A character in my High-Powered Fantasy Hero campaign has 30 COM. I've used it to clarify why PRE attacks tend to result in folks becoming enamored with the character, but are there any other mechanics that might be used with this? Has anybody used a COM roll? If so, for what and how?

I am currently getting people who are GURPS fan into Hero. Their major problem is that HERO has no Active Defense Roll. How would you defend Hero having no such roll? G

How much of a Limitation would you call "Only for calculating Casual STR"...? I'd say -2, because that's the maximum for a Limitation, according to page 194 of FRED... My reasoning: page 92 lists No Figured Characteristics as a -1/2 Limitation... This means that 15 points of STR would cost 10 points, and therefore the ability for that STR to add to Figured Characteristics has a cost of 5... This is a -2 Limitation.... 15 / (1 + 2) = 5... However, I really don't think folks should be able to get 3 PD, 3 REC, and 8 STUN, (which would cost 17 points to buy straight), for a cost of 5 points; so I'm assuming Only For Calculating Casual STR (-2) to be the valid Li…

OK, I'm tweaking my campaign some. I am turning it into a more international game with Warlord as the major villain. In the first session, I introduced one of the character's Hunteds. The Hunted is a super powered Martial Artist and spy (as is the character). Originally, the Hunted was going to be an agent of a hostile government. Now I'm going to add him to the War Machine as an Intel specialist. Originally, I had gone with the fairly generic code name of White Crane. I'd like to change it to something more in keeping with War Machine's theme. I’m not thrilled with any of the ideas that I’ve come up with so far: Art of War Warhawk Fog of War Do …

Everything I've read about the upcoming Revised 5E sounds pretty good to me, but I will add this: One of the things I like most about the current edition is its sturdiness. The thing can take a handling and a beating. I seem to recall reading some time ago that Fred got his hazing by being thrown in a laundry dryer for half an hour or some such. I've never tried that with mine, but it sounds pretty tough, and all I can say is that I've carried the bugger around with me for over about a year and a half now in three different cities across the U.S., in rain, snow and shine and it still looks good. Granted, the cover is nicked up a bit and the whole bottom edge of i…

I'm trying to build a drain body power, and have this so far: Drain BODY 7 1/2d6 (standard effect: 22 points), Cumulative (+1/2), Ranged (+1/2) (150 Active Points); OAF (-1), STR Minimum 10 (STR Min. Cannot Add/Subtract Damage; -1), Real Weapon (-1/4), Beam (-1/4), 32 Recoverable Continuing Charges lasting 1 Extra Phase each (+1) Are the continuing charges and cumulative redundant? How does Standard Effect work with the Cumulative advantage? Its supposed to work like this; you get shot, take the Drain for the current phase and the following phase, up to a max of 22 BODY lost. So, did I do it right? Aroooo

I am trying to figure out how to best model a power that represents a super lock picking/contortionist type skill for my thief character. The basic idea is that she is skilled enough that give a bit of time, she can find some way to get out of most any type of bond, locked room, etc. whether it be by picking a lock, flexing her body in just the right way to wriggle out of the ropes, or whatever. I got the initial idea from the “Super Contortionist†skill listed in Fred as an Desolification example and tweaked it a bit so that it felt more the way I saw it working for my character. 11 No Lock can hold me: Desolidification (affected by any attack) (40 active poi…

A newbie question, but I am curious. Not flamebaiting or trying to start something. I'm simply curious. It seems like it would be a waste of time or just get on your nerves.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but humour me. I was wondering how to build Ant-Man's shrinking gas in HERO. He can shrink himself, he can shrink other people and objects, and he also can do both simultaneously. At first one might think that something like the Usable Simultaneously Advantage would be the ideal answer, but Hank Pym can shrink opponents against their will, so it's Usable as Attack. But I've read that you normally can't use Usable as Attack powers on yourself, and even if the GM'd allow it, I don't think you could shrink both yourself and your enemy in a single Phase. So we'd have to buy two different powers? I was thinking about a Multipower,…

Howdy, folx! Thought I'd seek out the collective wisdom and web-searching powers of Herodom Assembled. For the Expanded Strength Table in The Ultimate Brick, I'd like to have lots of good examples of what things weigh. I have plenty of real-world examples of vehicles (from the HSVS) and for weapons (from various reference books I own), but beyond that I haven't had much luck tracking down a website or reference that would list the weights of lots of everyday objects. Anyone know of any such sites, or have any other handy research tips?

Just wanted to let everyone know that Ben's posted the update to the Rules FAQ. I'm sure the fans who prepare various alternate versions will do so as soon as time and interest allow them to. If you have any questions or comments, please post 'em in the "Company Questions" thread of the same name.

One thing I've considered is modifying the way Body damage is compared to the Body characteristic... Look at the Object Damage tables, and the Standard Effect rules... Twice the Mass gives +1 Body for objects that are otherwise similar, and each 5 points of STR would do +1 Body, as well as doubling what you can lift... Plus, the smallest nonzero amout of Body damage you can take is 1 point, which is 10% of the way to a potentially lethal result for a 10 Body character... There's no way to really batter and bruise someone... Combining these ideas: Track each Wound... It also makes some methods for Healing easier to do this as well... A character wou…

I'm sitting here at work without my book (gasp!) contemplating how to build something in Hero. The Chromat: "... these consist of thousands of color-generating partially organic electronic nodules inserted under the skin in an array that can be as small or large as the recipient desires (or can afford; Venusians with the money to buy full-body chromats seldom have good social reasons to display them in public, anyway). When active, the chromat looks just like a bright (sometimes even glowing) tatoo, but when inactive, the skin is completely normal-looking. Most offices have few restrictions on chromat use but for the sake of courtesy, most Venusians keep their c…

I am trying to write up, in HERO terms, the ability to make potions the same way they are made in the T.V. series Charmed. Since the potions always (well 99.9% of the time) work I am trying to work this as a power rather than a skill but I am not sure what the best way to do this is. What I have come up with so far is this: Transformation (Living demon into Vanquished demon) 1 Charge, Fragile, OAF, Gestures (must be thrown), extra time 1 hour (the time to brew), requires obscure ingredients, AOE 1 hex (the potions are usually thrown at the ground near the demon rather than directly on them), reduced range (equal to the users throwing range) How many dice…

This had come up in discussion with my group ... figured I'd post it here for some critique ... whatcha think? Bike Fu Bike Fu is the art of melee combat while riding a motorcycle. A staple in Hong Kong cinema and anime, the bike fu master is able to use his motorcycle as an extension of his own body, allowing him to use various maneuvers to perform remarkable combat maneuvers. Characters may also use this style with blunt weapons or a sword (such as a katana). ----------------- Bike Fu Used with motorcycle; Vehicular Weapon Element is free Maneuver Ph Pt OCVDCV Damage/Effect Lancing ½ 4 +1 -1 STR + v/5; Target Falls…

Looking for ideas to speed up combat by simplifying rules. We are an experienced group, all good RPers, no one at risk of abusing changes or finding loopholes. Some rules experts, some rules-lite, all many years with system. First considerations: We conclude that much of the slowness in combat comes from waiting for ones phase to come around. So, lose SPD chart - 1 action per phase, 6 phases per turn. (Tantamount to everyone buying a 6 SPD). No SPD accounting, no one waits on the sidelines for their phase. END, while a good thing to factor, seems to take more accounting than it warrants. Many systems don't even account for it. What about eliminating it? …

I'm sure this has come up before, but how would you guys handle density decrease? I looked at all the effects of weight change, ignored the STR and DEF effects and figured the most straightforward way would be to use Leaping with a proportional Knockback Resistance Drain Side-Effect, with lowered weight being the special effect. Leaping 10" (10) Minor Side Effect: +1" KB per point of Leap (-1/2) Real Cost: 7 - Character can drop weight to 1/1,000th of original (about 200grams) If I wanted to use it on others, I'd probably change the power around. Drain KB Resistance 2D6 (20) + Linked (-1/2) with Aid Leap 1D6 (10) proportional to Drain (-0) = 27 Real P…

Here is something that I do not understand completely in the Hero System, even after playing it for years. I have my own way of handling it, but I would like some other opinions, or perhaps the actual Rules, that I seem to have missed along the way. (Forgive me if this looks like a "word problem" from 5th Grade Math, but I am trying to make it as clear as possible.) Character A and Character B are 10 hexes apart. Both Character A and Character B have a SPD of 4. Character A has a DEX of 28. Character A has 20" of Flight. Character B has a DEX of 23. It is now Segment 3. Character A goes first. "I want to perform a Move Through on Chara…

So last night, Ogre's trying to demolish a building. I hit him with a BOECV Entangle with all the usual bells and whistles, and he's stopped in his tracks. His puny EGO prevents him from overcoming the Entangle's 4 BODY and breaking loose before the authorities can see to him. Yes, yes, it was undeniably clever (and really my only option, since he'd just knocked me out by throwing me through a door, a car, and a fruit stand), but it got me to thinking. Can he ever get out of this? Barring GM fiat, plot device, or some other deus ex machina, can the weak-willed ever break free of a BOECV Entangle?

For powers that damage the environment when used, such as ripping cabling out of walls for entangles, or destroying the terrain for earth based powers, I understand the use of side-effects if the results are a disadvantage. For characters for which such side-effects are advantages, how do you create powers that attack the environment to create components (such as metal fragments, loose earth, etc) for a simultaneous attack on another character (energy blast, entagle, etc)? Would the character just have to take two phases to complete the two actions (attacking the environment for parts to be used in the second attack)? Thank you for your help.

I'm interested in seeing any Jedi characters sheets that people have come up with. I'm trying to make one and would like to get input on how other people have done it. I plan on making 3 types along the lines of the 3 classes from the d20 Star Wars game, Guardian, Sentinel and Consular. Lets see what ya got people.
