to borrow a phrase from Dave Sering... Giant Tin Samurai Battlemech and other Giant Tin Samurai Quirks and Disadvantages: 1. Placement of the sensors in the protruding nose leave a blindspot aft, and make the sensors vulnerable to head and center torso criticals. 2. Problems with the unbalanced placement of the main weapon in the left arm have resulted in it being redesigned 3 times, and it still being vulnerable to arm criticals 3. The waist mounted anti-missile system has been fraught with problems, and the only thing to have solved the problem was to replace it entirely with a different model. 4. The protruding barrel of the main weapons system is su…

To anybody who plays Star Hero and uses the published materials can you give me a quick rundown of the setting. Is it like Star Wars or Star Trek or is it completley unlike anything we've seen before. I have decide that I want to try all the hero products that I haven't played before (Fantasy Hero/Star Hero) and would like some input.

In Maximum Tech, there is Advanced Ability in the Miscellaneous Rules section called Manoeuvring Ace. I am very new to the Hero system, which we are using for out of 'Mech role-play as well as character cost, and would like to know how this would translate to the Hero system cost-wise and what category it would be in. If the Question Man reads this, he of course has the final say and can choose to not allow it if he likes. If he doesn't read this, I'll wait until I have a suggested cost, and see what he says. Thank you in advance. Oh, and for anyone who's been keeping track of the Question Man's posts about our unit, we played our first true session on Wedn…

I'm in the process of running through the Terran Empire price lists, sorting out the retail and black market costs of various things. Quite a bit of the really useful stuff just has N/A under the Price column of the equipment tables, presumably because it's not stuff the characters can just go out and buy. No "Crazy Vaclav's Used Battle Armour Emporium" on the corner, and that's fair enough. However, it occurred to me that planetary militias, mercenary companies and corporate security are going to have to get their equipment somewhere, and so I thought I'd price some of the unpriced equipment -- stuff like light, medium and heavy battle armour, military (or paramilit…

If I get Hero, Star Hero, and Terran Empire will I have a complete ruleset and setting and be able to start right away? And will I only need to build new ships, aliens etc. as I come up with new ideas? I'm new to Hero. I know if I buy the Hero rulebook I need to use the rules to build ships, vehicles, aliens, planets etc. from scratch. If I understand Terran Empire (and more generically Star Hero), though, a lot of this work is done for me, providing balanced ships, weapons, maybe psionics (not sure if it is part of the setting), aliens etc. Am I correct in my thinking?

I know that the planet book and NPC book for Terran Empire have been pushed to the back of the line for new products. Steve, I was wondering if you've ever considered selling the two products electronically as PDFs? Even if you only offered one fourth of the original printed page count it would be better than the nothing currently planned. If they happened to sell well you could put out the rest of the pages later. If PDFs worked out, you could put out a little more variety of products, but with smaller page counts. Even one or two a year would help keep your existing customers who like a certain poorly selling genre and lure in new customers (like me!). A…

Are any adventures being run for Star Hero/Terran Empire at Gen Con this year? In another thread, Steve said Star Hero supplements aren't selling well, which seems like a shame since Terran Empire is great. I don't know the Hero system well enough myself to run a game at a con yet. Is anyone else running adventures at conventions to get the word out about Star Hero/Terran Empire?

Massive engineering projects? 1 2

I am creating a hard-science SF campaign (a somewhat more optimistic one than my last dismal failure), in the vein of KSR's Mars Trilogy. I am looking for really massive feats of engineering for the setting, stuff like the space elevators, the Gibraltar bridge, O'Neill colonies, mass drivers, all the Martian Terraformation stuff, etc., that are achievable with (mostly) hard science, a couple centuries from now. any suggestions?

I'm looking for a good sci-fi setting but don't need a lot of rules. Will the pieces and rule parts of Terran empire work with Sidekick, the lite Hero rules? Or will some of the new material not work without all the rules of 5th Edition? Thanks!

Now you can pilot a 75 ton Robot Warrior across laser-charred battlefields! The old classic is back in digital format and can be purchased for $9.95 in the Online Store! Also, we've reduced the prices on most of the pre-5th PDFs in the Online Store to $9.95... that's right, all of our old books in digital format are available for less than ten bucks!!! And act fast, because come June 1st, a few of those PDFs will be gone... FOREVER!!!

What is the best way to run a game in which the characters are space pirates, but not bloodthirty killing machines, but rather romantic rebels against a society within whose boundaries they cannot live? These characters might actually be the heroes of the setting -- the Empire upon whose shipping they prey is corrupt, decadent, and denies freedom to the everyman. The only freedom to be found is in space, and the only safety in the ability to flght and flee. Wise merchants carry insurance, because cargo is easier to replace than crews or ships -- and previously law-abiding starfarers may have to go rogue themselves if the bank tries to foreclose on their ship as the t…

I'm finally hammering down a homebrewed Star Hero universe (or a tiny galactic sliver thereof), and I'm needing some organizations. A few I've lifted from various sources (including using the Interstellar League for the over-government, even though it isn't a Terran Empire setting ... hope Steve forgives me). So, here's what I have so far ... Interstellar Leage (Interstel): The over-government, a basic rip-off of the United Federation of Planets. Delegates from the member worlds gather at Interstel HQ and do a United Nations thing, 'cept it actually works. Mostly. Brotherhood of the One True Mind: Essentially, a group of psi-supremacists. Lucifer's Hamm…

Almost finished Terran Empire. Love the setting. However, something in the starship section really annoys me: The plasma cannons are so short range as to be utterly useless. In ship-to-ship combat, there's no way two equally powerful ships will ever get close enough to use them, and against weaker ships they are pointless. As antifighter weapons, their one hex accurate AoE would be nice, but even MAME have about 4 times the range. As antimissile weapons, they *might* be able to get one shot off, maybe, but given an antimatter missile covers the entire range of the plasma cannon in less than a second, I doubt it.

has anybody tried putting together an Orion driven starship? for Star Hero? Project Orion being the bomb drive that used what amounted to focused nuclear explosions to provide thrust also, has anyone done rules for bombed pumped laser warheads for missiles?

I just came across a couple of interesting names, and I thought... what if a GM were to throw the players off an investigative track by giving an unseen boss a strange-sounding -- but definitely Human -- name? For instance, the PCs keep hearing the bad guys talk about a powerful figure named Vulko Trombulak, and assume he's an alien only to learn that he's quite Human (it's a Bulgarian name).

I bought Terran Empire and was amazed. I bought Alien Wars and, well, at least I liked it (though i like Terran Empire a lot more), and both are worth their money. But there is one detail I don't quite understand: The United Earth Ships in Alien Wars use chemical rockets for sublight propulsion. So we have a Centauri class battleship, 100 000 tons, that accelerates at 0.5 g, uses chemical rockets to do that, and has fuel for one month aboard. This computes down to... uhm. 250 million tons of reaction mass. Is that correct? I'd say that is a conceptional error- not a big one, easy to correct (if they were very high efficiency fusion rockets with a specific i…

Hello all, I'm looking to set a superheroic campaign in the 40K universe (squad of Space Marines) and I was curious if anyone had done any ground work or had any suggestions. Mainly I'm curious about Space Marine templates, weapons conversions and ideas about formatting or creating packages for a couple of alien races, probably Ork and Tyranid. Of course, I appreciate any help you might be able to give me. Thanks, Frank

I caught the last of BBC Radio 4's Lifespans programme last night, which concentrated on the latest scientific studies of increasing longevity. It could make interesting material for a more science-based Star Hero game. If you have Real Player, you can listen to the show by visiting http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/science/ , scrolling down the list of shows to Lifepans and clicking "Listen Again". I'll try to find the time to do a synopsis for those without Real Player this evening.

Hello, if you've been keeping up with the Question Man's posts, I am the one who was more interested in Role-Play than in fighting. I have never played Hero before, but am learning in a BattleTech environment. We are currently in the Character Creation phase. I have a History, Image, and Vehicle for my character, but I am still working on the actual Hero statistics. I have created an online sheet (http:// http://www3.telus.net/a6b33539/DMI%20Profile%20CC62-RG2445U.html), which is still very much a work in progress. I would appreciate it if some of you could go over it and give me some feedback. If you have any questions over what I had intended with the character, use the…

I still realtively new to the Hero system and I'm trying to define a very central piece of gear for an old campaign setting that I'm porting to Hero and I'm looking for some input on how to do it. I need to design a vehicle (humanoid mecha) that is as independant as a follower (it's alive) but is able to amplify the pilot character's power pools and act as an endurance battery while the character is inside it. The vehicle part seems easy, even the independence issue can be solved by giving the vehicle an INT and EGO characteristic. But I'm unsure about how I should cost the power pool boost and the endurance battery as they seem to fit better as a focus. I've thought…
