Don't know exactly where to post this, but... I was curious about reading the Superhero Showdown fiction that was written up (curious to see how things might go, tactically speaking)... but I haven't a clue where they are located.

Hi all! First post to the board here, so I don't know if similar questions have come up before... I'm trying to design something that is relatively stumping me. The first is a gun that would fire a pellet or cannister that would quick-freeze a target (liquid nitrogen, or something like it), followed immediately by something that would heat the target up (magnesium, or something like it). Both charges would be considered 1 attack from the same weapon. There'd be the damage from the freeze & heat, but more importantly violent reaction you'd get by changing something's temperature so rapidly and extremely. Obviously there are EBs, but I'm trying to also model the str…

I have a power, it costs endurace, I want to use it as many times a day as I want, however I want the power to last for a duration. Using continuing charges does not work since the number of charges limits they number of time I can use the power. Any suggestions?

I've finally decided to take another shot (with the help of you guys) at writing up Kolava (see picture at left) in Hero. On the surface he isn't that hard; Martial Artist with a bit of Mentalist and a very "Batman" skill-heavy undertone. The hard part is his bandanna, which defines the single largest aspect of his being. See, Kolava is actually an animal. A mundane, mostly skilless, and completely "power"less animal. When he puts on his trusty blue bandanna, however, he is rocking with the best of them--but don't jump to conclusions, this is still a difficult build, because the bandanna is not merely a green-lantern sort of power generator. It is a mental capacitor…

I am not sure if this is the rite place for this one but. Have any of you made an export template for Hero Designer that has less anfasis on the game mechanic cost of powers. Say something that just showes the powers, chaaraceristics and skiklls with out the cost. (could still have the cost in each section just not four columbs for each stat and three numbers for each power. I ask because I feel it cheepens the characters a little.

Hi Steve! I am new to the boards so I apologise now if something like this has already come up. I am creating a new character for a CHAMPIONS [TM] game and am having a few problems with the mechanics for my conceived powers. My hero uses molecular manipulation/re-arrangement powers; now the problem is he works at a museum as an artifacts restorer, using his powers to rebuild objects at an atomic level. He can not create new items, only restore old/broken ones. Now the question is: Would the power be built as a Transform and at what level (minor, major, etc)? What sort of Advantages or Limitations would apply? Or could the power be built as Cha…

Hi, I about a third of the way through Sidekick and I have a few questions about the rules. I know you guys can help so I decided not to bother Steve with them. 1. When you drain someone's DEX, you affect their CVs, right? When you drain their STR, you affect how much they lift their DC, ect., correct? It's just figured characteristics (PD, ED, REC, ect.) that don't get affected. 2. When using a constant power, do you pay END each segment that it's on, or only on the segments when you get to act? The text reads like it should be the latter, but that's kind of weird since faster characters would have to spend more END. 3. A character's ability to ju…

How much would you value an extremely low rate of fire as a limitation? For example the main gun on a tank typically fires 5 rounds per minute with a trained crew for about 5 minutes before they get tired, then it degrades to around 3 rounds per minute. In effect I was thinking of a limitation as follows: "Only on Segment 12 for first 5 turns, then only on segment 12 every other turn. 5 minutes of rest to return to normal rate of Fire" I think this is worth about -2. My reason for this level of limitation is an activation roll of 8- is also -2 and thats about equivalent for something that operates at SPD 3. Though a Full Turn activation is worth -1 1/4 …

I'm sure this has been discussed before but it seems to me that OCV and DCV could be replaced with various combat skills. This would require opposed skill rolls for combat with the best margin of success winning the round. There are already catagories of WF's. Allow them to be purchased as DEX based Combat Skills. The use of skill levels, martial mods, and situational mods really wouldn't change they would modify the skill roll vs modifying OCV or DCV. The base skill roll would be used in offence or defence and modified just as OCV and DCV are now. Why make this change? The DEX /3 is only used for OCV and DCV (and ECV). The combat roll s…

So the other thread got me thinking, but I didn't want to put up a poll. Just wondering, wanted to hear comments - how do you design NPCs? I try to think of some portion that will be interesting enough to recur, and a portion that don't need to but should be interesting in ways you don't want to see them again. For me the hook is more important, whether it's personality or powers. The next step, generally, is the NPC's longevity and what role, long-term, he'll want to be like, if I'm designing a villain. Then finally the kinds of teams he'll be in. For the non-villains, it's less methodical (not that the above is done that methodically though it tends to work ou…

Hey all, Looking for some feedback that has come up in my game: 1) Missle Reflection. I had a player ask if he could deflect an energy attack if he were in its path....even though he wasn't in the target hex or an adjacent hex. Basically, bad guy targeted good guy 8 hexes away and the Missle Reflector was right in between. For the record, the Reflector has the can reflect in adjacent hexes advantage, but not at range. I wasn't sure whether to allow this or not. Technically, he'd probaby need the At Range advantage to reflect from his position, but logically....it seemed odd that he couldn't. Should I have let him attempt the reflect? 2) How do you do the "t…

There are conditional limitations on powers, the Only If and the Never If. An example of an Only If limitation is Only at Night, or Only in High Magnetic Fields. Examples of Never If limitations are Never in Thunderstorms, etc. What about Always When? Consider the Lycanthrope - he ALWAYS turns into a werewolf on the full moon. That can be resolved as an accidental change. Let's try something else. Consider the Bore. The Bore is one of Earth's mightiest heroes, but the sound of his voice is enough to render anyone catatonic. Its a Suppress Intelligence, Always When talking. Not only when, or incantations - there's nothing this guy can say that isn't well n…

If you purchase a type of Major Transform with flexibility ( anything to anything, for arguments sake ), and choose to perform a type of Transform that is less than Major, do you roll the number of dice for a Major Transform still, or can you roll your active points in the appropriate type of Transform??

I'm trying to build a characte with a teleportation platform. He can teleport to the platform from anywhere in the world, and he can teleport from the platform to most anywhere on the planet. There are a few things I'm running into trouble with this Multipower: "Teleport Anywhere" uses the base's sensor suite to determine locations (Clairsentience, with some major limitations - esssentially "spy satelite cam"). "Teleport Home" is obviously Fixed Location Only. The platform itself is an Obvious Inaccessible Immobile Focus, but this is only easily applied to "Teleport Out." The character doesn't need to have the platform present to Teleport home, but he …

I'm a Hero newbie who's coming to really love the system. I haven't yet used it in play, because I really want to get the hang of it before going 'live'. I'm not really interested in Superhero gaming - my tastes run to fantasy, SF and modern gaming. But I see a lot of talk on these boards regarding Supers tactics - different ways for Bricks, Speedsters and Mentalists to act, for example - which seem to have some bearing on how Hero fits together as a system. I already have a fair pool of Hero books - FH, FH Grimoire, Bestiary, Ultimate Vehicles, Star Hero, Terran Empire, Spacers' Toolkit - together with Hero Designer, and I've been playing a fair bit with t…

About a year ago, I purchased a copy of FREd. In between work and classes I struggled my way through a third of it. Why the core of the system didn't seem that complex to me, the number of options was staggering. I eventually gave up and traded off my copy. I always regretted that. I recognized the potential of Hero, I just couldn't get into it. I wished there was an easier way to grok the system and I couldn't find any local groups to teach me. The other day I bought Sidekick. I'll tell you, this is exactly what Hero needed. Everything is so clear and concise. As I read through the book I find I'm spending more time thinking about all of the cool charac…

Do any of you have or use any modified rules for damaging/breaking objects? I find that the current rules have some realism flaws: 1) Why should all inanimate objects have Resistant DEF? Yes, hard things such as brick walls and metal armor should, but you can stretch out a piece of rope and let elephants trample it and it won't break, but you can cut it easily with a 1 pip HKA pocket knife. Therefore, I say soft, flexible items should have non-resistant defenses. Using the 3 to 1 DEF rule for automatons which take no STUN, just multiply the object's DEF by 3, but say that it's non-resistant. In TUV, there is a klunky construct about ship's sails - even thoug…

One of my players is building a new character for our "Exiles" campaign that I am unsure how to build a portion of his powers. Not that this campaign isn't staged only in offshots of the Marvel universe, but the campaign can go to any universe including DC, Image, Amalagam, whatever I feel like. The player wants to play Batman. I know it doesn't sound original, but the origin goes all wonky. Bruce Wayne's parents weren't killed when he was a little kid as his parents chose to go to the birthday party of Lex Luthor that was held at a farm in Smallville on the same fateful day that the green meteor swarmed landed. When his parents were killed while he was in college…

Well it’s a question more that a statement. This probably belongs in the Fantasy section but since the same could be said in any Heroic setting that uses melee weapons I figured I would put it here. Any way a bastered sword or battle axe do damage equivalent to most 2 handed weapons and allows a person to use a shield and for a +2 or +3 DCV bonus. I have only one person in my current campaign that uses a 2handed weapon and that is because they are fluff oriented. Especially since with his strength he could be wielding a one handed weapon and only loose a single DC. Has any one else noticed this or am I reading to much in to it. I was thinking about razing the DC a…

I like Hero. I don't think its a perfect system or anything like that, but I feel its a damn good one thats stood up to the test of time. So why is there such hate directed at it online? I see it attacked with a frequency that seems to rival d20 hate. People actually go out of their way to slam Hero, sometimes to a truly ludicrous extreme.

Someone help me out here. What's the final cost on the following VPP: 80 point pool +1 Zero-Phase Change +1 No Skill Roll -1 1/2 total limitations on the pool, but not the powers. I'm assuming Hero Designer is correct when it tells me that the final cost is 128 character points. I'd just like to know how it's getting there. Am I misunderstanding something about how to figure the cost?

Having played in games where the villians always teleports away to safety, I wanted to develop a tracking ability with my own teleportation. I was thinking about Detect Teleportation, Tracking Sense, 360 perception, Mega Scale. Would that work? Would I need to buy "No range modifier" so I could see them that far away?
