A Thread for Random Musings

They're driving me nuts here! Why did you ask for my ideas and shoot everything down? First of all, it's unreasonable to demand a window view when NONE OF YOU ARE NEXT TO A WINDOW! Arranging this so everyone can see through someone else's space to a window fifty feet away is not just inefficient, it's stupid. And selfish. Why am I the only one that gets that? Why am I the only one not making demands like that? I think I'm going to cry.

I take exception to the characterization of the game of chess on page 12. Chess is useful for teaching aggression (if you are on the defensive in chess, you are losing) the importance of planning and logically forecasting (a chess player learns to think several moves ahead) and flexibility (the board changes with every move and the player must constantly adapt to the opponent's actions) and all of these habits of thought are valuable to a successful capitalist. While I doubt chess or any other game is likely to have any impact on sexual orientation, I note that the most clearly gendered pieces are the queen and king, one being the most powerful piece and the other being the one indispensable piece, and both being necessary to a full set; one could draw an implicit lesson in the interdependence of male and female and the necessity of mutual respect and cooperation. If anything chess is heteronormative. It is certainly not anticapitalistic.

The palindromedary explains that a local newspaper was implying a connection between playing chess and a "radical homosexual agenda." The article was plainly labeled as satire but perhaps Lucius missed that....

June 15th - Waterloo!

Busy throwing screwed up post-it notes at the only Frenchman in the office. He knows better than to retaliate, but I can sense the simmering rage...

The Kazakhs don't understand it which, as I'm still sitting on the banks of the Caspian Sea, surrounded by other Brits, is leading to some odd conversations.
