1. @bigbywolf - I do not require some special explanation to have an 18 DEX or CON or INT, but I'd be glad to see one. Also, I don't charge extra points for 18 - 20 STR, though a GM is free to alter Normal Human Maxima as he sees fit. I don't like to see high STR with little or no explanation, ala Seeker the human martial artist, STR 25. One of my crew mentioned that Bolo Yeung is also a martial artist. I replied, The Beast from the East was also nicknamed the Chinese Hercules after becoming Mr. Hong Kong bodybuilding champion. He held the title for ten years. His best "dead lift" exceeded 700lbs. This is a much better explanation for having a STR that exceeds 17 than "I know martial arts." Seeker rhymes with Weaker. I realize that high INT is how quick-witted you are, how rapidly you put things together, not how smart you are. However, I tend to inappropriately relate INT to IQ, anyway. So, I like to say that since 133 IQ is near-genius, above the two standard deviations of the mean, you could divide that figure by ten for a 13 INT, if you like. It could also be argued that I'm undervaluing the 133 IQ, since that's within the top 5%, or that it is irrelevant, per the quick-witted RAW (rules as written). @Cassandra - a remote control on the weapons belt, thanks for the clarification! I don't fancy the aircraft using the character's END, though.
2. Of course, ideally, STR / INT / EGO should be concept-driven. That said, 50 or 55 STR, 1/2 END crunches nicely. Speaking of crunchy, you could also buy a Mental version of Combat Luck for our Brick, Iron Will (hey, not a bad Brick name!)... Iron Will: ___ Mental Defense, Awareness Based (1/2), Non-persistent (-1/4) Thus, Iron Will has to "see" the attack coming to resist it. That works more often than not. Maybe Iron Will used to be a hockey goalie. I suggest the most iconic hockey team today is the Detroit Red Wings. Let the furor ensue.
3. Feline animen gotta have cat eyes!
4. Possible names for breed of mankind that had its lifespan extended to 800 years - *Fu Manchus *Methuselahs *Old Ones *Fey or Fey Folk *Vamps *____________________(your suggestion) Of course, these Elders could have more than one nickname, but one should be primary, and no more than several would make the cut as strange aeons elapsed.
5. A version of this may come in handy for us, thanks! An aircraft based on a Weapons Belt Multipower? Please explain. For your Male version, I'd dial the STR down to 15. STR 18 is world class in the games that I GM. There is a "400" club in pro football, for the elite who can bench press that many pounds. Most real life martial artists can't deadlift 660 pounds. if you purchase more than 17 STR, you must include a plausible explanation for it in your Background or addendum. "I know Kung Fu," let alone "I know Comic Book Martial Arts," will not suffice. Now, something like "I am a large mesomorph and I work out four hours a day like Doc Savage" works, among other things. I remember figuring that Doc Savage had a 20-25 STR from reading the first three or four adventures. At one point he was carrying around a 600 pound spar in case he stepped on a trap door. Might could make a case for Tarzan or Conan having a similar strength level; Doc has his regimen, Tarzan wrestles with gorillas, Conan apparently wrestled with bulls (he broke their necks with his bare hands). Maybe a 15 STR with an "easy push": 5-10 extra STR on an END reserve that requires an EGO roll to activate (and/or Extra Time, Concentrate, Incantation[Om Mani Padme Amadalla]), and an extremly low REC rate (hours). This would allow amazing feats of strength, but not at a moment's notice, nor all the time. -wkjackson Re: Sleep Gas...as you know, there's *so* many targets that 3d6 NND will not stun, let alone KO. As such, I recommend some form of 6d6 Suppress STUN instead, Continuing Charges.
6. Also, sometimes, there's a distinction, how the police get along with them. Being registered does not always mean the authorities are helpful. Real life analogs abound. However, registration may help you with liability, especially if you are a government employee. Good Samaritan law(s) may help you whether you are registered or not. In our local Dark Champions campaign, Shadows Over Detroit, unregistered vigilante The Kraken, my player character, is consistently and proactively helpful to the authorities, more so than Spider-Man, likewise reputedly killing no one, maiming no one, and gets no love from the local police. A rookie cop shot at him. Even if he were registered, this attitude would persist, though he would shot at by the po-po less frequently, I suspect.
7. 1920s Mongolia, which also works for Pulp games, natch. Read Beasts, Men and Gods by Ferdinand Ossendowski. Once I picked it up, I did not put it down until it was finished.. Adventure, revolution, politics, spies, travel, eastern religions, geology, survival are just a short list of items covered in this compelling book. -Robert Ferguson, February 18, 2009 After Kolchak's defeat in 1920, Ossendowski joined a group of Poles and White Russians trying to escape from communist-controlled Siberia to India through Mongolia, China and Tibet. After a journey of several thousand miles the group reached Chinese-controlled Mongolia, only to be stopped there by the take-over of the country led by mysterious Baron Roman Ungern von Sternberg. The Baron was a mystic who was fascinated by the beliefs and religions of the Far East such as Buddhism and Lamaism, and who believed himself to be a reincarnation of Kangchendzönga, the Mongolian god of war. Ungern-Sternberg's philosophy was an exceptionally muddled mixture of Russian nationalism with Chinese and Mongol beliefs. However he also proved to be an exceptional military commander and his forces grew rapidly. Ossendowski joined the baron's army as a commanding officer of one of the self-defense troops. He also briefly became Ungern von Sternberg's political advisor and chief of intelligence. Little is known of his service at the latter post, which adds to Ossendowski's legend as a mysterious person. In late 1920 he was sent with a diplomatic mission to Japan and then the USA, never to return to Mongolia. Some writers believe that Ossendowski was one of the people who hid the semi-mythical treasures of the Bloody Baron. After his arrival to New York, Ossendowski started to work for the Polish diplomatic service and possibly as a spy. At the same time, in late 1921 he published his first English language book: Beasts, Men and Gods. The novel, a description of his travels during the Russian Civil War and the wars led by the Bloody Baron, became a striking success and a best-seller. In 1923 it was translated into Polish and then into several other languages. Check out the fascinating section and chapter titles- PART I. DRAWING LOTS WITH DEATH CHAPTER I. INTO THE FORESTS II. 8. Also consider S-Damage, from Ninja Hero Errata by Aaron Allston, as follows- After years playing the current Hero System martial arts rules, I have to say that I think that the NND maneuver element presented in those rules is broken. It results in maneuvers that just aren't viable. In the movies, a "nerve strike" maneuver is supposed to momentarily stun the bad guys, but in practice, the NND nerve strike maneuvers don't do this even occasionally until they reach 5d6 and 6d6 levels of damage. My approach to fixing the problem in my own campaigns has been to introduce a new type of maneuver damage, adding it to the chart of damage types. The new type is called S-Damage, for "Stunning Damage." The cost is identical with that of K-Damage. It also functions identically with K-Damage, with one important exceptions: It does no actual killing damage, just STUN. In use, a character hits a victim with an S-Damage maneuver, rolls thedamage, and calculates the STUN normally... but the victim only takes the STUN, not the killing damage. This type of damage simulates a nerve strike with the following characteristics: (1) The stronger the character is, the harder he can hit with the maneuver, doing more damage; and (2) Body armor stops some of the STUN damage being transmitted, but doesn't eliminate all maneuver effects (unlike NND{1} from page 12 of Ninja Hero). In playtest, this has led to maneuvers doing a wider range of STUN damage (from negligible to remarkable) than NND Damage-based maneuvers. Nerve strikes are still chancy, but they are successful more often, and occasionally yield spectacular results. This rule was proposed to Hero Games for Ultimate Martial Artist, but errors on my part in describing it led to it being altered to a form even less functional than NND Damage and then being dropped from the draft.
9. Here's an early version (5th edition) of my current martial artist. He is built using the Custom Maneuvers rules. Tomato juice washes away the funk from his stink bombs. I recommend flash and/or smoke pellets or such to deal with crowds of enemies. His poise and bearing add imaginery inches to his height. The Kraken wears dark gray baggy samurai clothes over a deep hood hiding his six-eyed fright mask. His utility belt holds only medical gear - other items are secreted in hidden pockets. Handsome Steve Vu usually wears a black dress jacket, no tie.

Background: Steve Vu, a young Asian American martial arts master, spent three years looking for a mysterious place called "The Lost and Found Emporium." He finally tracked it down in a back room of All Star Books in Detroit, but once inside, he found the place had no owner or any staff. Browsing around, Steve ran across an elderly lady, who walked through a door, apparently from downtown Fort Lauderdale, looking for lost time. He was not interested in her story, but suddenly, he saw an orb of light which tried to point him to something. Following the orb, which the woman did not see, he found a cage with mice with instructions to rub them until they calm down. Believing that this was her chance to win back her lost time, the woman tried to do so, but the mice scatter away before she managed to do it. She broke down in tears. Steve just condescendingly quipped, "Them's the breaks," and walked away. The next person Steve met was an elderly man, who came to the emporium by accident. He eventually admitted he lost the respect of his children, and Steve grudgingly pointed him (with the help of the orb) to a mirror, which he should look at for no less than five and a half minutes. The man began the procedure, but was disgusted by what he saw - a distorted, monsterous image of him. Unable to control himself, he smashed the mirror, then realized what he had done. And just like with the old woman, Steve just shook his head and left. As he walked away from the man, Steve was confronted by Stella, who scolded him for his lack of compassion. Steve admitted that it was his compassion that he was after, explaining how he lost it years ago due to racial intolerance he encountered in his life. He mentioned the murder of Vincent Chin, which was an important event for the Asian American community in the USA. Stella offered him a deal - she would find his compassion if she found her lost item, which she would not reveal. Steve agreed, and followed the orb to an old thermos, which released a stream of vapor. After inhaling the vapor, Stella could not stop giggling - she got her sense of humor back. She then pointed Steve to his lost belonging, in the shape of three flasks, with one containing his compassion. Unable to choose, Steve grabbed the two biggest one and smashed them, and gained his integrity and childhood memories back. But the third flask - a small white test tube - rolled away from him, and was lost for good. Steve was visibly unhappy, but soon, he realized he did gain a lot back, and that compassion came along with it to some extent. Feeling like a man reborn, Steve realized it was his destiny to help other poor unfortunate souls find what they're looking for, and Stella stayed with him as his assistant. They started off with the ones who had their chance - the elderly man and woman - as even lost chances can be recovered. In the emporium, Steve found a utility belt filled with non-lethal munitions and tools, a fright mask, an armored jumpsuit, and a squid amulet. The amulet imbued him with several cephalopod traits, even when he was not wearing it. He took this as a sign that, with his martial arts mastery and his new-found integrity and compassion, he should take his resources to the street, covertly patrolling Detroit to protect the people. He found that the belt mysteriously reloaded itself each time it was returned to the emporium. Likewise, there was alway petty cash in a cigar box and a enigmatically changing variety of fresh food in the emporium icebox. No utility or property tax bills or the like ever found their way to the emporium. -based on "Wong's Lost and Found Emporium", by William F. 10. Ghost-angel, I should have asked you the Buddhist question re: Mrs. Steel, since it may be a prerequisite to learning Angampora.
11. Or on a quest to retrieve it.
12. The pic below* works well for a shield / swan maiden type like Hervor, and her armor could be a Focus for resistant DEF. Oh, and I should have directed the Buddhist question to ghost-angel, since you may have to be Buddhist to be eligible to learn Angampora martial arts. My bad. *Lightning, from Final Fantasy XIII

And now the rant- I saw mostly positive reviews of this book, and several bloggers who were offended that the author was not Asian - he's an Aussie. I feel this is an over-reaction, esp. since he's not writing about a version of *any* actual Asians, or even a version of actual Asia. He doesn't use the term Japan or Nippon or the like. While I generally prefer authentic experiences, some tributes are worthy. Of course, we all draw the line differently- here's my preferences; Genghis Khan movie lead actor: Chow Yun-Fat or a talented Mongol or other talented Asian, not Mickey Rourke. 14. There are many possible great names for this character. Schloss (German: Castle) comes to mind. I'd stick with your early choice, Hervor, and have her pursued by Volund, aka Wayland the Smith, who believes she is the reincarnation of his runaway bride! Is she Buddhist?
15. WWII German supers (Donner, Blitzen, Schloss, etc.) suggests that there may well be French supers too (The Sun King, Count of Saint-Germain, Fleur-de-lys, etc). Maybe the French supers existence is secret until the Maginot Line assault. Good convention game?
16. Bengalelf - your kudos were well earned - that is supa!
17. I've picked up new comics weekly for decades, leafing through the comics in question - not worth purchase IMHO.
18. What's the point cost? Never mind, here it is; 4 points, -2 DCV.
19. More to the point, bemoaning means "complaining" to me. The top of my post was a quote from Killer Shrike, post #29. My intention was to make that clear at the onset, but I'm not great at using this new forum format.
20. 'Preciate these finds and all your shares. For this batch, the windblown dude is my favorite.
21. Someone who likes 5th edition better than 6e are free to continue playing 5e. This seems like an imminently more sensible approach to me than continuing to bemoan the lack of figureds several years after the fact. But that's just me I guess. -Killer Shrike, post #29 And, of course, some of us do just that, sans moaning. I suspect a majority of current 5e GMs and players do so without complaining about 6e on this forum.
22. Either, as a player and as a GM, and my players are on board with both. Of course, professionally-published settings made from scratch also include materials that have never been professionally released as rpg game resources. An example might be a Game of Thrones rpg campaign, though there is such a board game and card game. The next game I'm working on is a heavy mix of fiction and fact, in the wuxia tradition, Han Era ancient Hong Kong Feng Shui Champions- games.groups.yahoo.com/group/SonsOfTheDragon/
23. A consequence of this and the like (hurling themselves off cliffs, etc.) is that some of our heroes who still have an action will try to save the lemmings before understanding the whole picture...and afterwards, too. Heh.
24. Re: Running older scenarios comradeDa and y'all may have noticed that the advantage to period campaigns is the (usually vast*) period material available, including real and quasi-real adventure seeds, in yearbooks, periodicals, interwebs, etc. *less so for the Han dynasty campaign linked below.
