Even though it was not mentioned in Pulp Hero as a gaming resource, Deadlands seems to be a pretty cool example of a "Weird Western" campaign suitable for the genre. Here are a couple of threads I found on it. Deadlands: Hell on Earth..uh....HERO Deadlands Hero

Since Pulp Hero is at long last off my desk entirely (the proofs having just been FedEx'd back to the printer), I thought I'd keep the ball rolling by discussing what supplements people would like to see. We're hearing a lot of enthusiasm for the book, which will hopefully translate into sales, which in turn will lead to supplements selling well. So, it can't hurt to listen to what people would like to see in supplements. Before you post, PLEASE READ WHAT I'VE WRITTEN BELOW REGARDING THE SUPPLEMENTS WE ALREADY HAVE PLANNED. It's a waste of your time and mine to suggest something we already have on the schedule or in mind. For the rest of this year, we have on t…

I would like to hear more about peoples Hero ideas for Pulp Heros. My first idea is based on one of My fav heros of all time from a old game. I am thinking of making him the Grandson of a hero I played in a Western Hero game a few years back. He will be kinda the "Mighty White Hunter" type, but more on him later. My other idea is a Occult Investigator but that might because I have been reading way to much Lovecraft as of late. So lets hear your ideas. (I must say that part of the lure of the Hunter is the idea of telling a GM that I pull out my 600. Nitro and prepare to fire)

While looking for something else, I came across a fact that might make for a scenario/story arc idea. But it would be, well, a peculiar situation. Now, the US miltary, like all militaries in the 20th and 21st centuries, has people sitting around doing contingency planning. That is, they go "Say, if we had to fight a war against the People's Republic of Svalbard, how would we best go about it?" And then they draw up plans (usually in broad, sweeping term, not in detail). In the 1920's and 1930's, the US military was doing this. One of the plans was "What if we have to fight the UK?" The result was "Joint Army and Navy Basic War Plan--Red". One of it's most import…

In casting around for a good, distinctive basis for a PBEM Hero game, I thought back to the old Crimson Skies setting. It seems to me that this is a setting rife with potential for adventure of all sorts, not just aerial combat, and with just a few changes it could be made to serve all sorts of characers and adventures. There are two issues with this, though: first of all, regardless of what changes are made, there will still be considerable emphasis on aerial combat, and I'm fine with that. However, how do you do that in PBEM and have it interesting? I don't want to ignore game mechanics and just do text descriptions, but in PBEM it would be very easy to get bogg…

I made an ex-gangster pulp character who still had a large amount of money stashed away. Now the rest of the gang is dead and his connection to them isn't strong enough (of what can be proven) for the law to get involved. But it's still an open secret that he has money. I gave him the disadvantage Hunted by Moochers to reflect it. Also since some of these moochers occasionally wants to try out the "romantic" life of a gangster and tag along I also gave him a DNPC I like to call pulp-wannabe. Now I know that "wannabe" is a recent word but do the two disads fit the pulp genre?

I've not been able to pick up Pulp Hero yet, but I'm curious. How do these work? Do they just allow rerolls or can they apply to other actions. I'm writing up stuff for my next game right now and was trying to decide if I wanted to include these or not. Thanks!

I haven't picked up a copy yet, but I read the initial section in the local store yesterday. I wanted to say that I do strongly appreciate the open recognition of the roots and truth of this genre. Such statements go a -LONG- way towards smoothing ill waters. The recognition of the very strong themes of sexism and racism in the fiction of the Pulp era was honest, thorough, not dismissive in the way so many people in the rpg-hobby have been over the issue (in this and other genres), and for once insistant about the need to stay aware of how it is dealt with in gaming. I didn't get the book yet, because I went home with Teen Champions and the Combat handbook inste…

I didn't see this on the board already. Apparently Stephen King has published a pulp type story in a series of books published by Hard Case Crime, an imprint specialising in pulpy detective stories: First heard about it at: http://avclub.com/content/node/41557 Publisher (love the covers): http://www.hardcasecrime.com/ It's just good to see Mr. King getting inspired by Mr. Long. But wait, I've never seen them both in the same place...

Anyone have any good maps or diagrams of Pulp-era train cars? I've got a couple of crude sources, but I figured maybe Herodom Assembled could point me in the direction of something better.

With the talk of catburglars in other parts of the forum, a concept just occured to me that would be appropriate for this catgorty because of the period. I'm trying to figure out how to a camapign in Paris during the Occupation (1940-1944). The Nazis have conquered France, and the legal mechanisms of the state are in their hands. Most believe the war to be lost, and that France is going to become a peramnent German sattelite. The resources of the legendary Surete police agency are now being used to hunt the political opponents of the Reich in addition to the criminals that are their usual quarry. In this environment, Paris' greatest and most honorable criminal m…

I debated where to place this, it could go in any of the genre areas really (except maybe Star Hero... okay... maybe there too) but this is the kind of stuff that my players do in the course of an adventure. I can see a Lovercraftian theme here. Man Breaks Display Case to Read Rare Book By The Associated Press Sun Oct 2, 7:34 AM MADISON, Wis. - A man smashed a display case at the Wisconsin Historical Society to steal a Revolutionary War-era book worth $5,000, authorities say. Matthew Brooke, 26, was charged Friday with felony theft of library materials and criminal damage to property. He went to the Historical Society on Thursday, according to a crimina…

What are people hoping to see in the Pulp Resource Guide? I'm hoping to see some pulp-era tanks and armoured cars like the Renault FT and the Rolls Royce, together with some more zeppelins. Cheers Alistair

The guys at penny-arcade.com are doing a series to promote the upcoming Far Cry video game, which has a strong--if not very deep--pulp flavor. Only four installments so far, but they are damned funny. Check it out: http://www.farcrygame.com/us/community_pennyarcade.php?screenid=9515

While Steve Long is one of the few, (hopefully) proud RPG writers that I would lay down cash for sight-unseen, I am curious exactly what Mr. S. John Ross contributed to Pulp Hero. Ever since I bought Uresia: Grave of Heaven for the BESM system, my admiration for his work has only grown. Anyone know?

Say, does anyone out there know of any good books covering the 20's-30's in Central Asia and nearby lands? (I.e., Afghanistan, India, Persia, China, and of course Russia.) I've gotten very curious about the area, following reading Peter Hopkirk's books on the 'Great Game' between the Russians and British -- as well as more bizarre tomes covering things like Shangri-La, hidden kingdoms of Tibetan cannibal sorcerers, Yezidi devil-worshippers, etc. (And let me recommend every book in the Lost Cities series by David Hatcher Childress for a pulp campaign!) I was thinking of using a Turkish master villain with his Varangian-descended Viking colony in the local mountains (t…

Looks to me like--over on the right side of the screen--Pulp Hero is the only logo without some animation. Hardly seems fair. What if the Hero descends from the top of the frame, and the Pulp ploomps out like a parachute? I think it'd be a gas!

Hi Folks: For my Firiends of Justice convention game, I need a name for a society of adventurers similar to the Empire Club, however I'd prefer not to use that name. So far, the best ideas I've had are: Brothers of Odysseus The Herculean Society Any suggestions?
