Well, I feel like an idiot. I've got unlimited access to a couple of resources from the Pulp era, and never thought to mention them until this evening. You may throw rocks (very, very tiny ones) at me for spacing out on this. #1) the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Eleventh Edition, copyright 1914, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1920 ,1922, 1924, 1925, 1926. This covers the college-level (and beyond) scientific knowledge of circa 1926; well, tables, formulae, and such. Highly useful if your character is a scientist, or any scientific training, and quite helpful if he's an engineer. It's way too much for me to scan the whole thing if there's no interest; if there is…

Hello all. I am looking for input on my next campaign. I am starting to plan my campaign and since I will be picking up the new Pulp Hero book and have some players that have shown great my next campaign will be a Pulp adventures game. I am wanting (hoping) to make a game that is 60% Indian Jones, 20% Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and 20% everything else. My Basic Idea The campaign starts in 1936. The PCs are hired by a multi-millionaire philanthropist for a “project†he is putting together. They travel to (some remote out of the way place TBA). (I may put an adventure together based on their travel.) Once at the TBA place they find that the philan…

Although technically a fantasy character (since Glory Road is "technically" a fantasy novel), I felt E.C. Gordon fit best in this section. Enjoy! I just picked up this gem from my local Barnes and Noble, for $12.95, less member discount. It's a hardcover reprint of a book published in '97, and consists of page after page of the paintings that made up the pulp covers, along with photos of some of the magazines, and descriptions of the various categories. All in all, a book that is bound to give some ideas. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?isbn=1402730357&itm=1 JoeG

I have been looking for some info circa 1930's and just cannot find any. It probably has to do with they way I am phrasing my searches. What I am looking for is: 1) Crew list and job breakdown for a passenger liner. 2) The same for a small freighter which could take on passengers. 3) The same for passenger trains. Any ideas/sources?

I picked up a copy of Boom! Studios newest comic book G.I. Spy and I enjoyed it immensely. G.I. Spy is set in the late 1930’s and follows the adventures of US Army Intelligence agent Jack Shepherd, who travels the world on behalf of the US government to battle threats to national security. In the opening issue he is in the Belgian Congo where he and a British agent named Kaitlin Hunter uncover a secret Uranium mining operation being run by the Nazi’s. So there you have it, secret agents, hidden bases, and Nazis. Throw in some killer robots, high tech gadgets and Albert Einstein and you have the makings for a good old-fashioned “two-fisted†pulp adventure. What’s…

Houdini, Tarzan, and the Perfect Man, by John F. Kasson I was trying to remember the title of this book when speaking with Steve Long at GenCon, and couldn't. So, I'm throwing it out here. The book is a triple mini-biography of Harry Houdini, Eugen Sandow, and Edgar Rice Bourroughs, with a view towards what their lives and careers said about turn of the century views on masculinity. It's not dull; each of these men are perfect Pulp characters, myth makers who helped shape the coming Pulp era and the Superheroes that followed. Non-fiction. Quick micro bios: Houdini - Escape artist, second tier strongman, paranormal debunker, self-re-inventor. As close t…

All right, it's that time again -- time to give us your thoughts on our upcoming RPG opus! We'd like to get your input on what you want to see in Pulp Hero. Before you comment, PLEASE READ THE OUTLINE AND DESCRIPTION I'VE POSTED BELOW. Every time I do one of these posts, I get a lot of suggestions for things that I've already explicitly stated are going to be in the book. Please, save yourself some time by checking out the description first. Along the same lines, please limit your comments to textual content only. I don't want to talk about art at this time; we'll get to that later if necessary. Please also keep in mind that I don't have time to do immense…

I am working on ships and deck plans for the SSatSPoA Pulp setting. I whipped up a little spreadsheet to give me volumes for various deck sizes. Basically 6.5 foot slices of the Rocket. Plugging in the formulas for cones and cylinders is easy. But the truncated cone formula I have isn't working. Since I found it on the web I cannot validate it isn't bogus and I cannot find my reference books. I can't correctly post the formula I am using because the board will not retain super or subscripts and the formula turns into garbage. ⅓ Pi (r12 + r1 r2 + r22) h r12 should be r1 squared, r22 should r2 squared. I converted it to: 0.33*3.14*(L13*L13+…

I'm one of those people who abandoned the Hero System right before 5th ed came out. However, I probably will be buying Pulp Hero and most of its supplements because I'm a diehard Pulp fanatic. Looks great, Steve! I was hoping that somebody could help me brainstorm a Pulp scenario for a local games day in October. I want to do something something like a Pulp-style "Big Trouble in Little China", but for some reason I'm having a tough time getting my head around it. In my head I can sort of see it, but I can't get it down on paper. I could use some suggestions about good places for action to occur, maybe some appropriate deathtraps, things like that. I'd like it to…

A review of Solar Smith and the Sky-Pirates of Arcturus! by Jason “JmOz†Wedel. Basic Information: Solar Smith and the Sky Pirates of Arcturus! Is the second of the no frill Digital Hero Adventures put out by Hero Games. It is a pulp style setting in the tradition of Flash Gordon & Buck Rogers, when rocket ships shot flames from the rear as brave square jawed heroes fought evil galactic overlords. It is only available as a pdf file, at a very reasonable $5.00. Setting Information: You are a member of a Starfleet like organization called ASTRA. ASTRA is part of the USA and other world powers (of the 1930’s) also have similar organizations. You patr…

Okay, I do plan on running this setting, as a one off game, using the sample characters. HOWEVER, I will be rewriting them all to 150 points, and adding two woman, as my group has two female players. I will also be ignoring the bit about no high ranking woman, one will be my second in command. Lunar is the other female character, she works the comm system, and is also Solor's Sister Sgt Laurie "Lunar" Smith Player: Val Char Cost 11 STR 1 18 DEX 24 15 CON 10 12 BODY 4 15 INT 5 12 EGO 4 18 PRE 8 16 COM 3 5 PD 3 5 ED 2 4 SPD 12 5 REC 0 30 END 0 25 STUN -1 6" RUN 0 2" SWIM 0 2" LEAP 0 Characteristics Cost: 75 …
