archermoo
Re: A Thread for Random Musings I guess it is just too much to ask for people to keep replies out of this thread. Don't know why it annoys me as much as it does, but it does. Probably at least a little to do with the lack of common courtesy it shows. Since there isn't any reason to follow thread rules maybe I should start posting my random thoughts in some of the game threads instead of here... Cancer
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Our tentative plans to take Friday off and go on a trip out to the Olympic Peninsula seem likely to be torpedoed. Both kids seem to be coming down with a virus. In our household, that usually means my wife gets it two or three days after they do, and I chime in two or three days after that. So I may be feeling wretched starting Saturday, assuming that timeline.
OddHat
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Just read an article about steroid use in prisons. It reminded me of an NPR piece on a book written by an ex-prison guard. In the book, he mentions pot use in prisons. We can't keep recreational drug use out of prisons, yet America and good chunks of the world maintain the "War on Drugs." As a group, we are strange. Solomon
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Today is the Ides of March! 2050 years ago, Julius Caesar was assassinated... Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Cæsar, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them, The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Cæsar. The noble Brutus Hath told you Cæsar was ambitious; If it were so, it was a grievous fault, And grievously hath Cæsar answer’d it. Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest,- For Brutus is an honourable man; So are they all, all honourable men,- Come I to speak in Cæsar’s funeral. He was my friend, faithful and just to me: But Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. He hath brought many captives home to Rome, Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill: Did this in Cæsar seem ambitious? When that the poor have cried, Cæsar hath wept; Ambition should be made of sterner stuff: Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And Brutus is an honourable man. You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition? Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And, sure, he is an honourable man. I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, But here I am to speak what I do know. You all did love him once, not without cause: What cause withholds you then to mourn for him? O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Cæsar, And I must pause till it come back to me. death tribble
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Apparantly I must be protected. On the Atomic Think Tank a guy posts that Infinity Crisis is brilliant and Marvel is rubbish and also that Identity Crisis was good. I say no to the latter and point out what I find as problems to it including what I say is the motiveless murder of Sue. So the guy replies that I am wrong due to sales figures and that the murder is not motiveless. He then says that I must take my head out of my inserted smilie with devils horns. The moderators took offence to the latter and shut the thread giving the guy a caution. I've been called worse and wound up more but I see the point in why they did it. It was not my intention to get him in trouble but some people can't seem to tolerate another's viewpoint.
Enforcer84
Re: A Thread for Random Musings My great uncle was a mason. I saw my first masonic funeral today. They wear approns. I laughed and wondered what they'd think of gamers dressed in chainmail. it was nice to get together with family. I miss them. I stayed with my aunt and uncle last night and its just nice being with them. Saw my parents and brother who came from Washington. The service was in St Helens, where my grandparents and uncle grew up. It was odd. as they were going through his stuff they found that he had been awarded the Bronze Star when he was in the philipines in WWII. He also met his wife there. She was from Sweden and a member of the Red Cross, but had black hair and dark eyes. This apparently led my great grandmother to believe she was a philipino woman, no one ever corrected my great grandmother. There were some other neat little stories. I have two families due to my birth. My father's family are negative and clannish, my mother's family is positive and embracing (By comparison) and I've now been to two funerals for each side of the family. It shows. Anyway, if you wondered where I was last night, now you know!

death tribble
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Last night saw a documentary on September 11th 2001 focusing on those that jumped and one of the iconic photographs that was not shown afterwards. I missed most of this on the day itself. Part of the programme was devoted to trying to identify the man in the picture. They knew it was porobably a guy in the restaurant and his general size. They eventually came up with a name after a previous article had identified it as a pastry cook. This was in error. The thing that disturbed me most was the family of the pastry cook believed that if someone committed suicide then they would go to Hell. Now as a Catholic I cannot accept that. It is just wrong to my way of thinking that if you choose to escape burning to death by leaping out of the building that you automatically consign yourself to damnation. Sorry if this is a rant but it rankles.
Boulder
Re: A Thread for Random Musings I agree with the Trible, When the guy jumped he was hoping, yes hoping that he would not die. Sucide is a person who "wants" to die, now if he was say burning in pain and just wanted to end it, than that is one ticket to hell. But what do I know? I have rocks for brains! AliceTheOwl
Re: A Thread for Random Musings Last night, I was up later than Josh. When I went to bed, the cat was all over the place, meowing at me at the top of his voice. With one particular exclamation of "Meow! Meow!", I saw Josh start to stir, so I indicated for the cat to be quiet. The cat stared at me a second, then said, "Meow?" I had to go out to the living room to crack up.
