Some time ago I was looking through the Dark Champions book at the modern profession Package Deals, and noticed a glaring omission -- the Astronaut. I thought this was a really interesting career choice for player characters, that could provide a cross-over possibility with Star Hero plots. I did research on Wikipedia and the NASA website, and came up with my own Package Deal. I just noticed it went down with the Vault, and re-uploaded it. Astronaut Package Deal

Science fiction is a work of imagination. It's a speculation on what society may be like in the future. The thing is, I notice how almost all SF shows seem to be a variation on a theme. Most campaigns are filled with aliens both friendly and hostile, blasters, and travel across the galaxy. Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, whatever; it's almost the same thing once you strip it down to basics. And yet, I hear a lot of complaints when I try something different, say, a near-future campaign that has a few advancements in technology, but is otherwise similar to today's society. This is what I've heard: "WAAAAAH! Why is the space military based on the Air Force? That's n…

I have a few questions. I am new to HERO System and hope to form a group to play RPGs with. After some research it HERO System looks to be the closest to what I am looking for for my sci-fi game. I of course am daunted by the amount of work I have to put in to begin a game since I have to build a setting and such from scratch. I am having trouble building some pieces of equipment I wish to put n the equipment tables. I don't understand the scope examples from the HERO System Equipment Guide. I was trying to reverse build the telescopic scope x2. It lists its Active Points Cost at 12, but the table don't describe how the powers are built. It gives hints, but I could no…

Not the best thing I ever wrote, but this is what happened Christmas two years ago in my Terracide campaign. I'm referring to both real time and game time: the game session ran just after Christmas 2011, and the events in game took place on Christmas day, 2311. ...and thus began the Omicron Station Rebellion. It was doomed from the beginning, but it wasn't futile; the rebels of Omicron set the Ridpath Junta back long enough to insure their eventual defeat in the Kruger 60 cluster.

Comet ISON is apparently now visible with binocs and could be visible with the naked eye starting next week. Post here if you've seen it, or are going to see it, or are panicking because it will bring plague and destruction down upon our heads. http://www.space.com/23577-comet-ison-lovejoy-mercury-night-sky.html

I'm going to run a near-future, hard science fiction game. I want to keep things mostly realistic, so while there will be some advancements in technology, they won't be anywhere near the Star Trek level. I think 75 points base + 75 points of disadvantages would be a bit too much for this game. I can do 50 pts. base + 50 pts. disads, but it may be too low a point total. Maybe 60 pts. base + 60 pts. disads will work. The system would be 5th Ed. Skills will be common; powers would only come from items. Combat may or may not be common, depending on what type of characters the players create. Any recommendations?

Recently I stumbeled across an interesting game and I thought I share it. It can be used as a Setting, a set of pointers for timetravel rules and as idea for making games for a Star Hero Settings. Becauase if we can do it now, it should still be possible in the Future. The game is called Achron. And it is 3D Realmtime Startegy game. With time Travel as a major game mechanic. In Multiplayer no less. All thanks to the "Resequence" Engine. Instead of just playing in the "now", you have a timeframe of 7 minutes to play in: 1 minute into the future, 6 minutes into the past. Events that go beyond the 6 minute line becomes "inmutable past". Causality is not instant, in…

I started to create sample characters. I find that skill descriptions in templates are rather confusing. Firstly I wanted to create Spacer/Conman (=Smuggler) combination. In every template there are option at the end of skill list. "Choose one or choose one from list". Cost of that varies in different templates, but in conman template it is 9 points. With that 9 points you can choose one skill (9 points is rather expensive skill) or any perk or any contact. I think that choosing contact is better for 9 points, than paying 9 points from one skill. I am not sure if I understood this one right. Or is it so that if I choose one skills for 9 points, then that skill is …

I just picked up this game on Steam after noticing that it was on sale . . . and I'm glad I did! You can quickly and easily design and fly multi-stage rockets. Take them into orbit, visit the outer planets! What I found especially interesting is the maneuver planning tool, which makes it fairly easy to navigate around the solar system in a Newtonian manner. I heartily recommend it to anyone who likes fun or wants to get a feel for how space travel works.
