My sons are interested in doing a short Star Hero adventure during their summer break with me as their GM. I'm looking for something in the way of a good setting and adventure for their first foray into HERO. They've played a little D&D, so they get the idea of RPGs, but they're 10 and 12, so I'll be doing their character builds and whatnot (even with HD, it's probably a little much for the 10-year old, at least). I've GM'd D&D and Champions in the past. I'm not adverse to buying PDF content off the HERO games site, but there's not enough to get a feel for the contents. My 12 year-old is familiar with some of the tropes of sci-fi, while both are familiar with …

Greetings fellow Herophiles! Recently I have been endeavoring to continue work on my Space Opera campaign setting. Back in the day before everybody committed information to computer disk, I had this notebook I affectionately called "The Notebook of Doom" that included writeups of various weapons, armor and scifi equipment. I consider it to be some of my finest work. That notebook was lost in one of my many moves over a decade ago and I lament it's loss to this day. So now I have begun the writeups anew. I have already finished with laser weaponry but before I move on to particle weapons ("Blasters") I have decided to take on combat armor. I use a variety…

I'm working on an Enterprise-era reboot fic w. a new crew for the NX-01 and an altered Trek timeline. Let's face it, in canon, Kahn was exiled in... 1996. In fact, I'm only saying its set in 88 AFC [after first contact] w.out saying what year first contact happened in. I'm also updating some themes while trying to stay true to what made Trek fun. In some ways, Roddenberry's 1960's zeitgeist-standpoint on ethics and utopia leaves me utterly cold. For me, Trek's writers and actors made it work despite the creator.I want to focus on a classically (not radically) liberal optimism about of man's future and technology. And on Space Action! and Boldly Going! So, anyways, I'm loo…

Sharing this here because, even though the tech is totally different, in candor it reminded me of the old 'starships diving into gas giants to refuel' trope from various SF stories and/or games (eg: The Mote In God's Eye and the game which appears to have derived from it 'Traveller' (the classic version with the little black books)). Of course, it also has some plot hook usages in other genres as well. http://news.yahoo.com/us-navy-game-changer-converting-seawater-fuel-150544958.html -Carl-

I've never heard of this one before, but it looks interesting. If nothing else, you can have great visuals for your Star HERO campaign.

The short version is it will be being used as an 'in extremis' treatment to add working time for emergency situations. That said, an intriguing concept: http://www.cnet.com/news/suspended-animation-trials-to-begin-on-humans/

So, I was poking around the internet, thinking about Solar Hero and what kind of timeline human expansion throughout the solar system might take, and found this website. It's got some pretty interesting stuff on there...helps a lot with future history ideas.

Some news from the University of IL: Urbana-Champaign that has, IMNSVHO, some plot potential (both here and in other genres): http://scitechdaily.com/illinois-researchers-develop-synthetic-materials-self-repair/ And the paper in question: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/344/6184/620 -Carl-

One of the Webcomics I read had this post recently: http://survivingtheworld.net/Lesson2126.html Wich directed me to this page: http://www.palcohol.com/ Looks like the best way for astronauts to get a drink up there anytime soon, so it might be applicable to a Star Hero Setting. And I just remmebered the time in my youth when whe had instant powder for soda. Looks like somebody was tired of only getting grape flavour and wants the inebration of wine too.

As almost always is the case this article has plot hook usages in various genres, but at first glance I felt it belonged here. Your mileage may vary. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/10765132/Artificial-blood-will-be-manufactured-in-factories.html -Carl-

While it is from a well known (or at least partly known) comic news website, I thought that this 'incident' might serve as a worthy plot seed in various genres, including a near future cyberpunk setting...Thus the sharing of it here. http://topekasnews.com/asimo-robot-kills-two-scientists-japan-escapes-laboratory/ -Carl-

While it does not stricly belong into Star Hero this thread has been used for anything tech and "future". So when I stumbeled about this I thought it interesting: Soylent is a food replacement. The basic idea is that if you drink it, you do not have to eat. At all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8WpksPED_Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTkuvppi334 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8NCigh54jg It has several advantages: Inexpensive/easy production: You just need to make the chemicals and plants & animals only a are long know (ineffective) way of making those chemicals and distributing them. High mass effectiveness: Together with the first part, this might solv…

So, a gaming buddy of mine just mentioned to me that she'd be interested in playing a game where the PCs are (or can be) starships, citing Anne McCaffery's "The Ship Who Sang" as a reference. I'm rather intrigued by the idea, as I've read plenty of stories with characters who are no longer, or never were, quite human, and I've done a bit of my own thinking about what a person could be if they didn't have to pass for a greasy Mark 1 Mod 0 homo sapiens sapiens. Therefore, I'm starting a thread here to ask for information, advice, and random thoughts on the matter. Has anyone here ever run a game with such a concept, or given serious thought to it? Are there any books/st…

http://www.wired.com/2014/04/mit-whizzes-invent-magical-transforming-furniture/#x In my Traveller Hero game, this is more-or-less how I had envisioned the kind of furniture most people have on their starship. Able to take on specialized shapes for a variety of situations (within reason) you can make the most out of limited resources; the only thing you need is electricity, which is easy to generate in Traveller.

The title of this posting is my working title for an interstellar campaign I am working on, set 10,000+ years into the future. It borrows a bit from the Dune novels, the Deathstalker novels and Warhammer 40K, but I'm trying to steer away from the more grimdark themes. It is basically a galaxy of variant human species. Sentient aliens originating on other planets were never found, but humanity expanded outward, fell into a Dark Age and evolved along different paths on different worlds before the empire reconnected them. The galaxy is organized into an empire of feudal structure, using Western European titles for now: Duke, Baron, etc. One question arises from this. Ass…

Every one in a while there pops up a question about Starship Plans in this Forum. As it happens there is a new game, still in Alpha but with early Access - Space Engineers. Wich is basically "a Minecraft just for building SciFi Bases and Ships, with Newtonian physics and damge model". Using the quite advanced simetry copy and "builda line/plane" features, people made so truly gigantic, detailed ships. So much they started to get lost in thier own creations.. Ships Like the Goliath: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4f3L6uET1o Note that there is a technical weakpoint: Someone put the hangar right above the reactor/fuel storage. Let's hope ther is no accident...…
