OK, so Im reading this series, something called The Anita Blake series or something like that. Its a vampire series, and its not bad if anyone is interested. But last night as I was reading I read a power that I cant figure out how to do. How do you remove someones pain in Hero? Not healing STUN or Body, as thats easy. This wouldnt heal anything. You would just remove someones pain so they dont feel it. Would this be a Transform? But its not really a Transformation of any kind. Youre basically touching someone and taking their pain away. Anyone know of a way to do this? Danke. -=Grim=-

I have decided to build a character based around the rapid acceleration abilities on flight. I like the idea of a character that can go from complete stop to complete acceleration in a heartbeat. The flight is easy and the vast majority of his powers are easy (Multipower with objects of opportunity that he can accelerate and slam into targets via UNTIL Powers). The one power I haven't figured out how to do is the acceleration of opponents. 1. Flight, Useable on Others, Useable as an attack, Straight Line Only? What disadvantage would you give if the flight were only in a straight line? 2. TK, Affects Whole Object. Would you give it Only to Push? I want to …

Projection

Simple question about the concept of projecting ones self out of their body into the Dreamscape. Is this better done with Extra Dimensional Movement, or with Duplication? I only mention the latter because FREd has an example power called "astral projection" built with Duplication, and EDM has no obvious mechanic for leaving a body behind. To clarify, the projected mind cannot move about the physical world, only the Dreamscape.

There used to be a couple of online HERO dice generators (ones you didn't have to install on your PC). Anyone know where they are?

Hi, I'm very new to Hero. I've only made my way through the characteristic chapter so far. It's pretty daunting stuff. I have a quick question and I was wondering if someone could help me. A characteristic roll is based on (9+characteristic/5). Now, is there anyway to be good as basic characteristic tasks without increasing your characteristics to really high levels? The problem I see is that characteristic checks use the same difficulty modifiers as skills even though they will be consistently lower. What I'm trying to say is this. The strongest human should be just as good at being strong as the best human doctor is at being a doctor. Do you see …

Hey all. I know there are some websites out there with guidelines regarding character concept. I'd love a list of questions I could hand my players so they can think of their characters. Does anyone know of a website/resource that fits this description? Thanks.

On p.30 (FREd) there's a table of all the skill discussed in FREd. There's a column that says Base/+1 Cost. What does the +1 Cost mean? Usually, the base is 3 while the +1 Cost is 2 points. Could someone explain this to me? Thanks! (*note: the reason I didn't want to ask Steve this is because you guys can probably help me out and Steve doesn't need anything else on his plate)

I'm no expert on hero, wouldn't even call myself a novice yet, but in reading the boards, I've seen a LOT of questions that can be answered with a little common sense. Unfortunately, common sense is the first thing to disappear when a rules dispute arises. That said, here's some simple solutions to try before you go asking for help: 1. Throw out the rules. If the players and GM can agree on something, the rules aren't neccesary. Rules exist solely for conflict resolution. 2. Is it neccesary? Do you REALLY need to work out the mechanics of a [insert name of item here]? See idea 1 3. negotiate with the players/gm Same general ide…

Question on Combat Skill Levels. Let's say I buy the 3 point cost for all combat skills with, say, Martial Arts. Could I throw the skill level into DCV when I use the martial manuever? Or could I only have it in DCV if I'm being *attacked* by a Martial Manuver? I think it's the latter...but having a little trouble rubbing the sleep from my brain.

I'm creating a blind pre-teen who's just developing his psychic powers. He's an ESPer with a talent for precognition. I want one of his "tricks" to be the ability to dodge nearly any attack leveled against him, but still have trouble navigating an unfamiliar room. Mechanically, I don't want him to have any targeting senses, but I still want him to maintain full DCV (plus dodge bonuses) in combat without the need for making Skill Rolls. Any ideas on how I should approach this?

You know, one thing I've found about this discussion board is that it really stretches my envelope on how the Hero rules really can be used to create pretty much any type of effect. When I used to create Champions characters (back in the 80's) I would have a bit of an idea of an architype I'd like to create, then I'd skim through the book looking for what powers matched. Kindof a bottom-up way of creating characters which never really let me realize the full potential of the types of powers and effects I could create when making a character. I now try to emply more of a top-down approach where I come up with exactly what I want the character to do before even looki…

A friend asked me to post this..he's at work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Could you do me a favor as long as you're posting on the HERO boards? I'm curious how people would build a plant-killing aura. Wherever the character walks, grass browns at her feet, flowers whither from her touch, dinner salads turn to dust on her fork.... I'm thinking it should probably be a Distinctive Feature or Social Limitation. However, I want plants to really take game-mechanical damage -- so, let's say she were fighting Poison Ivy and she was hit with a plant Entangle, the Entangle would quickly die. Should it …

If you buy a characteristic up past NCM (so, for instance, buying speed up from 4 to 5) as a base adding, it costs twice, 20 for the speed increase. But if you buy it as a power, say, through a focus or costs end or something, does it only cost a base of 10 then?

I'm trying to build a power that lets the character, given time, teleport any one desired object to his location. If you're familiar with Amber, the idea is a lot like Logrus. He can go searching for, say, a pizza, but he has no control over the toppings. Or he could search for a compact car and end up with a Yugo. So if he were in jail and needed the key, he could indeed teleport a key to himself, but considering how many keys there are in the world, it's not bound to be the right key. I've built it as a Major Transform: Air into Anything, with a Detect: Desired Objects (Megascale, 1" = 1,000 km) used to find the object(s) in question, but it feels a little clun…

Thump!
by Dust Raven- 15 replies

I have a player that wants his character to have a "thump" ability. That is, to thump a mechanical device that isn't working, and have it suddenly work. I was originally think Mind Control, but now I'm thinking Healing. Healing would better represent "fixing" something a bit better. Here's what I got: Thump!: Healing Machines/Gadgets 1d6, Any Mechanical/Gadget SFX, One Power At A Time (+1/4), Reduced Endurance (0 END, +1/2) (17 Active Points), Gestures (-1/4) Total Cost: 14.

This is sorta along the lines of the summoned sword. Basicly is this legal the way its constructed. And yes its probably rule raping i admit. But its supposed to be a Psionic Crossbow. But could made magic with Incantation Gestures and spell for a nother savings on the summom power of 5 points. 13 Summon Psionic Crossbow: Summon 169-point crossbow, Slavishly Devoted (+1) (68 Active Points); Increased Endurance Cost (x5 END; -2), Concentration (0 DCV; Character is totally unaware of nearby events; -3/4), Extra Time (Full Phase, Character May Take No Other Actions, -3/4), Requires A Skill Roll (-1/2) Psionic Crossbow : Killing Attack - Ranged 2d6-1, 64 …

I'm looking for suggestions for these two powers in Hero System terms. 1 Stopping Time. The character can stop time while he can move about normally. He can affect the time stopped objects normally, moving and even harming them if he so desires. 2. A force field that stops an entire attack, but weakens proportionally to the size of the attack, meaning a large enough attack can collaspe it all together. It would slowly regenate "energy" over time. Ex:The feild has 30 points of Def. Its hit for 15 body. The FF will stop 15 more points of damage before collasping.

I'm curious as to how any of you might construct a power designed to "Take your soul" in a very literal sense. The campaign in question has established that the subconcious is not only a place you can visit in a metaphysical sense but in a physical sense as well - it's a kind of dimension, after a fashion. (Also, of note, the campaign in question is psychotic, intense, emotionally charged, mature and a really good game..) back to questions.. Certain powerful beings (and one of the PCs due to the medling of aforementioned powerful beings and the GM underestimating what the player/character would do) can literally take all, or some, of your soul and "store" it in their…
