I'm trying to come up with a good name for the galactic empire I am discussing in the thread "Feudal Stars" that is not overdone. Currently, I am just calling it the Imperium, but I'm curious as to what other names might work and are less cliché.

I still need to work into the original source paper but I think this has various plot usages, in various genres. Sharing it here because of its xenobiological possibilities. http://www.fromquarkstoquasars.com/scientists-create-life-like-cells-out-of-metal/ -Carl-

I was prowling through DriveThruRPG.com and saw an ad for an end of license sale for Starblazer Adventures. I just thought I'd share the link. http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/browse.php?cPath=179_4535 After 3/31, it's gone forever from Cubicle 7's catalog. There is also a fantasy title called Legends of Anglerre for the same $5 end of license sale, available here. http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/browse.php?cPath=179_7951 They're on sale until 3/31.

In looking at the popularity of games set in the Warhammer 40K universe, I'm wondering if part of the setting's appeal is the weird technology nature it has. It's a far-future setting, but the advance of technology stalled out in its past and its presence seems more about rote use than understanding how things work and making further advances. Dune and game settings like it have a similar feeling. Science doesn't advance and things have a static feeling. Is it the schizoid feeling in the treatment of technology that is part of the appeal of such settings?

I have yet to fully digest this article, and have not accessed the source paper. Those disclaimers aside, I saw this and could not help but think of how the Xenomorphs biology was described in an Aliens gaming supplement I once read (probably incomplete, based solely on my memory version of the concept: as a 'handwave' to explain the whole acid for blood thing they used the idea of having the species metabolize electrical energy - ie: acid and tissues forming some sort of battery, etc). Because of that tie-in I decided to share this here, though there are obviously other uses in other genres (Monster Hunter International and Champions both spring immediately to mind) …

You are a spacer on a tramp freighter. an officer. There is no standard crew, robots do the grunt work. As an officer and co-owner, you and five other people are getting ready for a voyage that could be a year or more in length. One swing will be 5 months between planets. This is a long time to spend among friends. You cabin is relatively spacious for a ship, its about the size of a one bedroom apartment. There are ship board amusements. WOW is still being played on the Faster than Light galactic net (still strong after 500 years). So, Would you buy a..um...personal companion bot? Be greeted in your cabin with a smile and a welcome. Programed to keep the …

It happens regulary that someone ask for a good name for a Stellar Super Hero (sun powered theme, ex-astronaut). And of course it helps knowing how our immediate stellar neighbourhood looks like and what types of Stars are out there. I happen to know this area a bit (read a lot about it on Wikipedia), so I though I write this down as a reference for others. Gas Giants: Practically every Gas Giant is a failed Star. Or stars are just really big Gas Giants. Every Gas Giant heavier then 13 Jupiter masses is a candidate for a Brown dwarf. Brown Dwarf: These occupy the border between "Gas Giant" and "Star". The one reason they are not your average star is that they d…

I had a random math thought today, and thought I'd share. Real Numbers can be plotted on a number line. Using that as the X axis and Imaginary numbers as the Y axis, you can plot Complex numbers on a plane. What happens when we take that a step farther? Inventing a Z axis allows us to create another new class of numbers, but what does it mean, what do we use it for? I decided to call it the Strange? axis, and make Strange? math that which was required to do calculations for warp fields, subspace and all things FTL. (Yes, the question mark is a required part of the name.) The higher the arc along the Strange? axis, the faster travel or shorter distance betw…

As far as I know... there aren't any artificial gravity in terracide. How space stations work? If Spin gravity is being used, what kind of layouts there are? Basically I would like to have one layout of space station that I can use in campaign at this week.

The Aeromobil V2.5 prototype roadable aircraft has achieved its first flight. Due to some unsubstantiated hyperbolic claims regarding the feasibility of "flying cars," this field of vehicles labors under something of a cloud. However, there have been many positive developments in the area over the last few years, and it seems likely that roadable aircraft will be marketable within ten years. So, in a fit of fanboyish enthusiasm, I thought I'd crank out a Hero version. You can find the .hdc file here. Vehicle - Aeromobil V2.5.pdf

Working on the Aeromobil V2.5 reminded me of the Martin Jetpack, a personal flight system which is expected to be start delivering in mid-2014. The Martin system isn't really a "jetpack" per se, using two ducted fans for lift, The interesting part, to me, is that the target audience for the first units isn't jetpack fanboys or sci-fi nerds such as myself, but first responders. So now, in my imagination, after I have crashed my Martin Jetpack due to my own lack of flying skills, I'm imagining a jetpack-suited first aid woman flying down to get me. To me, that's even cooler than I had originally imagined for being more plausible! The .hdp file is available here. Equipm…

This is a game concept that I had come up with a year or so ago and figured it was past time I put it up here for people to contribute and share. The name of the campaign I was using was: The premise is that a NASA probe to the red planet discovers a derelict ship and the probes notes the language on the control surfaces is in Sanskrit. NASA sets up a small base on Mars and eventually reverse engineers the craft's FTL drive. Because of a reference to a threat found in the time degraded data archives, they send a military team to a set of coordinates based on data in the archives. They arrived to the system and find out that not only that they are a part of a community …

One of the ongoing disputes in physics is that between the notion of "event horizons", the region surrounding a black hole from which not even light can escape, and quantum mechanics, which posits that such a thing violates General relativity. Now, according to the man widely considered the smartest man on the planet, quantum mechanics wins. Stephen Hawking, who built much of his fame on examining the properties of black holes and event horizons, has a new theory which replaces the event horizon with a more benign construct called an “apparent horizon”. An apparent horizon still holds matter -- but only temporarily, after which is expels it into a garbled form, prese…

I suspect that there are other threads that deal with this idea, however this image inspired me to begin another one....The idea is to share any sort of image that might visually depict a 'plot point or scene' in an adventure or campaign setting.

It's patchy and needs a lot more work, but for any Trek fans who want to use the info, I've posted TrekHero.pdf at http://rbrucecom.tripod.com/ I've got package deals, Federation races, some weapons, tricorders, etc, but there's lots of work to go. Any CONSTRUCTIVE criticism appreciated, but REMEMBER that it is very much a work in progress getting all my notes from 20 years ago hauled together and converted to 5E.

Attached are my adventure notes for today's Star Hero game. If you like, read them and comment. This evening, I'll post again and let everyone know how it went. I suspect it will all blow up in my face. I'm the type of GM that lets his players wander from the plot. For all I know, they'll not take the job and I'll end up improvising for 6 hours again this week. Amaryllidaceae.pdf

Hi all. Well im new at Hero system. But love the rules. I will try to create an Star Wars universe (Old Republic) Normally we play the D20 star Wars Saga edition (Old Republic) I'm about to convert, the characters from D20 to Hero. And here is my question! How would you convert an Jedi Master? (in d20 he is a CL13(the max CL-lvl is 20 in that game)) This is my idea until now. Characteristic Max for Human 20 Skill Max 16 Powers, weapons , Amour and Items - No limits (but they can spent CP to tune the weapons esp. A light saber Killing attack hth 2d6, could be 2d6+2 CP spent 5) Charter starting points 125cp Complication 50cp Characte…

This is part 1 from first gaming session. We started our first Terracide campaign. Brave adventurers were travelling from Complex to Marathon Free Station. Earlier PCs did lose their own ship, Sarah's Tears in mystery attack which destroyed their ship totally. Attacker was unseen and un recognized. That is why PCs have to use public transportation at this point. They used passenger cargo spaceship, which was capable of FTL 3.0. Galaxyfarer, is fine ship. It is 46 meters long, in three floors. Two floors are for passengers and one floor is cargo bay. Heroes, like they sarcastically call themselves, were bit bored during their trip. Two weeks in spaceships is ra…
