Right now my copy of The Ultimate Mentalist is in a box at the bottom of a pile of stuff (which shouldn't be on top of said box, but that's another story), or I'd look this up myself.... What's the value for a Mental Power with Based On Presence Combat Value? I can't even remember right now whether it's listed as an Advantage or a Limitation. In case it makes a difference, it's for a heroic-level (Terran Empire) ability.

I've been chipping away at 'Pacifist Fu', a martial art for a character who has taken an oath of non-violence. I really need to get martial hero. Soon. I had some questions. Cost Maneuver OCV DCV Notes 4 Block +2 +2 Block, Abort 4 Dodge -1 +1 Dodge All Attacks, Abort 4 Disarm 0 +5 Disarm, +10 Str 4 Escape 0 0 +15 Str vs. Grabs 4 Hold -1 -1 +10 Str for Holding On Acrobatics Breakfall Stealth Combat Luck I wanted a few other things in it that I don't know how to build. For example, I wanted a "Fakeout" maneuver. It would fool anyone into thinking he was throwing a punch, causing them (hopefully) to act defensively. I was thinking Mental Illusions (even d…

Something's been bothering me about Combat Skill Levels with DCV defined as coming from a character's small size, and yesterday I finally put my finger on what it was. Shouldn't such DCV levels have the Inherent Advantage? I mean, they're active all the time (even when the character is sleeping -- or dead), and they can't be Drained or taken away by any other means.... (I would have posted this in the rules question section, but technically this isn't a rules question; since it would've been moved to this section without a real answer anyway, I'm posting it here. While I understand the reasons for the "move without really answering" policy without needing to ha…

Okay, math wonks, I've got a problem I need solved. In my game I frequently have lots of opponents attacking a couple of PCs. I want to speed up combat by rolling for several bad guys with one To Hit roll. Specifically I want to make one To Hit roll for a group of five (identical) opponents. So let's say each bad guy has an 11-less chance to hit. If I were to roll 3d6 five times, what are the odds that all 5 would hit (rather small)? What are the odds that 4 out of 5 would hit (less small)? And so on, up to the odds that 1 will hit (greater than an 11-less chance)? Ideally I'd like to make a table with "Base To-Hit Roll" across the top, "Chance For [1,2,3,4…

This was originally inspired by a "popular mutant superhero film." (Everyone seems to be careful about stepping on trademarks.) Specifically, the scene where an "amphibious" villain-type slimes the telekinetic woman in the eyes, effectively blinding her until her energy-projecting boyfriend blasts off the hardened slime. That to me would look like an Entangle of, let's say, 5D6 (50) with the adder Stops Sight Group (+10). Easy enough, except that save for the blinding, TK woman is completely unrestricted in her movement. Considering it's a -1 Limitation for Allows Accessible Focus use OR Hands/Feet Only, I figure that for Does Not Restrict Movement At All could a…

Tango & Cash? No, Entangle & Flash. I figured I'd start a fresh thread on this idea. The first one "Mobility as Adder" largely covered the concept of altering the basic nature of Entangle so that immobilization was optional instead of inherent. This allowed for the creation of an Entangle that wouldn't restrict mobility but would be used to solely block senses without having to come up with a limitation to remove the immobilization factor. The suggested power might look something like: Sensory Deprivation Entangle: creates DEF/Body barrier to Senses as per standard Entangle (1D6/Level). 10 per level of Targeting Sense, 5 per Non. There were ple…

You probably get this question a lot, but I wanted to ask you since I would think you'd have a better idea on how much this potentially unbalancing Advantage is. How much should an Advantage or Adder cost to Desolidification to make it able to affect even ECV powers and gases (not senses, "Immunity" to senses would be Invisibility). I'm wondering because I have an NPC here that doesn't have a mind, so he'd be kinda "unhurtable" to pretty much any ECV attack. Since I'm using Desolid anyway to represent his immunity to most diseases (he's an inorganic life form), I think I could just add the Advantage and broaden the Disadvantage slightly. (Although I could use Life S…

Is it allowed to buy off a Disadvantage and apply a Limitation to the cost? Such as in my Kekko Kamen write up when I "brought off" her Susceptibility to the sight of muscular guys with a focus limitation and Nuiscance effect? Or is that just a house rule of mine I've mixed up with an offical ruling?

Currently, one can use autofire to either gain potential extra hits against a target or to fire against multiple targets. However, it seems that one should also be able to use an autofire spray as a way to increase the likelihood of hitting. How would you model this?? My inclination: +1 OCV bonus per extra shot spent on accuracy ( meaning that said shot cannot be an extra hit ).

Here's one for you guys. I've got a character whose power is based on her ability to alter the refractive index of any area, allowing her to manipulate but not generate light. (My tendency with character creation is to make a near-normal character with a twist and see what happens.) One of her more passive powers is the ability to bend light so that she can see around corners. She can combine this with power-based "lenses" so that she can see easily over great distances. I thought the best way to define this would be with Clairsentience with a LOS advantage, so she could place an ob point at a corner within view, say, and look around it. I'd like her to …

When using Flight (only along surfaces -1/2), can you stop in place on a vertical or overhanging surface, or does this require clinging?

I cant seem to find an answer to this one, maybe somebody here can help. (A vs. B for example) A uses an END. drain on B that would suck B to -12 END. Now would B take stun damage from losing this END( as in using END that you do not have available), does -12 END =6d6 of NND stun damage? Please let me know if this example is not clear enough for a proper answer.

I was trying to write up a character with "wired reflexes" the other day, which granted, among other things, +3 SPD when active. My first instinct was to use the "Succor" option for the Aid power, since it's specifically designed for such things. I was a little surprised to find out that I was paying MORE points for SPD that I couldn't always use, and that cost END, than if I had just purchased the SPD straight. I wound up writing it as +3 SPD, non-persistant, costs END. Does that sound reasonable? or was I doing something wrong with the Succor? Zeropoint

For the DH subscribers out there who are interested in playtesting The Turakian Age, the file is now up. One note: I listed the deadline as April 12. I have to change that to April 5; we're trying to move quicker than normal on this one. If you have any questions, please post 'em in the "Company Questions" thread of the same name.

Howdy, folx! Just wanted to let you know that we've posted something new on the "Free Stuff" page. It's a two-page Combat Summary containing a whole bunch of the basic rules for HERO System combat. It was something I whipped up for Sidekick, but ended up not having room for. So, we thought we'd make it freely available to anyone who'd like a copy. Enjoy!

I made a small tool to calculate some statistics on the question: "Should I rather block or dodge?" Download Tool Retaliation: This is just the chance that the defender would hit the attacker, so you're not missing something As far as it looks dodging is (still) much better than blocking, especially if your foe has low OCV and/or you have high DCV. I did a 1d20 Attack Roll too (as we are using that to counter the "everyone has 7 ocv/dcv and hits everyone on 11-" because having less is catastrophic and having more is not permitted). There might be a delphi runtime needed, tell me if you're missing some files... Simple first conclusion: Blocking s…

Strong Guy is a brick, with his Strength at the campaign max (50). His leaping enables him to leap tall buildings in a single bound. One day, after a bout of building bounding, Strong Guy notices a powerful locomotive, hurtling out of control down the tracks, towards a stalled bus on the Rail Road crossing, loaded with crying nuns, screaming orphans, and a few puppies. Strong Guy leaps (naturally) into action. He can't possibly get to the bus in time - he isn't faster than a speeding bullet or anything. He jumps on to the side of the train, smashes through the wall (Tunnelling, 16 def, 1", only to smash through walls), grabs a hold of the engine's massive frame, …

This whole concept brings up some weird situations that I'm not sure how to deal with. Examples: 1) Everyone holds their actions(the heroes get paranoid after seeing the villans do it). Now what? It's the end of the phase....who goes? 2) DEX 24 bad guy and two DEX 23 heroes hold their actions. Bad guy then charges them at the end of the phase. Heroes want to do offensive action to intercept him(like punch him when he gets close). What wins here? Bad guy's DEX gives him initiative? 3) On a related note, if two characters have the same DEX, like one bad guy and one good guy, can they disrupt each other. For example, bad guy A decides to move through good guy …

Ignore the title, I was just thinking about the movie and the book at the same time. Anyway, everyone knows you aren't supposed to model size with persistant inherent growth or shrinking. My question is: Why not? No solid reason is ever given for steering you away from this logical course of action, other then the fear that all large characters will be too similar(?) If the powers are balanced when used as size changing abilities, what could possibly make them suddenly unbalanced when made long-term and given different SFX? I would have asked Steve, but he would say "Since this is a design philosophy question and not a rules question, I'm moving it" so I won't …

Was watching Kim Possible the other day. Wade had decided he needed some field exprerence, so had built a remotely operated drone. Got to wondering how you would do this in Champions, a character like the original Box from Omega Flight before he became just another powered armor character. Obviously, duplication is the main power, with mind link between the duplicates. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Anyone ever make a character like this?

I have Sidekick right now and am going to get the corebook. Sidekick describes the default size of a character as being 2m and 100kg I think. Now, I know you don't use growth or shrinking to model creatures who are smaller and larger than normal, so how do you do it? Does FREd and/or the bestiary have guidelines for buidling creatures of various sizes? Thanks, Nick

Hi Hero People Here is the thing : a character has plain and simple duplication (4 duplicates all identical ). The player wants to buy additional SPD with the limitation that only ONE duplicate at a time can use the added phases. but at any phase, the player can choose which duplicate will use it. Example Mr Multiple (SPD 4) can have up to 4 duplicates. He has 4 additional SPD (for a total of 8) thus all duplicates can act on phases 3 6 9 12 but only one of them (to choose at this moment) can act on phases 2 5 8 11 Your opinion Hero Dom ? Second question from the same player : if you had duplication with the limitation t…
