I'm looking for tests that someone...not necessarily a human...would give to newly encountered aliens to decide whether or not they qualify as whatever the test giver would class as "people". Any suggestions?

The rights to the Master of Orion name seem to be held by Atari's IP company, used without permission, but not intended to be infringing. If any part of this ever sees publication, it would likely be as an APG for Star Hero. This is my rules, ideas and works in progress, posted online for reference and accessibility. I'd like to keep up a posting rate of once or twice a week. So what is Master of Orion, and why am I remaking it in Hero? The computer game is advertised as 4X, exploration(of galaxy), expansion(of empire) exploitation(of resources), and extermination(of enemies). *Alien races with special abilities, rapidly increasing technology, ground and spac…

Ok, so I know that the Sci-Fi genre is often more well known for the prevalence of energy projectile weapons. But you have to admit, we do like watching a good old fashioned duel to the death with weapons that even modern day humans would consider antiquated, albeit unusual. So I decided that since I want to have characters written up for Star Wars, Star Trek and Babylon 5, I really would love to have all their favourite ancient and noble weaponry available. So I thought I might ask for some write-ups of stuff related to them. Obviously I would like to find out about any that I can, so first a few lines of fluff would be great. Then a mention of the stats of the weap…

I really hope there are some Hero System-centric products from this; after a wonderful original campaign book, it seems like only Savage World rules have been supported... http://atomicovermind.com/main/dar/2013/04/17/adventures-after-ragnarok-a-call-for-submissions/?replytocom=150#respond

This is the game we play: NEMESIS SQUADRON Nemesis Squadron was originally (loosely) based on the old comic book Alien Legion and the movie The Dirty Dozen. However, it's grown far beyond those humble beginnings. This is Part 1 of the packet. Part 2 is too large to post these boards. If you like what you see and seriously want to see more I'll e-mail you Part 2 (Including character creation rules and 18 races taken from various Sci-Fi sources). PM me with your e-mail address included please.

At the frontier of explored space lies the prison planet known as Purgatory. Significant system defenses prevent landings by unauthorized vessels. Once you are there, you stay there. Purgatory is a nominally-liveable world with an almost standard Oxygen-Nitrogen atmosphere and weather comparable to the various latitudes of Earth, partially terraformed only by the introduction of enough earth species sufficient to render it into a tough but survivable ecosystem. Essentially, it is a far future version of Australia. There are no guards. Prisoners are given a parachute, supplies for a month and then shoved out at three thousand feet. It is a one-way trip, and …

A really fun article on how some Nasa engineers wanted to brush up on their knowledge of liquid fueled rockets. So, they went to the Smithsonian, "borrowed" one of the F1 Rockets from a scuttled Apollo mission, and took it apart to scan it. Once it was back together, they decided to light that 40-year-old candle. http://arstechnica.com/science/2013/04/how-nasa-brought-the-monstrous-f-1-moon-rocket-back-to-life/ (caveat, from the article, it looks like they only ran the generator portion of the F1. Still awesome)

This is an idea that started banging around in my head last week, a setting that combines the Planetary Romance and Post-Apocalypse genres. That setting is Earth at the dawn of the 6th Millenium, following the collapse of civilization. While I would call it part of the planetary romance genre, I would like to give it a harder sci-if feel. Towards that end, one of the staples of rubber science is not present. No FTL travel: the best speed achievable by manned space flight topped out at 99.5% of light speed. Travel to the stars was usually done by vehicles such as Bussard Ramjets, the crew using cold sleep to reduce the need for consumables and staying awake in sh…

Looking through the various Star Hero books, I can't find an indicator of when the technology to build space elevators becomes available. According to Alien Wars, at the time of the Xenovore Wars Humanity was ATRI 9 on the Senate Worlds and ATRI 8 on the Colony Worlds. It also states that orbital elevators are "cheap and easy to use" and "popular on many worlds", but it doesn't indicate if that only applies to Senate Worlds or to all Human worlds. So...ATRI 8 or ATRI 9 for space elevators? Given the advanced material technology that would be needed, I'm leaning toward 9.

In thinking about an interstellar setting that has a more "realistic" feel, one of the things I'm considering is speed of travel across the stars. I'm considerig using for the setting a bubble of explored space that is roughly a hundred light-years across but wanting to portray it as "Age of Sail" speeds for interstellar travel. If I go with a speed of two or three light-years per week of travel, it would take months to get from the core world to the frontier. Is that too slow or about right? In this setting, I'm also considering having all FTL engines travel at the same speed. The technology moves you between the stars at a set rate, and it's fixed at that spee…

I'm currently working on a smaller-scale interstellar setting (a bubble of explored space less than 50 light-years across, centered on Sol), and I'm considering how many Earth-like worlds to have. I realize it's my setting, and I could set it up however I please. I could have the local group of stars near Sol littered with life-supporting worlds that are Earth-like, or at least capable of sustaining humans. On the other hand, rarity makes something more special. If, within that fifty light-year wide bubble I have only two or three worlds capable of supporting humans and comparable sentient beings, that gives a different feel than if I had sixty or seventy worlds. …

Okay, so I'm moving back to my hometown of Omaha here shortly and it's been several years since I've been back so I've been looking around for potential gamers in the area... I see that a store there has a "D&D or Star Wars or Shadowrun" night... guess it depends on who shows up... Now, I've been wanting to run a Star Wars game using HERO rules for the longest time and my weaselly mind is thinking this might be the perfect opportunity to turn some d20 people over to the Dark Side, as it were.... I'm familiar enough with the HERO rules, I think, to manufacture Stormtroopers, Wookie templates, and so forth.... I've got a pretty good idea of how I'd handle the…

I just finished watching the pilot for the "Defiance" TV series, and it left me wondering how something like it would work as a game setting. For those that haven't seen it, I guess you could probably think of it as a fusion of "Deadwood" and "Farscape" mixed with "Alien Nation" into a single post-apocalypse version of Earth in the year 2046. A pretty good summary can be found at wikipedia by searching for Defiance. What do others think?

We've rejoined the space community here in Lake Geneva and restarted a version of the old NEMESIS game (see sig below for more info). We're really stoked to get back to our version of STAR HERO (recently nominated for 2 ENie Awards)!!! We dove right into the game and have already recreated an entire galaxy from scratch (just 2 more to go - You can find the map on the NEMESIS thread here). The one thing I'd like to do on this trip through the TGU is explore ship-to-ship combat. But I'm so bogged down with characters, planets, galaxies and plot lines that I don't really have the time to create finished star ships. That's why I'm asking you all for help... I'm hop…

In the star system of Sigma Draconis, located 18.8 light-years from Earth, a single planet orbits in the outer region of the "life zone" for this star, named Alsafi by Terran explorers, after the old name for It. No other planetary bodies or celestial debris exist in this system, as if it was swept clean somehow. The planet has a single small moon, roughly one-third the size of Luna but somewhat closer than Luna is to Earth. It has no oceans, but it does have numerous seas and lakes, the largest of which is roughly the size of the Mediterranean. Countless riverbeds exist that are dry for most of the year, flooding in the spring with torrents of water from the melting…

Question Man probably knows this, and I'll check the genre thread in a second, but has anyone had any experience with building Mecha (piloted robots) for 5th Ed, and would you build them as straight characters, or vehicles? Vehicles would be more technically accurate, but is also a lot more cumbersome. Thanks!

Basically the idea is that the PCs are rebels in the TNG-era Federation. However TNG itself is basically the regime's propaganda, chock full of absurd pronouncements about how they have eliminated all crime, poverty, terrorism, and materialism, statements that are adhered to as the party line even when they are obviously contradicted in specific episodes. 1. Money: They no longer use "money" as we know it. Legally, people no longer exchange goods and services with each other. Everyone in society has a guaranteed minimum ration of energy and living space and free access to the net. People who are considered to be doing things that are socially valuable get "social du…

So, it's that time of year again, for submissions to the One Page Dungeon contest. Entries can be submitted until the end of April. What's that? You have no idea what I'm talking about? Well, get the hence to here: CampaignWiki.org: One Page Dungeon Contest 2013 The One Page Dungeon Contest is a bit where people contribute one page scenarios of their choice. Most of fantasy, but there are a fair number of sci-fi, western, and other genres represented. Since I realized there was a dearth of sci-fi, that's what I've been submitting. This year, I'm thinking of submitting my Starport Tiles, developed in my Traveller Hero home game. I could probably whip up a "c…

I registered over the weekend, but my activation e-mail never arrives, so I can't log in. The site says to contact a board administrator, but there isn't a link to do so, and I can't see who exactly to contact without signing in, which I can't do. If someone here is a member on those boards, please help me out.

Hi Folks! I just recently started a Star HERO campaign -- this is my first ever Star HERO campaign, but probably my sixth or seventh HERO campaign. So far everything is going pretty smoothly, except the one space combat we ran, which was a total mess. After that combat, I decided to actually read the rules for starship combat and...oy vey. Most days I love the toolbox approach of HERO System, but not today. There are too many options to choose from! So I thought I'd ask the forum for feedback. Which options do you use, how do you run starship battles, etc.?
