Swan is a martial artist who can turn insubstantial and boost her jumping and kicking power.

 

Yes, he's a focus-based mentalist.

 

He's sort of all over the place. His strength, agility, hand-to-hand combat ability are all quite high, and he uses silly big guns (custom-made).

Sounds like you have Martial Arts, Mental Powers, and Ranged Attacks covered. IMHO I think this group would benefit from a Gadgeteer (aka a Brain) a Brick (or both). As you already have a few focus users (helmet and guns) I don't think you need a gadgeteer. I might go for a smart Brick type (Hulk, Giant Man, Sasquatch, ect.)

 

I applaud that you are bypassing the sterotypes (like a Bear metatmorph, a Hammer and Sickle weaponmaster, or a Winter mystic) and going for original Russian heroes.

Apologies for my "I once had a character" tangent...

 

I love Growth and have tried to use it many times in games and mostly ended up frustrated. I either couldn't use all of my Growth because we were indoors (which kept my str below maximum of course), or I would become too heavy and crash through the floor. Unfortunately if Growth is your main source of Str, you won't be able to hit your maximum height as often as Giant-Man or Giganta do in the comics.

 

My frustration led me to create a Character who Linked Desolidification to his Growth, so he could pass through solid objects and not destroy surfaces he stood on. To make the character playable, I had to buy the Desolidification with "Does Not Protect against Damage". The GM also made me buy my Str "Affects Physical World" but did not penalize me for being above our game's AP cap. The character's name was Cloud (alternately Cloud Giant). Because the character could Fly fairly quickly (he was a giant humanoid cloud after all), you might almost be able to call him a Growth based Speedster. :thumbup:

I have three characters, Russians from 1939.

 

I have a ballerina with the power to control her own mass, a guy with a "psychotronic helmet" that amplifies his own relatively modest mentalist abilities, and a half-human half ape hybrid. I"m trying to figure out who their fourth member should be.

"Baba Yaga" means "witch" in Russian (and as has been mentioned, there is folklore about her).

 

Maybe Siberian (or Cyberian) who is a cyborg

 

A super soldier who knows sambo, just goes by the name "Tovarish" (toe var eesh or toe va reesh [it's been about 10 years since I took Russian]), which means "comrade."

 

I think Stalin actually means "man of steel" or "steel man" and could be your brick.

 

"Metro" (just like in English, but roll your r) could be a duplicator!

I tend to have trouble reconciling the whole individualistic uniform, code name, etc. with the whole Soviet mindset. A soviet outlaw, I have no problem with them doing the "super identity" thing, and I could see that including anti-socialist vigilantes.

I don't have as big an issue with it. For some, works pretty well.

 

"Comrade X, Party Avenger!" is a symbol. Booyah for symbols! As a symbol, he's larger than life. Have a problem with him? Retire/shoot him, stick someone else in the costume. Rinse (perhaps literally), repeat.

Then again I have trouble reconciling the whole "Never cashing in" ethic of most American superheroes with the whole American mindset. That being said, their "uniforms" are only as individualistic as practicality demands (the ballerina has to wear a leotard. She can't do her moves in ordinary clothing. The psychotronic man has to wear a funny-looking helmet to use his powers. The ape-man needs to wear a gigantic great-coat to accomodate his strange proportions and ludicrously large gun.). They don't have pseudonyms yet but I expect their opponents will give them nicks. At the same time, however, have you ever read Enemy At the Gates? The Russians can't afford to have the Americans and the Germans both trotting out their respective superhuman champions without having their own.

Pshaw! Have you not read up on Cavalier and Binary Man? :D And my PC, Juggernaut, is a city employee with a public ID, so she's being paid to be a superhero.

 

Though, she's not being paid enough for even 1 point of wealth.

The poor Red Beast, removed by being shipped off to America, told to pretend his spy op was actually an 'alien invasion', and then clobbered by a family on a picnic. The KGB could at least have given him a dignified end in the cellars of the Lubyanka.

 

Hey, that idea makes more sense than the movie...

I don't have a powerset in mind, but I do have a cool back-story / explanation for a Russian character. Back in the 40's, when the Iron Curtain wasn't all rusty and falling apart, the soviets did their own super solder program, coming up with the character in question. Very jingoistic, very hard line communist. The head of the program put this freshly minted solder on ice in cryogenic suspension until the time was right to deploy him in defense of Mother Russia.

 

And there he stayed, until the USSR fell apart. As the perestroika and glasnost policies took off, the remnants of the old way were swept aside and forgotten. As the Soviet Union fell apart, and the military didn't have enough money to pay their troops, they started selling off old war surplus - included in the lots were cryogenic suspension equipment - including one never used super solder.

 

So now we have a red commie to the core hardliner with no purpose and ton of culture shock, trying to make his way in a capitalist world.

Ok, after digging around on my hard drive, I found some brainstorming notes from a couple of months back. I never did get around to writing these guys up, but it's a starting point.

 

RUSSIAN

Iron Curtain - metal coverd man Tank

Red Menace - big robot!

Molotov - fire blaster

Ursa Major - Intelligent bear tank

Tunguska Blast - Radiation blaster

Tesla - Electrical control/suppression

Pravda - Mentalist

Bolshoi - martial artist dexterity based guy

How about a farmer?

 

I had a whole Corp of Soviet Super Soldiers (I found the acronym funny at the time) one of whom was a farmer. It's a concept that doesn't roll around much and tends to be under powered at that. Area affect growth only usable on plant life. His back story lay from keeping one small part of the Northern Ukraine fertile during forced collectivisation.

 

With a little imagination it's an amazingly powerful character type. Usual grab and hold, various tunneling and wall breaking effects. Always has a club or spear available, even got a decent RKA area effect by growing spores that people had breathed in, or seeds that they'd eaten but had not been digested. Nothing worse that having a tree/ vine/ bush erupting from your bowels to ruin your day as well as that of the paramedics rescuing you. Try that.

Off-hand, it sounds like a limitation given for a power that's not limited if digested food is a new weapon (not to mention always carrying something wooden).

 

If it's just an SFX bought with advantages (such as indirect) then that could be less-cheesy. It just rings of Magneto's metal limitation not being limited and Aquaman's "fish only" powers used to give a guy a heart-attack by "controlling the ancient fish DNA" inside someone. But that feeling may be just because I've seen people take "requires [x]" and always packing [x] with them where ever they go, including a PC who had plant-only powers.

 

Aside from that, it sounds like a fresh/rarely used concept.

Captain Communism, a Captain America-style hero with a red costume with a yellow hammer'n'sickle motif upon his adamantium shield.

 

Or Hammer and Sickle the super duo. HAmmer being the brick and Sickle being the near-psychopathic martial artist.

How about a mystic whose powers are tied to Mother Russia. Most of his abilities would be based on controlling the environment, after all no army has successfully invaded Russia. He could be why.

Not true, of course. Germany successfully invaded Russia in WW1, forcing the Russians to sue for peace.

 

This was probably the immediate example influencing the WW2 invasion. After all, it was only 20-25 years before.

 

And the Mongols took and held Russia for quite some time. :)
