I'm thinking about using Time Travel as a medium for my PULP game. However, I've seen time game break down as paradoxes and Player goofiness derails good plot development. Now I'm not afraid of killing or 'Tales of the Crypting' a player if I have to, but what ideas do you have on keeping a time based Pulp game on track? Just simple guildlines would do...

Steampunk goes here, right? I'm tinkering with a post-American Civil War steampunk setting. One idea I'm toying with is that the Maya had highly developed their stone technology and spread north. After their civilization fell, they left various pyramids, ruins and stone machines across the Old West, some of which are now used by various Indian tribes against the encroaching Europeans. What I haven't settled on is a basis from which to develop these stone mechanisms. My initial thought was to have huge pyramids with various types of fortifications that could hold relatively well against cannon, airships and steam-powered war machines (like locomotive mechs). Si…

Check out the great Map created by Labrat that you can use to locate other Hero System players at: http://www.frappr.com/herophilesunited. Take a minute to add yourself to the map! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: I took a minute to update my original post to point to Labrat's original Frappr map instead of the new one I had created since there were more folks signed up in his. CD-ROMs of all NG maps from 1888 to 1999. PRINTABLE!!! Very cool, it tiles the print out put. It cost $16 at my local Costco. Requires Win 95 or greater. I plan on using it for customized maps for my pulp games that I run. You can also copy and past to a drawing program for truely customized maps.

a friend of mines father passed away about 2 years ago, and among his personal effects was a huge photo album from his days in the navy, he went in the service in 1930, and retired in 1953, there were over 200 photos and postcards in the book, we have now scanned all of them and copys of the CD are going to a couple of websites and historic archives some of these could prove useful for a pulp hero or war hero campaign, and I would happily provide copies of pictures, or even a complete set on CD, the whole set is 98mb uncompressed heres a website with a few samples http://gallery.gundo.com/gallery/shadowcat the pictures run the gamut from tourist scenes in…

I have now finished my second book in the Hard Case Crime series. The Colorado Kid by Stephen King is a great book and a read I would recommend to anyone interested in mysteries. However, if you are looking for inspiration for Pulp material it is not the book for you. The Colorado Kid is a story that tells the mystery of a man found dead on a beach on an island in Maine. The book does not come out and tell you what happened. It is up to the reader to figure things out. Even today, I'm not 100% positive I have figured it out but I'm pretty sure I know what did happen. Take these two things with you when you read The Colorado Kid. There are things mentioned in t…

There is bound to be a pulp adventure somewhere in this: archeologists using magnetic imaging technology have discovered that Qin Shihuangdi, the ruthelss tyrant who essentially created a unified China, was buried with his entire treasury. And it's still there, untouched for two millenia. Mind you, the bulk of the mountain of coins are bronze, and there's no gold in the hoard at all (Qin's regime didn't even use gold as money), but the adventuring possibilities are amazing when you think about it. Qin was able to build an enormous empire (especially for his day) essentially on his own resources, guile and utter disregard for the dignity of any other human being. The …

Well yesterday I finally managed to get my "Pulp Hero" campaign started. Players are quite powerful (220pts) and at least one of them got a bit cross when I overode his dice roll to keep the battle flowing (he should have hit his opponent but I wanted to make the fight last a bit longer, so I said he missed) but apart from that we had a good start. My scenario was simple; our heros (who all know each other and are members of "The Adventurer's Club", a name I am using instead of "Empire Club") decide to go off together for a "quiet" meal in Chinatown and , just as they were about to order desert, a Tong war erupted in the restaurant ! Lots of mayhem ensued with the female…

OK, in the real world, in 2005, all the major land animals have been found, right? Oh, there's undiscovered bugs in plenty, and some amphibians, maybe some snakes, perhaps a few rodents, but all the major things, like, say, carnivores, have been discovered, right? Wrong! http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,17485571%5E30417,00.html In the depths of Borneo a new carnivore has been found! And they still don't know what its face looks like! Oh, and the last time a carnivore was discovered in the region? 1930! I'm sure any GM worth his dice can use this as a springboard for a campaign/story-arc/scenario. Do your intrepid explorer…

i'm starting a new pulp hero game. i just wanted you guys to take a look at my setting and history and tell me what you think and critique it Historical Overview • Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin had his first successful airship flight in 1898 in Germany. • The Wright brothers died in 1899 in a tragic fire. • 1900 zeppelin travel becomes commonplace • 1905 first plane invented, flew for 30 seconds before crashing • 1914 the first world war is started • 1916 United States declares neutrality and supplies both sides of the war • 1928 WW1 ends in a draw when Britain signs the treaty of Paris. It will probably be quite a while before I get serious about running a pulp game, so I thought I'd throw out a few ideas to assembled HERO-dom in hopes someone else can get some use out of them. PHOENIX - post-WWI organization cobbled together from all the "losers" of recent years. German, Austrian, and Russian aristocrats predominate, but there are a variety from other sources as well. This collection of those fallen from power realized they have much more in common with each other, regardless of nationality, than they do with the various democrats, socialists, etc. that have come to dominate their former homes. Essentially a private "Foreign Legion" of evil, try…

I have noted that many of the science magazines have 70 or 75 years ago sections, which gives a great feel for the Pulp Era. Here is one that I found very interesting in Science News Online. From the October 12, 1935, issue WILL UNCLE SAM'S GAS TANK RUN DRY? Petroleum experts of all kinds, including geologists, chemists and statisticians, are in wide disagreement over the question of whether or not there will be a gasoline shortage in the United States within the next 5 or 6 years. Each is vehemently voicing his own opinion in the matter. So far, it has been impossible to produce it at a market price of much less than twice what an …

The ideas just keep itching... DER SCHNITZLEHAUS Background: Helmut Grubermann, like many patriotic German men of the time, volunteered his services to the military during the Great War. But an accident during training severed his left leg below the knee, and he was given a medical discharge before even learning how to march properly. Stuck on the home front, he worked hard at the brewery and took an interest in economics. After the war, Helmut realized that the punitive terms of the armistice would mean hard times ahead for Germany, and arranged for he, his wife, and their young sons to emigrate to America. They faced some discrimination in the United …

Hi! I'm looking for fierce, independent female heroes from the late 1930's-early 1940's from fiction and/or real life. People like Lois Lane, Marion Ravenwood (From Raiders of the Lost Ark), Amelia Earhart, and others. Does anyone have any ideas?
