...For making Fantasy HERO Battlegrounds such a good-looking book, both externally (the cover) and internally (the awesome maps). I think these are actually the best looking floor plans I have ever seen in any gaming book. Well done, and may DOJ have the good sense and taste to employ your services in many future projects.

How does one go about a spell that either undoes the Luck of a lucky character (Dispel Luck?) or makes a character inclucky (Unluckk, UAO?) for the duration of the spell? The catser's onbivous hope is that the bungling target will not survive the duration of the spell, or will be more vulnerable to the user's attacks. Spewaking of which, how does one use magic to give characters temporary disadvatnages such as Unluck or Social Disadvantages (I can't think of a worse Social Disadavnateg than reeking of corpse without the ability to wash it off until the necromancer takes off the spell)? Can one use a spell to cause a character to become Huinted by someone who would no…

I was shooting through my copy of Fantasy Hero again, and noticed the term Doulocracy on page 320, listed as a form of government. It means, according to the book, Government by Slaves. How would such a government system work? Why wouldn't the first bill passed be "We're free, We're free"? Could it maybe be a little like Ancient China, with its Eunuch Beurocrats? I really am curious about this. Any thoughts?

Anyone want more Caleon? Here's a bit... ------------------------------------------------- Sisterhood of the Anshandii From the magical traditions of the Elzar and the lessons of the Empire of Pelkoryad, the culture of the Elowan emerged. The Sisterhood is a facet of this culture. Elves are a very magical race, and as children of Elves, the Elowan are quite adept at the Arts. Pelkoryad had many a great wizard itself. It is taught that the Pelkoryadi did not respect their power and were thus doomed. The Anshandii teach respect for power, magic power specially. The Doom That Came To Pelkoryad After a thousand years, Pelkoryad, they of enlightened exista…

This site is described as "the only isolated temple willing to train priestesses" in the Hergeshite lands. To this, I say: Huh!? The book goes into great detail about how the Hergeshite religion is heavily misogynistic. I can't imagine that the Heirakte and Lataro would allow Hergeshite priestesses to exist, no matter how far out in the countryside they were. And what would a female Hergeshite priestess even do? I find it very hard to believe that she could ever practice her chosen trade successfully. So...was this just a typo or was the Hergeshite priesthood's attitude toward women overstated or what?

I was curious how many people have run campaigns that allow the deadly blow talent. To me it seems overly powerful for a heroic campaign. Two levels of Deadly Blow with swords can give someone who does 1d+1 of KD normally a 3d+1 KD attack. Let's consider this: 3d+1 KD would do 11 to 12 BODY damage on average (which is a little much in my opinion); this would yield an approximate average of 22 to 36 STUN damage! Now, it would take a very tough, fully armored knight to have the slightest chance of not being stunned after every hit. Furthermore, it just seems to trivialize heavy warriors with high STR. There doesn't seem much use in having a high STR if you …

The one advanatge of the d20 boom is that it has produced a ton of characer concepts that are cool additions to fantasy agmes, even if kept very rare for whatever reason. "Splatbooks"of all varieties are full of classes that you can build a character coincept around. What I'm wondering is what it would take to convert some of these classes to FH paakage deals, like some of the classes in the new Complete Warrior and Complete Devine books (i own the first but not the second), not to mention books like Oriental Adventures and the various worldbooks. besdies, I;'ve always wanted to set a FH campaign on one of the really popular fantasy worlds and see how the different r…

I was going to work on these for a character but the campaign ended. Summon animals came to me (pun intended) after our characters were stampeded by a herd of a thousand elk. It was very painful. There would be two versions of this. Normal summoning - animals are frequently attracted by salt and possibly the scent of some other food. The ranger either carries salt or creates a mix of minerals from antlers and bones and uses it to summon a small number of deer or the like (lots of extra time). Or they could use some other food or herb to attract a particular type of animal or group of animals (bear, crow, vulture, etc) that are attracted by the scent. …

Let's say you have a spell, that spell is affected by the local magic field. The field varies in strength day by day, and the "direction" the magic flows can affect the difficulty of various effects. (Not by much, mind you, just +/-2 on your RSR (Magic) Roll) Travelling via magic (Flight, Teleport, Magical Bird Legs spells) is harder "Upstream" than "Downstream" with reference to the magical field. (END cost can double or be halved depending on direction) Oh... and botched spells can create short-lived "rapids" and "turbulence" in the field, introducing all sorts of headaches. (Creating a rapidly flickering bonus/penalty situation for a brief period, and p…

Created mine the other night in a fit of insomnia. Personally I've been rather fond of tracing linguistic cues but have hesitated in creating my own as the sheer volume of details to obtain in order to make them truly accurate are beyond my time. but here is mine. It's broken down into 4 major language groups based on the genetic structure of vocal cords and then divied up by species and cultures. My hoe is to expand this considerably into trade tongues and secret, mystical and religious cants as well.

I have a player that would like to make a PC have their main power (almost only power) be transfer (150/75 points characters.) When ever I look at that power I think it could easy cause an imbalance in the game. If the target is with out power defense (as most don't), point for point, a transfer attack is more powerful then a KA, ... or am I over reacting. I know as the GM I could put out more enemies or just give enemies power defense, but I don't want to do that. It doesn’t seem right to do that just to make the PC less powerful. What are some GMs and players experience using transfer in a game? Thanks Drakkenkin

I was enjoying reading my copy of Fantasy Hero Battlegrounds for inspiration for DexCon this weekend, and I noticed something that escaped my attention before. Only about half of the short bits in the back include the "... in Ambrethel" sidebar that accompanies all the other parts of the book. Did I miss them, or did they get excluded for some reason?

Has anyone based their Fantasy HERO games around feudal Japan as a a setting? There are all sorts of interesting things you could do with it. The samurai mindest is ideal for fantasy, and samurai make ideal adventuring characters 9especialoly wandering ronin who could be called upon to face viturally any situation. Magic could be provided by the powers of Shinto priests and miko (shrine maidens) who are in tunr with the spirit world, by Buddhist mionks and priests. jaoansese mythology is full of monsters and creatures who could be thrown into a game, from demonic oni to their unique varieties of vampires and shapeshifters. Many japanese fantasy campaigns may ver…

I am thinking about purchasing the TA book along with MM&M for my upcoming fantasy hero game. I'm probably going to buy it regardless of the answers I get, but I like to pretend i'm a picky buyer, even though I buy every hero book that comes my way Anyway, for those of you who own it, I got a couple questions for you: 1. What do you think of the magic system? Is it well balanced? Cumbersome? Easy? This will be my first Fantasy game as before we played champions (though I am a d&d vet) and for a few of my players this will be their first hero game period. So, my main concern is how simple yet good is the magic system? 2. I have heard differen…

Here are a few facts... Spells are called Matrices (Sing: Matrix) Anyone can be a Spell caster with proper training. [RSR] Those who do not need training are Nye, sometimes called a Mage. [NoRSR] Because of the formulaic nature of Magic, the Spellcaster’s matrices are each a formula, a discrete spell. [No VPPs] The longer one works the magic, the more powerful the spell. [??] Opposing spell casters can use specialized counter-magics to prevent casting. [dispel ] So... what about the "...longer one casts..." how do we do this? Is there a great big store of magical power points lying around somewhere? Or do we get a limitation on the u…

Hi guys, new here and pretty new to 5e. I am just about to start world building for a new campaign which i want to be ongoing and longlasting. Have decided to use Fantasy Hero/Hero system for the campaign as i wish to build the world from scratch. Have used many other settings in the past including FR, Dragonlance and Runequest but have never been really happy as thry just were not exactly what I required. I want Solem to be very classical fantasy (think LOTR or even Narnia) with many of those great fantasy elements hopefully given a slight twist. Blended with this I want a large dash of dark fantasy influences such as Conan, Warhammer or the Wheel of time nov…

First off, this is kind of a long post. But I am very excited to finally start a Fantasy Hero game!!! (Well, okay, I am pressing one person into playing without giving her a choice.) As with everyone else, I am toying with the "supernatural" powers arena to give player(s) more options and adopt what I think is neat. Given all the posts on that topic lately, hopefully people have specific suggestions for me. Specifically, I want to mesh the current default magic system (no framework and 1/3 rest cost) to Killer Shrike's magic classes (different ways of accessing magic) and streamline it a bit (for my player(s) who do not like to read and get confused easily). So,…

Hello all This is for a Fantasy Hero game Low on the Magic but magic is still around. He has inate magical abilities of shadow, subtle ones, not overt. What do you think of this as a disadvantage for one of my players. He wanted to have a touch which was disturbing, odd, cool/cold. A drain damage shield was just too expensive and he didn't really see it as an attack just like the feel of it. I thought to make it a physical limitation. Occurs only when touched by someone, or they make a Perception roll at -5 plus range modifier. If they do touch him or make the roll they would have have a -3 to all Interaction rolls involving him. He would just wierd/scare…

Some call it Charisms. Others just call it Miracles. Whatever one should call it isn't really relevant. Though, perhaps; Prophets make an appearance in your game. If so, maybe you can help. Some powers of the Prophets: Healing, Precognition, Parting the Sea, Tongues, Summoning/Banishing Angels/Demons etc. A big etc. I am currently thinking about using VPP with the Cosmic Powers Ad (+2). Though, this is about as far as I have gotten. I am not sure about the Pool amount or Control Cost amount. Any help would be nice.

I have an idea about a style of magic that is bound up in a person, but usable only with a certain class of weapons... For example... A person might know a special technique for hitting harder (Bonus Damage, right?). The technique only works when one has a sword... any sword. So is that a Focus? I think if it is, it's not much of one.

Here is a spell idea I have for an upcoming game - Sword Shatter - This spell focuses negative energy into the blade of a sword, dagger, or other small metalic object, and damages it from the inside to cause it to shatter into many small pieces that explode outwards like within an inch radius. This is mainly used for small metalic objects and bladed weapons up to 4 ft in length. How would you build this spell?

Evarina's Tiny Charms The adventuring wizard Evarina determined, in her many adventures, that certain items would be very handy indeed to have on some occasions, but that those items were almost never at hand because they were a very, very unhandy to carry about. With this in mind, she set out to remedy the situation through the clever application of magic. This spell is the result. What it does, in short, is transform an object from its normal state of being into a tiny silver representation of that item with a loop and a few links of fine chain attached. The cleverness comes with the fact that the transformation can be broken, returning the object to its original …
