In my campaign all magic users have two extra stats Mana and ManaRec. They use these to power spells in much the same way as END for regular stuff. Most Spells have compulsory Extra Mana ( END Cost ). Even spells that take 0 Mana to maintain require an initial burst of Mana to startup. This all works fine. Now I'm trying to design these 'Mana Crystals' that function as an ancillary Mana ( END ) reserve. Checking through the rules about END reserves it says something about 'user must choose whether Power can draw on END reserve or Personal END, if power can do both it's a +1/4 Advantage....... I don't want to use that as it would increase the AP of all…

Reading The Ultimate Martial Artist some time back, it occurred to me that something similar to the stances outlined there could be used for users of magic. Whereas the stances generally give a bonus to OCV or DCV with certain martial maneuvers, this magic version gives bonuses (in general) to the casting roll for certain types of magic. This thread has two purposes. First, to show an application of the rules that I found interesting, and hopefully will inspire others. Second, to get opinions on how I've written it up. Skill levels at the 3 point level are supposed to apply to "any three related skills", whereas at the 5 point level, they cover all skills w…

Hey All, I have picked up the original Fantasy Hero at a used book store and I am very impressed. What I am looking for is some of information on the older Fantasy Hero like erratta and such. Anyone have an idea of where this can be found? Also, is the new Fantasy hero as good? I have played ADD and D20 also Runequest and the rules in the original Fantasy Hero are simple and elegant and cover alot of ground . I especially like the spell creation rules. The thing that has put me of of the lateset edition of the Hero system is the size (the book is FREAKIN huge) and the expense. Is the new fantasy stuff just like the original book? Is the spell system as flexible? Als…

This idea came to me as I was reading a new book called There Will Be Dragons by John Ringo (who I picked up because I've read some of his military SF stories). Good stuff. Basically, in this story, it is some two thousand years in the future, and mankind is free from want, living in a post-economic society, where nanotechnology, advanced bioscience, weather control and teleportation technology enable it all to function. The only form of 'government' left is a council of thirteen people who essentially control the mostly autonymous system, each possessing a Key that enables them to vote for any changes done to the world. Such is their power that they can send self…

I'm thinking of of making a magic system for a sort of sci-fi/fantasy game (Think ridiculously epic magiotechnology), in which pretty much everybody can use at least simple magic. Mechanics-wise, you'll purchase a talent based on the highest number of active points any given one of your spells can have, and then each spell will be a 2+1 Background Skill that is complimentary to the Magic Power roll you have to make when you cast. Spells are powered by an environmental END reserve that powers all casters in the region. Background-wise: Magical energy is referred to as "The Music of the Spheres." It is measured in units of "Beats." It generally permeates all realit…

It looks like I have myself at least the three player minimum I need to start a table top game. I small sized hex paper, wet erase markers and shrinky dink paper. I have Valdorian Age, Fantasy Hero and a ton of other books. I've got a creative imagination and thanks to a poster on here, I even have the HD template for Valdorian Age. All I need is a campaign idea. I'd prefer to run a campaign that isn't locked in to Elweir but I certainly don't mind one that starts that way. Right now, the thought that I actually get to run a game is a bit too elevated on my mind for me to figure out what I would like to do in Valdorian Age though.

I have always enjoyed looking at other people's drawings that they make for their characters and have long wanted to do the same but alas I am how you say...artistaclly challenged. I have great ideas and can see what I want to draw but well I just cant get it right and my stick figures scare my children so I have to put the pencil down. I want to know if there are some easy to use programs that can in a sense help me bring my characters to life? I am putting out an S.O.S to any and all in the Fantasy Realm that have an incrediable talent help me find a way to ease my pain.

Hiya. I'm running a Post-Apocalypse campaign that has very little to do with any sort of Fantasy Campaign I know of. The only reason I'm posting on this particular forum chapter is the traffic: frankly I have a wicked chance of getting a good answer for this question here, so here I ask it. If thats bad form or anything, please move me to the appropriate place. No blood no foul, yeah? Okay, so in my campaign magic is like this: there are Tribals, Townsfolk and Vault-Dwellers. Only the Tribal's Druids, savage wastelanders with primitive superstitions, cast magic, and its only effective against other Tribals who have the Disadvantage: Psy Lim; Believes in Druid Ma…

I came across this when fiddling with Hero Designer. When I asked for the define it mentioned Fantasy Hero (I dont have it). I was wondering basically what it does. Particularly does it enhance (or the opposite effect) any characteristics, etc. Just wondering I remember in an old Star Wars rpg that Wookies had berserker rage where (if I remember) they got a boost in STR but lost out on knowledge/INT related stuff.

Anyone that plays the Turakain Age setting use or not use the Spell Focus in their magic system? I was thinking of not using it but wanted some feed back as to how it may affect the magic sytem for the setting. Any thoughts?

Its always bothered me when characters in FH buy up their charactersistcs up by more then a couple of points. In Champs its easy to justify anything, but for normal people its hard to impossible to improve any stats beyond your baseline. Generally people might improve what they grew into by 2 or 3 points barring a roidal dedicated weightlifter, but show improvement via skills. Is it one of those things you just ignore, am I alone in this?

This week, we had our 40th Anniversary, celebrating it by having a big "Convention-like" show catered by Subway with Smead, Sanford, 3M and all the other big office products manufacturers supplying prizes and stuff. One way to get prizes was to win in a trivia contest that I had to MC. About 500 customers showed up. I've never ran a game for "mundanes" before, let alone 500 of them. I didn't prepare one single joke or routine. I just just waited for my first round of contestants and found myself in Game Master Mode. Turns out, the improv skills one learns in Fantasy Hero can be used in social situations. Who knew? 22 years I've been GMing, and never tried…

What is A/R cost? I can not find anything about it. I am thinking this is End Cost for weapons. But I don't know. If not how do you do endurance cost for weapons?

As I've read through the forums, one thing seems to consistently crop up and that is the belief that Strength is under-priced. It even crops up in the FH rule book. One thing I haven't seen is whether or not there has been a solid consensus as to the solution. So I'm curious, what are your opinions on the subject and is there a way to change the cost of Strength (or any stat for that matter) in HeroDesigner? On a related topic should the END cost for strength be on a per 10pt basis or a per 5pt basis? Right now, I'm under the opinion that Strength should be increased to 2pts and I will be making the END cost be on a per 5pt basis. Do you think this might…

...that is, a sphere that anything impinging on a point of said sphere, is instantaneously teleported to the opposite point on the sphere and then continues unchanged in speed and direction. I thought of teleportation with an area effect advantage with the "fixed point" of the teleport being the "opposite side of the sphere". However, a sphere has a lot of points on it :-)

I'm a huge fan of the Wheel of Time series and am having trouble figuring out how to run the magic? Any ideas would be great... I know it would be a variable power pool but I don't know advantages and disadds to put on it. Any thoughts? Thanks. Harts

Looking through the Turakian Age magic system, I get the impression that clerical magic may be a tad bit too flexible. Wizards are limited to specific specialities like necromancy, sorcery, elemental magic, etc. There's an individual skill that governs each. Clerics can get by with the just the Faith skill for spellcasting, and, given the fact that the portfolios of the various gods cover almost every imaginable subject, just about any type of spell effect can be easily justified as "divine." Which is to say, if a wizard wants to turn somebody to stone, shoot fire and levitate, he needs three skills to do it. A cleric can call on Korthund, Ophel and Sirell…

How would you design a magic system for a religion similar to (but not necessarily identical to) the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages? My guess is that it would take the form of prayer. It would probably be very subtle in effect. What would you include or exclude? Would you use power frameworks? How powerful would it be? Note: I'm just looking for general ideas, not write-ups of spells. However, if you have something particular in mind, please share!

I posted one of my favorite Fantasy Hero characters, Mung, on my web log a while back, and thought some fellow Hero board visitors might want to take a gander. Here's the URL: http://robcrogers.blogspot.com/2005/08/character-of-week-mung.html And here's an excerpt from his background to whet your appetites... "Gray-skinned Tarmyk Firebristle was reputed to be the most taciturn and stoic of Khazak minstrels, if not the most skilled, yet even he was known to lift a calloused hand to his leathery cheek and brush away an unashamed tear when he related the tale of the fall of the Harralind Mines. The story sat heavy on Dwarven hearts, and was generally reserved …
