Oh, but it gets worse.

NFL cracking down after Cowboys, Eagles, other teams caught violating this obscure rule

The obscure rule is Rule 11-4-5, which states that "No article of any type may be placed on the field, or used in any manner, to assist a player in the execution of a field goal and/or [extra point] attempt."

So the Cowboys' holder has been picking up a white piece of grass and dropping it on the turf when he sets up, so that he can place the ball just where the kicker likes it. That's apparently illegal, and the Cowboys were told to stop doing it during last week's playoff game.

It seems the Chiefs, Lions, and Commanders are also implicated in this shocking abuse of the rules of the game.

I wonder how much the fines are going to be....?

And the vorpal axe is busy again today.

--Vikes fire DC Ed Donatelli.  When your defense is 28th in scoring, this isn't a major surprise, altho I think to a point that might be scapegoating.

--Bucs fire OC Byron Leftwich, along with several others departing.  This isn't surprising;  Leftwich had success in the past, but for whatever reasons this year, the offense was horrible...except in the hurry-up when Brady was running his own show.  I'll also take this as a sign of advance appeasement for Brady.

Leftwich's coaching future has to be questioned.  He started with Bruce Arians in Arizona, and moved with him to Florida.  They won the SB together...but since Arians' departure, the results have fallen off drastically.

Good times, but not best of times.

The Cowboys got into the playoffs, and won a game.

Lines for tomorrow:  KC -9, Eagles -7.5.  The Athletic's newsletter writer personally expected it to be KC by 17., and doesn't give the Giants much chance either.  Exposing the Vikes wasn't exactly filling him with confidence.

For Sunday, Bills -5.5...the common theme has been the Bengals' offensive line injuries.  Niners -4 over the Cowboys.  Hope so;  is there anything more confounding than Mr. Irrelevant making the conference title game, in his rookie year, after starting 3rd on the depth chart?  Obviously, going all the way, but to the point he's reached, it's the most.  Even Brady had a year on the bench before replacing Bledsoe, and basically started the entire season.  This'll be Purdy's, what, 7th game?  You go, boy!  Stick it to all those draft 'experts.'

So what does Brock Purdy's success say about Trey Lance's lack of success?

Granted Lance didn't have McCaffrey but....

Nothing really. Garoppolo was the starter last year because they knew Lance wasn't ready to go. (See Mahomes, Patrick for why this isn't a damning indictment.) This year Lance was hurt in the first half of the first game of the season. If they're satisfied with Purdy (and I think they've lucked into Tom Brady 2.0) then they can trade Lance and if not, he can compete for the starter's spot next year.

That is nuts. Reminds me of a game some years ago where the winning team had zero yards on offense.

(Don't recall either team, wanna say Pittsburgh and a Texas team.)

Probably this:

Steelers almost double time of possession, well over double the # of plays.  Texans gain 47 total yards...but get 3 return TDs from the defense.  40 yard fumble return, pair of long INT returns.
