This is a campaign I have been kicking around for a while, and recently polished up. Commonwealth of Suns: A Brief Introduction Setting: Billions of Solar systems orbit the galactic core within the sphere of Traveled Space, and each system supports life in some way. Connecting them all are the Spinward and Contrary Hyperstreams, traveled by pilots and pilgrims, paladins and pirates. The Players: All PC's are citizens of the Commonwealth of Suns, a group of over 1000 sovereign systems bound by low tariffs, democratic principles, and the belief in the dignity of personkind. Members of the Commonwealth enjoy a First World standard of living, and the right to t…

One think I've wondered about cyberpunk-style worlds is where the "evil Megacorps" make their money in dystopian conditions. Who is buying their products when everybody either works for them, works for a rival megacorp, or is a penniless non-person under the law? If nobody has any money, how does a megacorp support itself? Where's the profit in going into shooting wars with rivals instead of out-competing them in the marketplace? And if there are few real profits to be made, how does the corporation support its massive structure?

I have found this map of stars within 50ly: http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/50lys.html I would like to generate a star system around each of these stars, but the rules are quite lengthy and this will take a lot of time. I am a professional software engineer, so I started writing a program to do it, but the tables are a pain in the butt. Are there any good solar system generators out there that are of the same detail as our beloved HERO System?

I'm building some Combat Armor based on the Traveller RPG Combat Armor descriptions. The Combat Armor in Traveller requires VaccSuit skill. I'm assuming that means that using Combat Armor is similar to operating in a VaccSuit. In Hero I either require Vacc Suit as a Skill or as a Proficiency. I'm still going back and forth with this overall. Here is what I have determined I need to build for. 1. VaccSuit Skill is a proficiency. 2. Manuevers in a VaccSuit under gravity would be normal with encumbrance. 3. Manuevers in Zero-G will require Zero-G Skill rolls. So now how do I build the armor so that it requires proficiency? Right now I"m modeling it…

I'm tinkering with a short-run space opera game, and one component I want to get right is ship-to-ship combat. Since space dogfighting can be run with essentially normal combat rules, I'm going to put together a Martial Arts package for starfighting (think Han Solo running from the Empire in ESB). I'm just wondering if anyone else has done anything similar? If so, I'd be interested to see it. -AA

Putting this here because Star Hero has more use for it... There are maneuvers for Martial Arts, for ranged fighting, even for Bricks. Fliers, whether supers or in Snub fighters, need more options than move by and move through. Unless these are published in a book I haven't bought yet - anyone want to help me come up with them? For instance: how about an immelman? DCV bonus? Phases?

In most SF programs it seems as though any ranged weapon will use some form of energy - be it laser, sonic, plasma, or some fancy sf energy. With only a few rare exceptions (ala Firefly) will this standard mold be broken. Even in such programs as Firefly, they have their energy weapons (they just do not play a major role). With this in mind I got wondering, is the future of modern projectile weapons limited? Are projectile weapons doomed to extinction, or is there some possible future with projectile weapons?

What are the best examples of "Fins and Ray-Guns" fiction? The art deco style of science fiction/science fantasy that was popular through the 50s or so? Movies, books, comics, TV -- I'm especially interested in stuff that's still in print and relatively easy to find. And I'm not limiting myself to stuff that was produced prior to the 50s -- stuff that was written more recently with the same sensibilities (either played straight or ironically) is good too. Things like Twilight (by Howard Chaykin, not Stephanie Meyers!) or Dan Dare (by Garth Ennis) are cool. Help a bunneh out!

I'm too ignorant to even be called a newbie, but I have a question. Does the latest version of HERO still use hex maps? I had heard that it was moving to a more free form movement system, and that would be great news for me. I create starship maps as a hobby/business and for years haven't been able to meet the needs of HERO players because I build the grids into the floors and doing a separate hex floor just isn't feasible (it's built in early in the process and so would mean most of the production pipeline being repeated). If the hexes are gone, then my armada might now be usable for the game! It depends on whether the 1 inch squares in the art make them unsuitable …

Cel-Maris Station BhM-1003 PDF: $5.00 Star Hero 6th Ed Great food, aliens, and interstellar intrigue! Tom Rafalski's Cel-Maris Station provides a science-fiction mini-setting usable for the entire spectrum of roleplaying, from "realistic" to "space opera." Originally built to carry a large number of colonists to the fledgling Mars colony, the cycler station has been converted to a vacation cruise for the rich, absurdly wealthy, and those with Real Money. Welcome aboard as one of the vacationers, their retainers, a crew member working off the cost of transit to a new home, or perhaps an alien gourmet chef. * A quick introduction to transit stations and…

I was recently going to start a campaign based around the Galactic federation well after the Terran empire falls. The premise is that durring the Empire times and after there is a system called Corma, that Old ships, derelict, decommissioned, confiscated and various other reasons for ships to be there. In addition Corma has around its second planet a world called Eden, its a earth like world where the weather is tropical all the time, and the people there are very friendly. The empire setup a star-base there as a vacation world. Corma also has a singularity orbiting its star, this is where the empire setup the shipyards, around the singularity. several bases were setup to…

Saw this online and, while it also has applicability to other genres as well, the coin toss of where to post it came up here.....so take a gander: http://phys.org/news/2012-12-quantum-stealth-material-invisible.html From the article: "...."Groups now know that it works and does so without cameras, batteries, lights or mirrors... It is lightweight and quite inexpensive. Both the U.S. and Canadian military have confirmed that it also works against military infra-red scopes and thermal optics," he said. Cramer has announced the Quantum Stealth material as "light-bending material," which is "non-powered adaptive camouflage that portrays what is behind the user …

I'm still toying around with this idea, as I just started working on it recently. But here's what I have so far: When mankind travelled through the stars, a mining colony was founded in a distant part of the Milky Way. The planet orbited a yellow-white F0V star and was hotter than earth, especially during perihelion. But it had a rich supply of energy crystals, so humans and other races settled there to mine these crystals. Many grew rich over the years, but overmining stripped the planet of most of the useful crystals. Then the Galactic War began. The mining planet was one of many worlds abandoned and forgotten. The civilizations in the planet collapsed, leavin…

Thanks to gog.com for bringing out a lot of old games, I stumbeled over one game I never got to play earlier (but always wanted to try): Space Colony According to tvtrops.org it's best described as "Strongholds mixed with Sims": http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpaceColony Here is the demo and the way to purchase it on a fan Site: http://www.spacecolonyfans.net/sc_downloads.html While playing it I had several ideas of how to adapt the missions for a Space Campaign by throwing a pair of heroes into the situation (either instead of the game characters, or in addition to them), but I don't have a game running right now. Still I think the missio…

Here is a rough draft to a .pdf file I am working on for my Space Opera campaign setting (Dark Universe) which details the available Laser weaponry in the setting. One major thing missing from the chart is the price of each weapon system (still figuring out the economic structure for the campaign) Also, I did not "stat out" the weapon writeups. They have no point costs associated with them. This can be easily done if one merely breaks down their capabilities according to the specific version of Hero you are working with. Pretty much all lasers are OAF, Independent with STR minimum, Beam and no knockback limitations. All have the …

The old space colony in the Omicron Eridani is "technically abandoned" yet thousands of people still live there -- squatters, outlaws, refugees, lost souls and others who slipped through the cracks in the galaxy have congregated there over the years since the colony was written off. I often think of the place as a science-fictional version of Roanapur from the Black Lagoon anime. To visit Omicron Colony is to tempt fate; to live there is to invite death. If you have any ideas for characters to populate this place, please post them here. Thanx heaps.
