I pulled out my copy of this today, and went into some depth with the system, rather than the cursory look-over I gave it when I first got the book. Has anyone actually tried using this? I don't think Bonewits ever used any sort of playtest on his game system. The biggest stumbling block I've found is that while he gives 26 Laws of Magic, his example spells use only five, and I can't figure out just why some spells use the Law of Knowledge and others don't, and I can't figure out why some of the laws aren't used at all, or even how some of the laws would ever be applied. I was thinking that maybe constructing spells under this system and converting them to Her…

Hiya Gang, I was wondering if people follow the package deals to the letter or have some neat house rules. I'm entertaining the idea of allowing the racial packages' disads not counting towards the actual disad totals ... has anyone toyed with this?

Both books are now available for $26.99 in the Online Store. As usual, damaged copies are also available for $5 less. And for those who are bound to ask, here's the skinny on damaged books from the Online Store FAQ: Q. Some of the books in the Online Store say that they are "damaged". What exactly does that mean? A. The books have bent corners, scuffed spines and other such cosmetic abberations that caused the distributors to send them back to us. All of the pages are in the books and they are all legible. Perfectly usable books.

Got involved in a D&D game. Long story. Anyway, my character decided she shou have a battle cry based on the Dozens, specifically "Yor Momma" insults. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Now I need some Momma one liners approperate for the milenu. "Yor Momma so Ugly, she had to hanf a lamb chop from her neck to get the warg to play wit her!" "Yor Momma so bowlegged, when she sits around the dungeon, she sits around the dungeon." "Yor Momma so fat, a halfling mistook her for a housing development." Any suggestions?

Hey, gang, I could use a little help from the myth-mavens among ye: As part of a proposed campaign story arc, I'm attempting to compile a list of prominent magic rings from myth and folklore of any tradition. I'm deliberately avoiding rings created by modern fantasy novelists. So far I have: Odin's self-replicating ring Draupnir; Solomon's seal-ring with which he summoned and controlled the jinn; Andvari's cursed ring that was the downfall of Siegfried; The jinni-conjuring ring worn by Aladdin. Can anyone add anything to this list? I'd be grateful for any assistance.

Any ideas on campaign setting, and in particular rules for the Power Rings? They seem connected to the dreaming cities, where all the energy horde of a million years' spacefaring is accumulated, and I think the rings are terminals to cue the cities for Transforms and such. I'm wondering if anyone tried to HERO this milieu.

For those who are intrested White Wolf is re-releasing the City State of the Invicible OverLord. It'll be out Oct 4th @ a cost of $35 Ok, for those out of the loop or too young to remember. The City State was to cities what Tomb of Horrors is to dungeons...um..ok...maybe that's wrong. Think New York City transplanted to a Fantasy setting. Anything you want you can find in this town and there is enough going on that anything you want to plan is workable. Temples to almost any diety you can think of (even possible underground shrines to outlawed ones), Theives Guilds vying for control, and enough flea markets your pickpocket will sigh like a giddy lil school girl loo…

Rob was heading home after a gruelling day at the kiln. The blacksmith took his leasure, having no hurries since the evenmeal wasn't until the sun touched the hills to the east, and that was a while away. He had sight of his house when he suddenly smelt a heavy, cloying odour, the smell of flesh in decay. He stopped, looking about the path into the bracken beyond the ditch, to see if he could spot the source of the stench. A wailing arose from the dead undergrowth: "Oh no! Not him! Please, not him! Please! No!" A shape leapt up and charged at Rob, an human shape with gleaming, white eyes and dripping fangs; bloated, wormstung features and a constant gibbering:…

Turakian age, and my own setting have multiple magic skills. If I want to buy skill levels in all magic skills - is that a 3 or 5 or 8 point skill level? I want to reflect that some of the races in my setting have a natural control of magic (pixies in my present case), and giving them skill levels for magic skills seems an ideal way to do it.

In the paying full price for magic thread, someone again mentioned making every character pay points for everything. I've thought about this before, and can see some real possibilities for it. In games where the PCs aren't constantly collecting magic items as they go, or trading in the +2 sword for a +3 sword without thinking twice, it seems like this would work well. I would really like to try that style of play. I mean, how many characters in literature ditch their family armor for some suit they picked up off a battle field? Or sell their fathers sword once they find a better one in a tomb? In most games I've been in, that happens constantly. And I suppose…

Hitting Versus Damage
by Guest taxboy4- 16 replies

Hitting versus Damage Got to say the thing I really loved about Role Master was the combat system's take that the better you hit the more damage you did. I GM but it grots me off in Fantasy Hero you can shoot someone with a bow and roll a 5 to hit but then roll 1 point of Body and it bounces off. Sure using aimed shots can help but if you hit really well - esp in hand to hand shouldn't the damage be linked. Anybody modified the rules to do this? I tried a minimum damage table by Damage Class based on how much you exceeded your level to hit (PCS only - else too dangerous for the PC's!!!) Thoughts and / or commets?

This may be tied to the Asian Bestiary project somewhat, but I felt it might be of some use here too. This is a link to an online comicbook called Tikbalang Nation... a fantasy setting created by Jason Banico and co-created Gener Pedrina. Here's the "cover" with a Black Tikbalang (horned). You can find the online comic here.

OK I have a mage in my campaign who has an animate object spell. It is built as a summon, 2x 42 point characters, slavishly loyal. It has -3/4 RSR which is subject to Skill vs. Skill, -1/2 Lockout (can't cast other spells while animated objects are in use), -1/4 Conditional: Must have objects to animate, and -1/4 Incantations. I'm wondering if this covers this spell properly or not. The basic concept is that he animates the object, giving it a semblance of life so long as he keeps the spell up. It does not cost him endurance or require any detailed concentration -- the objects more or less think for themselves and act on their own, fueled by his magic. Issu…

A system loosely based on Might&Magic 6-8; All spls get the x1/3 Real Cost multiplier. This is to encourage having a variety of spls. All spls take the Requires A [magictype] Skill Roll, but with no Active Point modifier, for a -0 to the roll. All spls are powered by an END Reserve, which is based solely on the Mastery of the caster. Mastery.....END.....REC per Hour.....Reserve Cost Novice.......24......3.......................3 Expert.......32......4.......................4 Master.......40......5.......................6 Grandmaster..48......6.......................7 The END Reserve recharges completely in a 8 hour period (such as a night's sleep)…

How would you build a Wand of Wonder? Basically, a pile of effects, with a random effect chosen at activation. The first step would be the list of powers, which I'd do as an EC, I think. But, then, how to determine the power at game-time? Laz

I noticed a lot of GM's having problems with players who don't play their characters realistically - especially when it comes to wearing armor. One way to deal with this is to reward players with extra experience/character points who play their characters realistically. If a player tells me that his warrior is not going to wear armor today because he begins to feel cramped and uncomfortable if he wears it for too long, I would reward that player for good roleplaying. Here's another, more mechanical solution: In game, it's easy to just tell the GM that you want your character to study and learn a spell for 10 hours straight, or wear heavy armor constantly. Realist…

I was wondering what those who have FHG 2 thought of it in general. Also, are the new spell groups (Dark Magic, Chaos Magic, etc.) just sub-categories of existing arcana (such as Wizardry and Thaumaturgy) or are they arcana themselves that require wizards learn an entirely new skill? I would certainly hope for the former, but I suppose that if I don't like it I can change it anyways
