Ternaugh
Quote A strange track (partly dreamt) influenced by the book 'The Diary Of Anne Frank'...I remembered being told that children made the best spies in World War Two...What if a child had been responsible for her family's discovery? The song follows an imaginary character's development from child, to spy and to monster - a story of opportunism at its worse...Steve Hackett

Michael Hopcroft
I don't know exactly what "Up the junction" means in working-class English slang, but danged if it isn't an appropriate thing to say at the end of this sad story. I suggest listening to the entire song before reading the paragraph below the video. Think about it. The singer had gone as close as he could to an idyllic, fulfilling life even without a lot of money -- but he'd become an alcoholic and declined so rapidly that his wife/girlfriend takes his daughter and leaves. At the time of the song, he has hit rock bottom. He has come to a junction -- a point at which he must choose his life's direction from this point because not choosing is no longer an option. Will he take on the hard task of redeeming himself, knowing it still won't be enough to win back his wife/girlfriend and child? Or will he slip into a pointless life of addiction and a premature death?

Ternaugh
Finding the YouTube video for "Forever Autumn" led me down a little bit of a rabbit-hole from reading the comments. It seems that the melody was originally for a 1969 Lego commercial jingle, written by Jeff Wayne and performed by Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. Osborne and Vigrass later released a version on their 1972 album, Queues, to which they added the lyrics. When Jeff Wayne was making WotW, he wanted a love song like "Forever Autumn", but sung by that "Nights in White Satin" guy.
