Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

For me it is more of a classic comic trope - in a sense no reality...

Supertech doesn't effect the world.

No angst from never killing a serial killer (even though it means he may escape and do it again)

No intense motivations for bad guys - they are bad because they are the bad guys.

Don't see that in game much anymore - to tell the truth you don't see it much in comics anymore and that saddens me.

Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

I have one:

I like a couple anime shows I'd like to vaguely borrow from but in general, anime is hated by my group (and quite a few regulars on these forums :D ). Sooo, I sneak it in.

Or how about:

I like to create complex NPC's that the other GM's don't use much. Think about it: a player creates something - a NPC or DNPC - that fits the character within the campaign, to add to the campaign, and the GM rarely uses it. Go fig.

or yet:

You create a detailed background/origin for your character & run it past the GM, allowing for plots and episodes where your character will be at a disadvantage. It's accepted by the GM. Afterwards, it's not used and you have to remind the GM to use it.

Still, even with these, my group is a wonderful group.

I had a character captured recently and it was a fun game, so it's not a big deal for everyone. It made for an interesting situation and some fun RP.

I sometimes run into the 'don't like anime' thing with my group. I also found that some of the most memorable stuff in the game was stuff I took from anime and didn't tell anyone.:)

Umm Damocles Directive is going to be calling for players around :check calendar: Halloween.

Wanna play?

Hawksmoor

Yeppers. I'll have to come up with something a bit different for my next submission, though, since the last one didn't make the cut :)

Pretty sure I know why, though. Like most of my characters the concept starts out clear then gets muddied as I try to get them finished. Too many concepts spoil the plot.

Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

Well in the group I play they don't like Androids, or to some extent Aliens. Even when we have a PC that routinely builds automations for everything from security to house cleaning. Plus the champain world has a group currently lost in a distant part of the galaxey.

I just happen to have made a Android and I play an Alien. I get no respect from the other PC's. I even had my Android mystically made into a 'real' person. I didn't mind bc it allowed me to alter the Android C a bit. My Alien has these nice contacts all over the region the PC's are trapped in and I have to go and do all the 'leg' work myself and then 'fight' to get the team leader to take what I find and us it.

In that same game, another PC is an alien he just looks, and is almost totally, human. He's a drunk, lieing, cheating, creap and he get's all of the PC's respect. He is asked to do all the info gathering and he has to end up asking my C to help.

NOW THAT IS WHAT I DON'T LIKE.

Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

I've always liked the "dimensional exiles" game where the PCs are regular people cast into an alternate universe. Fantasy touches on this lightly but generally dismisses the idea without much thought. I wouldn't mind much if my superteam got involved in a multi-session arc carrying them across several random dimensions before getting home.

With the earlier comment about the VPP, it all depends on how you use it. A multipower with 10 ultra slots has the same cost as a cosmic VPP with the 1/2 limitation "only of a certain special effect". So someone who has (for example) fire powers could have a multipower of a straight EB, 1/2 END, 0 END, Explosion, AE Radius, and the RKA counter parts all to reflect his mastery of his gift. Buy converting the Multipower into the VPP you give him some extra mastery to justify having EB with Autofire or Penetrating or AE Cone without spending the extra points. He wouldn't be able to use it for Teleport, Stretching or the "exactly what we need" power because of the limitation. I like to use the "5 second" rule. If you have a Cosmic VPP you have 5 seconds to determine how you're allocating the points. It keeps me from abusing it and fits in well with my character. He has a collection of parts which can be rearranged to produce different powers. Right now all he has are plasma generators so I'm rather limited. As the character gets more parts, he gets more possibilities.

Well' date=' the traditional form for alot of the weaknesses is "total powerlessness," which is not especially fun to RP. It also violates some of the metagame rules of thumb, like "try not to have flaws that are totally crippling."[/quote']

I play a character named Whiteraven who is a 600+ point Egoist. Her major disadvantege is that she is mute. Her vocal cords have been mangeled and she cannot form words telepathically. I have to play in character with my mouth shut. She has the skill sign language but none of the other players have spent experience points to pick it up so plan B is to write out what I say under the pretext of useing a text messenger. Telepathically, she uses images of things that she remembers sub-consciously and sends them in a form of a psionic rebus puzzel and hope the players understand it. Suffice it to say, I've gone through quite a few memo pads playing this character but wouldn't have it any other way.

It's a shame none of your character's fellow heroes have bothered to learn sign language to better communicate with Whiteraven. Were a similar situation to develop in our campaign I'm certain at least one (and probably several) of our team members would have learned sign language. (I suppose it's remotely possible your fellow players think difficulty communicating is what you want.)

Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

I totally agree. Even sans powers' date=' almost any super should have some chance of taking down a common thug or low-level agent. In my experience being utterly helpless out of hero ID, unless it's a central part of the character's concept, is generally a sign of overly munchkinized character design.[/quote']

Can be fun, though - I played a character who was a very fast brick, with Public ID. In hero ID he was stronger, faster, and (importantly) much better looking than his normal form. Since the two forms didn't share memories, the normal form hated the Hero ID form (who got dates with Movie stars, endorsement contracts, etc, while he didn't) and the Hero ID thought the normal form was a schmuck (who had to be kept out of the public eye as much as possible).

Of course the character had accidental change :D

Cheers, Mark

Taking stuff from the players. They seem to really hate it when their equipment or weapons are taken from them and they have to scrounge for something useful or just use their own skill and ability. One player I have seriously overreacted when she was robbed of some stuff she was carrying in her bag of holding. She ended up burning down a forest so as to piss off some druids so that they would end up killing her.

I am now running a Conan game and I plan on having the characters shanghied on a pirate ship. They will essentially pass out in a tavern and wake up chained to an oar. However because they so cherish their weapons and equipment and tend to think they are helpless without it they will more than likely protest it so much it will kill the fun of the game.

Damn, players have become a whiny lot nowadays.

A bit mean, but...

First whine: "The captain hears your moans, reaches into a hitherto unseen container, pulls out [whiny character's minor belonging], and hurls it overboard. He says "I don't tolerate back talk from my oarsmen".

Message: Your stull is all here and recoverable, but any whining about it being unavailable will result in it being lost forever. Ball's in your court!

This is why my favorite class in D&D is the psion lately. Take my stuff, go ahead. Holy symbol? Don't care. Spellbook? Don't got one. Spell component pouch? Ain't got one of those either. So long as you don't take my brain, I've got power, and if you *do* take my brain, I've got bigger problems than being chained to an oar.

Agreed!

I recall playing in one group that every so often I would look at the GM (usually when things were going just so smoothly) and say "Uhm, you know I've got 3d6 Unluck, right?"

Maybe it sounds goofy, but the disads are part of the character-- use them. And the history is part of the shared universe. Ignoring it seems to really reduce its 'legitimacy.'

Yeah, I can understand that (even if sometimes as GM I have to doublecheck or I forget as well).

If the disads you pick contribute to the campaign in someway, they can be a source of pride.

How should I put this...

In D&D, items are usually about as interesting as the PC's who carry them.

This is not a bad thing!

The look and the weapon make the fighter badass and cool to visualize. Any kind of core item is more part of the character than 'stuff' they have.

In Hero terms, I'd say you should take most items as Foci _without_ Independent.

Don't dramatically change what a PC is without talking to the player first. That "random" item might have a small novella of a backstory in their head.

That 'bare minimum whining' might be because they envision their characters as being better than their stats say, plain and simple.

A lot of DM's are _cruel_ with items, not giving the right amount (in D&D), which means players end up underpowered time and again. If you remind them of lousy games (we finally got enough stuff to be effective, and he had a magical thief rob us blind) you should not be surprised they expect this to go wrong.

Frankly, 'they get drunk and wake up shanghaid' sounds _dmn_ railroady. There are more than one way to get them on the pirate ship, and if they end up being responsible for their own fate, they might be a little happier (especially if they can see where their stuff is of then).

Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

It's hard to say. I often find the level of obsession with items on the part of D&D players to be kind of frustrating. The two D&D conventions games I run take away the PC's stuff because I found out the hard way that you can lose two out of the four hours to munchkin players trying to renegotiate their equipment list.

Of course, for a campaign, just enforcing the encumbrance rules and not handing out balance-destroying artifacts in the first place can work quite well.

In a convention, _surely_ you'd use pregenerated characters?

In a campaign...

3.5 is designed so that the PC's are expected to have their toys. Campaign balance jumps out the window and runs for the hills otherwise.

Re: What in genre bit do you like that no one else seems to enjoy ?

Sadly, one of my favorite things that rarely happens for me is a player is living at the 'public' base. The other players get positively paranoid (albeit with understandible reason) and IF they build a base at all, it becomes ultra hidden and secret even if the team in question is more Avengers than X-Men or more Watch Tower than Batcave. I guess realistically, it would just end up ticking with a bomb in it every other weekend, or spies galore, and the GMs feel obligated to do it. Lot of fun for them, but most other players i know wince and simply swear off public bases ever.

And that's if they don't have to pay POINTS for it.
