What bonus to stun damage should be given to weapons with increased stun multipliers?? Thanks in advance.
  6. Re: Teen Champions Starting Level? I start teen champions at 75pts + 75 disads for 150pt characters. NO VPP, limited multipowers/elemental powers (with GM permission). Limit powers to 50 active points and limit ED/PD/SPD/OCV. I like the characters weak vs a 350pt villian and then they are forced to work together, but on the other hand, in my game most of the time they are up against normal humans with guns.

  8. Re: All Scots don't have 17 str! For a gunbunny the debates over firearm damage are loads of fun! On serious note, I am a target shooter and the damage that Hero has for some (NOT all) firearms are IMHO not right, some too low, some too high. But that is a gun bunny opinion, from a game balance standpoint the published damage works well.
  9. Re: US Military .45 Pistols I have read that a .40cal or 10mm was still being considered. I have also read in several sources (NRA, IL NRA, blogs, pdf of the request for bids from DOD) that indeed the contract will be eventually issued for a new sidearm. Barretta's 9mm in combat does NOT have the stopping power desired in combat (according to blogs and NRA). Experience in the Middle East has shown that a side arm is nice to have (easy to use in cramped areas like a Hummer and a light to carry "holdout" weapon). Expect VERY spirited competition for this contract. My wife owns a Kimber .45 ACP and loves it. I am so-so with it (I own a whimpy S&W Model 41 22cal target pistol). The only down side of a 45ACP weapon is that is requires constant practice to remain proficient with it. The upside is that is makes a big hole in your target, human or paper. PS:S&W has new line of police/military carbines and pistols. They are mostly plastic/composites but contain much more steel than a comparable Glock. My opinion is that S&W will win the contract with a composite/steel .45ACP weapon.
  10. Re: Cool Things About Last Night's Pulp Game I am the GM of this game. This action also has more reaching effects for the players. The victory over the Italian invaders will increase the ability of the player characters to influence the Ethiopian goverment reaction to the invasion. A note to GM's some combats have effects beyond just killing the bad guys.
  11. Re: Nothing says "Pulp" like a flying wing...or five. FYI: Boeing has a new flying wing concept for a 1500 passenger airliner. A Boeing flying wing may yet fly....
  12. Re: The things I learned playing a gunbunny Great quote. Gave you rep!
  13. Re: New Game "The Unremarkables" - Advice Sought Suggestions: 1) Start the players 10pts below the starting point value you want. Give the players 10xp after the second session of gaming. This will allow the players to add or increase powers after they have played. This helps two issues; one player not quite knowing what power(s) they want; and two the GM idea of the game may not quite be what they orginally built the player for. 2) If you can go to a convention and play as a player in a Champions and Dark Champions event. See how others GM. You may pick up ideas for your own game. More importantly you will pick up GMing style ideas from others that you can use to help make your own game more fun. For example, I play in a Champions game and the GM actually goes around the table every session and asks what is your character doing or has a little mini-adventure just for your character to force everyone to have "screen" time. A great idea IMHO. 3) Allow a "real world" character or two to play. A "gun bunny" or ex-military type. Give this non-paranormal more points but fun real world toys to wreak havoc. Worth the price you paid for them... zero; just ideas for you to "chew on".
  14. Re: Need a few suggestions for new girl on the block Colonel Yarborough has a LOT of pull!
  15. Re: The things I've learned playing a HERO After playing Mr. Squeek a lab rat mentalist: Powerful things come in small packages!
  16. Re: Need a few suggestions for new girl on the block Sorry to nit-pick, but the DC-1 was a prototype. ONLY ONE was built and it was never sold by the Douglas Commerical Airplane company. DC-2's were built in some numbers (150 or so if my memory serves me correctly). DC-2 was 4 feet longer than the DC-1 and more cargo/passenger capacity.
  17. Re: UV vision FYI: UV is also some what effective in jungles or anywhere else large amounts of rotting biological material exists. Many bacteria give of UV light as part of normal metabolsim, so in jungles UV is useful. I read about this when UV was being experimented with in Vietnam.
  18. Re: Advice for a team of unfortunate supers If this is a comedy game, then have fun! If a serious game have them all make new characters.
  19. Re: Funny game voices I do accents generally badly. So when I need to have a NPC say something I will preceede the comment with "in a heavy southern accent" or the like. However, I have a few accents that I do. My refined older lady voice is like Dame Edna (at least that is my wife says it sounds like). I do a uber Nazi accent well (think WWII film Nazi accent). My last pulp game I did a voice of four year girl who thought a PC was a gangster. I did a decent job with her accent, including the screech that little children sometimes do. My advice is try new voices, sometimes you can pull it off.
  20. Re: The things I learned playing a gunbunny TRICK AMMO, lots of it and of as many different types you can think of....
  21. Re: Laser targeter? My firearms instructor only uses laser sights for training. They are for firearms not very good in the field and are actually distracting to the shooter. As to trying to scare the target... that might work. If I were playing Dark Champions I would not use it, I would go for a good optical sight or a laser range finder to determine distance for sniping. Laser range finders are usually infra-red and are not visible to the naked eye.
  22. Re: The Things I've Learned Playing A Mentalist MIND SCAN to count minds in a area, great to avoid that ambush! Need I say more!!!
  23. Re: Heroic Action Points - Do you use them?
  24. Re: The thing's I've learned playing a Brick... Move Through = your friend Buy some combat skill levels to cancel out the penality and you good to go. Remember, kids you have a lot of STUN so if the target takes no knockback it hurts you, but to a non-brick (translate: anyone with low STUN) it often means lights out!
  25. Re: Pulp Era Journalists I have a character that I use in my convention games, a Canadian female journalist. She is a believer in women's equality and is tough as nails, but of course can clean up when needed. Always gets the story and is fearless. Her story is she started as typist at a newspaper then did society reporting then crime reporting (cub reporter route). She is a NPC in my two pulp games. Interviews of your players are a great role-playing experiences!
