A quick question -- if you wanted to run a campaign based on, or inspired by, the film version of Guardians of the Galaxy, which genre set would be a better fit -- Champions or Star Hero? Points for Champions: the core group of the Guardians have some pretty impressive abilities physically, mentally, or technologically. If you're building characters like them, you might want to build them as supers. Points for Star Hero: the Guardians live in an expansive universe. The technology, though impressive, is about par for the civilized part of their galaxy (though it's supertech by earth standards, it would hardly raise an eyebrow in Nova Prime). The characters who are …

There is an interesting setting called galactic civilisations, wich just got it's 3rd installment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwYfjMlsuSk In that setting aliens developed FTL travel, but it never amounted to anything usefull. Both parties in an exchange had to build a humongous gate, wich needed tons of power to operate. Don't even think about interplanetary warfare, trading or the like. They freely send probes through the universe and shared that tech, but there was never any actuall military action or colonisation going. One generic evil/agressive empire actually launched a military invasion once. By "sneaking" a gate at STL speed to the target system. It …

In the Stargate Series th Goa'uld had shields that could be penetrated by slow moving objects, but not energy weapons and bullets. The thing is there are liquids with similar properties - they get harder the stronger they are put under stress. There are liquids that will shatter like a solid rather then flow out of the way of a bullet. Or just be solid and stop bullet speed objects like a solid ceramic plate. These liquids are called Non-Newtonian fluids: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Newtonian_fluid There actuall experiments to make this into wearable armor. Greatest issues so far might be the longterm viability of the material (it ages poorly and fast) a…

I've lately begun eyeing Hero's Terran Empire setting and thinking how I could merge aspects of Firefly into it. A PC group wandering the stars on the fringes of Imperial control in their own ship should be quite doable. What border zones of the Empire might work best for such a mashup?

So I re-wrote Cyber Hero. Found a copy on EBay, started typing. More than 52000 words later, I'm ready to link it to all of my other games by way of the Via, the network of inter-dimensional pathways that meander through Astral Space, some of which connect to past-time echoes of Earth, possible futures, fantasy worlds, magical versions of Earth... you name it. Almost 20 years ago, my then-very-small son created a setting with cyberpunk elements. In his story an Arcology suffered an accident that sent it to a world of steaming jungles and dinosaurs. There might have been aliens, but I can't recall. Point is, I'm resurrecting it now that the game is ready to be played.…

It occurs to me that there is a jumble of ideas just rolling around in my head at any given moment. It also occurs to me that I haven't actually done anything towards running or designing a setting in a long time. I don't know if I can keep anything cohesive in my brain, but I really feel that it is time to start putting ideas out onto the table. I don't know where these ideas are going or what my end game, if I even truly have such a thing, is. All I know is that my brain, though active, has been stagnant with the lack of expression. So I am starting with Space Opera as a setting. It is always been my second favorite genre and my favorite genre to run. I tend towards…

Hi folks, Not to detract at all from the Traveller HERO conversations going, but we've been asked to work on another setting sourcebook for a space opera type setting to HERO 6th edition. If I keep getting asked, I must be doing SOMETHING right... I'd like to get feedback from people on what they do and don't want in a HERO sourcebook setting for Star Hero. Here's where I'm coming from... The IP is purchased, so we don't have the same restriction we did with Traveller HERO, we can do almost anything we want with it. Now, we've done a lot of work reorganization the information so we can see the light, medium, and dense material, information-wise. We'll hav…

So, back in the day I did up 5E versions of Warhammer 40K Space Marine power armor, based on an article that examined them in a "historical" context. That article is long vanished from the Internet, and there've been new editions of both WH40K and Hero System since then, to say nothing about a Space Marine RPG (Deathwatch, from Fantasy Flight Games). I dug out the old prefab I did and took a look. Yeesh! I've refined my conversion capabilities since then, I think! I've completely redone the power armor (or "armour," since the game is British and uses the English 1.0 versions of words) and uploaded it to the Vault. I also made a pdf of the suit in a nicer printable for…

In the grimdark future of the Warhammer 40K universe space marines battle the enemies of Mankind, usually xenos or the minions of the Ruinous Powers, in a never-ending religious crusade based on their faith in the Emperor of Mankind. Divided into Chapters, these genetically-engineered supermen develop from the gene-seed of their Chapter Primarchs. Each space marine is the epitome of the human warrior, but this package deal forms the basis of their abilities. It is derived from the description of General Space Marine abilities in the Deathwatch RPG, as well as close reading of the Codex. It is not meant to be a full space marine -- even so, it clocks in at 150 points. …

So in Star Trek, they say the greatest strength the Borg possess is that they don't have leaders; that decisions are made by the Collective (the later introduced Borg Queen bullcrap not withstanding). While it's true that individual leaders can indeed make mistakes (and I'll go as far as to say pretty much every 21st century head of state on this ball of mud has thus far demonstrated that they have manure for brains), collectives aren't quite so infallible either. Enter the concept of Groupthink. Cliff Notes for those unfamiliar with the concept: It's when a group of people, for the sake unity and harmony, make some really sh*tty decisions that end in tears. Unless the Bo…

I had some time and went ahead and converted the Warhammer 40K Space Marine Terminator armor to Hero System 6E as well as the regular suit. Again, I made an effort to abide by the fluff text in the Codex and the Deathwatch RPG. The prefab file can be found here, and again there's an armor card. A while back I worked up a prefab file in Hero Designer for the implants a Space Marine undergoes in the Warhammer 40K universe. I tried working backward from the description of the effects in this article. I did it for 5th edition Hero System, and then never ended up using the prefab -- the campaign for which I made it never got off the ground. Then I ran into a user on RPG.net asking about Warhammer Space Marines in Hero System 6E. I dusted off the file, updated it, and uploaded it to the repository. You can find the package here; it contains the prefab and a printout of the package deal in the old Hero 5E text box format. I also did up the Space Marine Power Ar…

So, this is too late for me, since the PCs in my long-running Traveller HERO campaign have been in-play for five-six years, but I got to thinking about the actual game-within-a-game of character creation. In Classic Traveller, the system was infamous for the completely random way you generated your PC. You might have joined the Army, but you could come out of the service with a decent Computer skill, or entered the Navy and become an Air/Raft driver -- if you came out at all. The Survival roll each four-year term (or each year if you used the advanced character generation tables in Book 4: Mercenary, Book 5: High Guard, Book 6: Scouts, and Book 7: Merchant Prince). Ho…

So, my players finally got together enough scratch after four years of game time (both in and out of game) to afford battle dress for the team. It was unexpected, so I quickly looked through my notes and found "IISS Walkabout Armor" which is the less combat-heavy version; I had noted earlier in the campaign that if I eventually let them buy battle dress, this was going to be the kind, as "real" battle dress is insanely hard to find in my Traveller universe (IMTU), at least for regular tramp freighter crews. Sure, a rare few thugs can get them, but they are established members of their organizations, not fly-by-night types who might get the supplier in extreme amounts of t…

Greetings, I have a character who is becoming the go-to guy for piloting/vehicle operations and I've been thinking up "martial art" manoeuvres for him to perform with a vehicle. One I though of was for when he is piloting a spacecraft with shields. I called it "Full shields to Port!" (the campaign revolves around b-movie actors who have been sent into space with the remnants of humanity and have inadvertently become humanity's leaders ) The idea of the "manoeuvre" is that he somehow quickly dumps all shield power, and then some, to one arc of shields, but this is in addition to the normal shield rating of the vessel. So I started buying some force field to …

I've been thinking of publishing my hard SF campaign. However, I don't have any artwork. Since I can't afford to pay an artist, I'll have to find art that's in the public domain. Unfortunately, hard SF artwork is hard to find. Most SF art is either Pulp SF or space opera. Any suggestions on where to look? Thanks in advance

I'm thinking of building the classic "I've got a brain that can plug into a lot of bodies" sort of cyborg and I'm trying to figure out how to simulate it. Ideas? So far, I'm thinking of a VPP with the limitation of "must be a part of a whole body" concept.

This potential development has uses in other genres (such as a maguffin for a Dark Champions scenario...or as a power source for a hero in Champions...etc) but I suspect that it belongs here. Thus...the posting: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/15/us-lockheed-fusion-idUSKCN0I41EM20141015 (The first three paragraphs of the article follow...) (Reuters) - Lockheed Martin Corp said on Wednesday it had made a technological breakthrough in developing a power source based on nuclear fusion, and the first reactors, small enough to fit on the back of a truck, could be ready for use in a decade. Tom McGuire, who heads the project, said he and a small team had …
