Reorganized the Magic System documents on my High Fantasy HERO site. Seperated the Magic System guidelines portions of the docs and the Package deals for greater clarity. Did a significant reorg of the various "Vancian" Magic Systems to make their relationship to each other more clear. Pulled the Sorcery option called Stregari mentioned as a Variant in the original version into its own document. Check it out.... http://www.killershrike.com/FantasyHERO/HighFantasyHERO/FantasyHERO.shtml

I was glancing over the descriptions of these two books, and I was wondering what those of you who had (or have read) both of them thought? What are the differences between the two? Recommendations?

Just how good is the book for a Turakian campaign? And what does it cover? Just generic monsters, or does it also show what more dangerous individuals would be like? And just how does it do with the universe-specific and original critters, as compared to the old reliables? I know Steve's work is always great, but I'm just testing the waters here before I commit to anything.

I have Valdorian Age and obviously not the Turakian Age. The Valdorian Age says pretty much, the gods left because Valdor was killed. Who where the gods anyway? If your going to be running a campaign, it would kind of be nice to know who had been around and had been worshipped so that you can design old temples and ancient religious relics for the signs of the old gods. So if someone could share this with me, I would appreciate it.

I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with. I have Valdorian Age and I have been informed that the gods are all listed in the Turakian Age Sourcebook. Well, I need some help because I won't be able to get Turakian Age for a little while. Is there a god that fits the domain of Ice? If not specifically for Ice, is there a god that covers the domain of Water?

Heya! I have just been thinking of how to design a adventurer-classic: the open door spell. My fist thought goes in the direction of transform. cosmetic transform (locked door into unlocked door) or do you think that this is already a minor transform? How do you do this classic spell

In all the time I've played Fantasy Hero as a PC or GM, I've never used an entangle, nor did the other GMs... Now I'm running a Campaign, where one of the players has bought an entangle as a spell. In this campaign almost all the opponents are Humans, with a STR 20 being the absolute maximum, ( Over that they become 'Non Human' - transgenic / semi mystical creatures ) Most 'Warriors' have a STR between 12 and 15 Most Normals have STR 8 - 10 I Just assumed no-one would use an Entangle that only affected one target, so when I designed example entangles for the NPC's ( Like 'Spider Web' Spells ) it seemed alright, - "Ah yeh that'll trap them but then they can…

I was wondering how people running Turakian Age campaigns are dealing with areas of the map not covered by obvious historical parallels (particularly when designing package deals for characters from those areas). Obvious Parallels: Westerlands/North-western Mitharia: Western/Central Mediaeval Europe Western Mhorecia/North-central Mitharia: Central Mediaeval Europe Khirkovy: Russia (pre- or post-Mongol? - depends on number/type of infantry used) Indushara: Dark Ages/Mediaeval India Thon-sa: 'Stereotype' Tibet Gorthunda: 'Stereotype' Nomad (Hunnic is nearest, I think, though the yahgahn looks like a clone of the Turco-Mongol yataghan) Baghlan Plateau: …

Re: Anybody playing Valdorian Age? Off topic to Valdorian Age: Pulp fiction was used to promote nationalistic agenda against the 'percieved threats' of the day - Chinese, Communists, Nazis, and Black middle class empowerment. Much of the genre also works to justify the exploitation of indigenous people in the Amazon, Africa, and Oceana by depicting them as violent savages. Racism is openly declared in such works as Tarzan and King Kong, along with villains who are built to engineer racial stereotypes such as Fu Manchu or depections of Japanese and 'jungle blacks / jungle amazonians'. The genre was often an openly used tool of political and social pro…

To introduce myself, I'm just getting back into Hero after a number of years away, and am going to be running a Harn campaign. One thing I have never liked is how most games handle shields. A shield should not only provide improved DCV, but it does also get directly in the way and provide additional defense to the user. I've divided shields into three categories (in additional to the standard size classes); wooden, metal rimmed, and metal. A wooden shield has a DEF of 1, a metal rimmed one a DEF of 2, and a metal shield has a DEF of 3. In order to deal with the fact a shield cannot always be interposed I also add activation rolls based on the size of the shield.…

. . . I feel that I have asked a lot of questions lately . . . And here's another one: In your opinion, how many individuals in a city of, say, fifteen to thirty thousand has the Perks Wealthy and Filty Rich? Assume a S&S campaign that tries to be a bit on the realistic side, a coastal city with good trade connections, and late bronze age or early iron age technology.

This one is based on an item that one of the characters in my Harn campaign acquired (yes, this is the same character in the 'Quotes' thread - "You keep suggesting that I take weapons skills. That makes me nervous."). They keep getting into combat situations, and the character (a sage, of sorts) was given this by his mentor: Medallion of Swordsmanship: Weapon Familiarity (Common Melee Weapons) (2); 3 - 5 minute Continuing Charges (-1/4), OIF (Medallion) (-1/2); (1) plus +2 HTH Combat Skill Levels (10); 3 - 5 minute Continuing Charges (-1/4), OIF (Medallion) (-1/2), Levels Do Not Stack With Existing Levels (-1/4); (5); Totals (6) [3 CC] Description: Despit…

Thoughts on this conversion: s50.00 War Chain: (Total: 47 Active Cost, 16 Real Cost) Killing Attack - Hand-To-Hand 1 1/2d6 (+1 DC / +6.25 STR > Str Min.), (0 END; +1/2); OAF (-1), STR Minimum 13 (-1/2), -1 OCV, (-1/2), Two-Handed (-1/2), Real Weapon (-1/4) (Real Cost: 10) plus Stretching 1", (0 END; +1/2); OAF (-1), No Noncombat Stretching (-1/4), No Velocity Damage (-1/4) (Real Cost: 3) plus Penalty Skill Levels: +2 vs. when short or medium weapon gets 'inside' with a single attack (Real Cost: 3) [Notes: Body 4 Def 4_Flail Mnvr Long Reach] 4.00kg I'm thinking stretch to 1" to get the reach, and the Penalty Skill Levels so it can be just as good as…

I'm a big fan of interesting and unusual spells from D&D. I used to love the old Pages from the Mages columns in Dragon magazine in the 80s, and when it was resurrected in the 90s as the Arcane Lore column (featuring authors other than Ed Greenwood), I was ecstatic and bought every issue. I've converted many of those articles into Hero System terms, tweaking the spells so that they fit in well with the stuff in the Fantasy Hero Grimoires. Of course, I can't post them here, since they're copyrighted material. On the other hand, there're some similar articles on the Wizards of the Coast website, namely the Magic Books of Faerun archive. Since the articles are…

I am proud to announce the first ever Hero System community developed campaign setting. The Easthaven Campaign is a High Fantasy game setting where heroes start weak and must work their way up to become powerful heroes. The Ivory Tower system that allows for multi-user development is a project Aldaric Gaming has been designing for more than two months now. Based, loosely on the concept behind Wikipedia. You need only register an account and you can immediately begin editting the selections available. Because the Ivory Tower system is far from finished, new submissions are currently restricted. If you would like to be able to create new items all you need to do i…

Just Checking That I am doing something right. So how do you 'legally' build these simple spells, ( My mind has gone blank INT 8- Activation ) Flaming Weapon: The Caster Holds a Metal Weapon In His Hand, He Gestures and Incants his spell, thus Invoking The ManaFlow, and Burning Up a Lot Of his Mana ( END Reserve for Spells ). He checks His Skill If Successful, The Weapon gains an aura of Mystical Flame. This lasts as long as the Caster Desires, Or Until he turns it off, Or Is Stunned, Or Disarmed. When He Fights, He does his Normal Weapon Damage when He Hits ( This can of course vary from weapon to weapon ). If and Only If He Hits, The 'Flame' also Adds K…

I've been designing a couple of larger creatures for my setting, and they seem fine except when it comes to their DCV rating. This is because of the Negatives to DCV when creatures are larger. In the Fantasy Hero Bestiary, They have a Chimera ( 291 pts), which is merely "large" ie -2DCV. Its writeup seems fine, until I remember that LIm. Which changes its Base 5 DCV to 3 Ok so now the Average NPC townsman will hit it no problem ( Of course he will get killed first ) But vs Startting 75/75 PCs this thing will tend to be minced, as at worst to Hit any desired spot will be DCV 11 OK. So I am designing this beast, roughly analogous to a War Elephant. …

I want an Entangle spell: If I make a spell like : Plant Entangle: 2D6 Entangle AoE Radius 4" Continuous Charges - Continuing Charges lasting 5 Minutes Only works in areas with Vegetation Blah etc Where the effect is 'Plants magically clutch at your legs' Does that mean that for the 5 Minutes of the 'charge', anyone entering one of the covered Hexes, gets grabbed, and must break the Entangle before moving on, only to be grabbed again in the next Hex ? If it does, then I can use 'quite small' entangles as unless You can Casual STR through them, you're going to get stuck for at least one action in each hex. This then enables a minor wizar…

I've begun adding various random "thing" generation tables to my site at http://mojobob.com/roleplay/hero/fantasy/highfantasyhero/index.html - see the "Miscellaneous Resources" link in the navigation column on the left. At the moment I have tables for merchants' stock in trade, random tradesmen types, and a bunch of random name tables for my campaign world, based on various historical cultural groups, with more to come as I complete them. I'm not generally in favour of random generation for important stuff (except when I want things to be hopelessly illogical), but for the minutiae it can be a boon.

In just about every fantasy game I've seen (and FH being no exception) there has always been the option for purchasing some herbs and plants along with your swords, shields, backpacks and flint-n-steel. Now, if you really do your homework you can see that most of them listed (belladonna, garlic, holly, mistletoe and wolvesbane) have some mystical and/or warding properties to help the road-bound adventurer avoid supernatural troubles. But what about the medicinal properties? Has anyone considered using these herbs and plants (in a very loose manner) to do the following (all listed in FH p147): Belladonna: AKA Deadly Nightshade, Tobacco; Belladonna Oral is used to …

Hi -- I have a player who wants his character to be able to use poison darts. Interestingly, the Fantasy Hero book does include a suggestion of the monetary cost for 3 different strengths of poisons. However, it doesn't make any suggestions at what the point cost or number of doses those monetary costs would actually relate with. (Obviously, there are other issues with poison ... like tracking down how to buy it and not get into a huge amount of trouble, and such. ) I noticed on Killer Shrike's wonderful website, http://www.killershrike.com/FantasyHERO/HighFantasyHERO/shrikeMagicItems.shtml, a suggestion for potions being the real cost * the active cost,…

If you have a campaign world where magic is common (High Fantasy) but the game point level is low (25+50: Low Fantasy) and Magic is an Expensive System to be able to use. I'm using the True Gift system so the typical spell category is going to cost a person 13 points for full mastery and their are six spell categories in total. Would this be considered High Fantasy or Low Fantasy?

Got a few questions regarding the specific Turakian weapons mentioned in TTA - couldn't find some referenced in the book or on the boards. The Silver Branch dagger is described under the assassin pkg deals, so I've got that one. And Bulgan's character description talks about his Yahgahn, which I assume is the REALLY curvy blade his got in his illo. That leaves the Ophelite Sun-Axe (presumably an Axe sacred to Ophel's Clergy...) The Ashurana, and the Barisi. What are the last 2? The AP and Throwable properties of the Barisi lead me to believe it is some sort of stilleto-type weapon. The Ashurana sounds like some sort of Katana-esque blade, but I thoug…
