Do any of you choose actors for prominent NPC’s or do your players choose actors to portray their characters? This is common in my group (where no one has any appreciable artistic talent). I was wondering if we were the only freaks who do that. Some of the ones that have popped up are: Vin Diesil (more than once) Tommy Lee Jones Patrick Warburton (from the short-lived live action Tick) Christopher Lee Seth Green David Hasselhoff Kurt Russel Sean Connery (old and young) Catherine Bell (JAG) Joe Peschi Most recently our Alternity Hero group was chasing down a powerful mentalist played by Christopher Walken (btw, my Walken impressio…

How do you put a Missile Deflection & Reflection Power into an Elemental Control ? Does it need the Costs Endurance Limitation ? May the "Costs Endurance Only To Activate" Limitation suffice ? Otherwise, may a custom "Costs Endurance Per Use" Limitation be used? The ordinary "Costs Endurance" every phase of maintaining the power Limitation seems too expensive for a Constant Power that in some ways works just like an Attack/Instant Power.

Hey, if someone wanted to have a limitation on Telekinesis that it was used only to hold a really huge thing structurely together when superhuman strength picks it up, what limitation rating would you give it (i.e. when the Gladiator picked up the Baxtor Building in the Fantastic 4 comic)?

How would (or has) anyone built the ability to Leap, "bounce" off one or more objects in the flight path, and change direction? I've considered Flight with a limitation such as Must Start, End and Change Direction in Contact with a Surface, but I'm not sure you can change hex facings more than once per hex via Skill Levels in Flight. Even so, that option would require a lot of skill levels, especially when getting into longer distances. Any suggestions out there? Thanks, J

Power vs Power

One thing, and one of the only things that I was dissapointed about after having finished FREd was the lack of mechanic for power vs power situations. The system is supposed to represent comics, movies, and television, yet where are we without this classic? I'm reffering to the situation in which two character's energy blasts meet in mid air, and immediately halt in order to attempt to destroy the other. Of course, the characters are still in the firing position and likely continuing to channel effort into it. It's a scenario that often results in fairly long (read: more then a phase) face-offs, often accompanied by dialouge and ending with a passionate character (th…

I'm sure I recall there's a Force Wall impermeable to air adder somewhere, though I forget where. What about an Entangle which prevents the target from breathing? If you can point me in the right direction, I expect I'll find it eventually. Thanks Hugh

Watching Frighteners got me thinking of this ability that Michael J. Fox's character has: being able to see the dead. How would you describe it in game terms? Would you do some form of Enhanced Senses or some heavily limited and modified form of Clairsentience? The effect I'm looking for is being able to see and hear dead people, like Fox does or the kid in Sixth Sense...

Hey there, I was working on a utility belt and decided that I wanted to have a floatation device just in case the hero got stuck in an ocean or some such ... how would someone build one of these? Would it be swimming? Or an odd form of TK? I was thinking it might be something like: swimming 10" (OAF: Floatation Device (-1), Only to Float (-1/2), O END (+1/2)) 10/5

I've seen this disadvantage somewhere, either in older writeups or newer ones. I believe the idea is that it's the opposite pair of Hunted -- you take up enough of your time hunting someone that it's worth points. It popped into my mind because I believe it would be appropriate to give to Ace (of the Protectors) targetting Oamen (one of the PC's) after the last session. Has an explanation for this disadvantage been printed somewhere that I either don't have access to (like Digital HERO or pre-4th Edition material), or (more likely) just overlooked? Assuming the answer is no... 1> For the purposes of the 50-point disadvantage category cap, what category…

To take a Side Effect limitation at -1 you have to have a 60-pt effect that harms you, you get no defenses, and you are supposed to recover at a rate like you're healing BODY. IDHMBIFOM, so that's from memory - and yeah, there are other type of SE (e.g. disadvantages), but this is the main type. 1. Why is it supposed to take so long? Healing BODY can take months! A -1 limitation that not only affects you for the duration of a battle, but all other battles for a Freaking long time? And it's only -1? Heaven forbid you use a power with SE twice a month! One Charge is -2, cost 0 END, and can be used the next battle, day, or some such. That's tons better, and doesn't hurt…

Have any of you ever found the rules in the Bestiary to be too cumbersome for this? If so, are there any custom rules out there which function more within the boundaries of the FREd rules? Entangle, in some form or another, seems to be the best choice, but would need creative limitations to work.

What would you say the most difficult systems are to convert into Hero? In order of difficulty... D20 Just so different in form and function Exalted:Alot of the setting is hardwired into the mechanics (Virtues, etc) and just don't exist in Hero. Many many absolute effects (Perfect Defenses, etc). Aberrant:Mainly because so few character actually have stats and Mega Attributes directly converted lead to some outrageous characters (Dex 40+, etc).

What kind and degree of resistant defense powers do you deem a character should have to be effectively immune to hand-held mundane modern weapons, like, surely, assault rifles, submachine guns and grenades, possibly flamethrowers, machine guns, and bazooka/SAMs ? The level where a character may walk through a SWAT or Special Forces squad/team shooting like hell and laugh at puny normals. Trying to understand the threshold where the "above the law" feel kicks in, in Hero terms.

The Shape Shift power has "Costs END Only To Change Shape (+1/4)" advantage on pg. 140. This raises three Questions. 1. Does it cost END to resume one's normal form? 2. Does the character return to normal form when unconcious? 3. If the answer to question two is yes (as I suspect it is) can the character add the Persistant (+1/2) to stay in his shifted form when unconcious or does he have to buy the power down to 0 END (+1/2) instead of Costs END Only To Change Shape? Also, I saw something about a 5E Revised Edition coming out. When is it coming out and will it be mainly typo corrections?

Here is my idea for simulating a military squad. What do you think? Disadvantages on soldiers: 10 points; Shaken Morale : If under fire, test EGO, on fail character becomes shaken and is 1/2 OCV (Frequently, Slightly Impairing) 15 points; Broken Morale: If Shaken and under fire, test EGO, on fail character becomes Broken and is 0 OCV (Frequently, Greatly Impairing) Is FREQUENTLY too strong? 20 points; Routed: If Broken and under fire, test EGO, on fail character becomes Routed and must move away from enemies and into total cover at Non-combat speed. If unable to find a safe path, character surrenders. (Frequently, Fully Impairing) Same question as …

Hi All!!!! I want to run this power I am trying to create by you guys. I ran it by my husband, who we refer to as the walking champs book and he wasn't too sure. The power I would like to create is the ability to age things, either older or younger. Right now I am thinking maybe it only affects non-living things. The extent of this would be he would be able to age a piece of paper until it was so old it would turn to dust. On the flip side, he would also be able to de-age something back to original condition. What I have so far is this would be a major transfomartion, with the advantage continous. The questions I have: Should anything else be add…

Alright, Ive said that I play 4th ed (until revised comes out), so 5th may answer this question for me. But I have no way of knowing, so Ill ask you all. I want to create a Mind Control that causes despair. It wont make you lay down and cry, but you wont fight as effectively and your morale drops. Now, do you suppose that its fair that for every 10 or 15 pts of MC you get a -1 to OCV, DCV and ECV? Or is that too powerful. I dont see any way to apply penalties with MC in the book. But I sometimes read past things (I blame my meds), so the answer might be there and Im just retarded. Is this fair? Or is there a better way to do this? The Drain route is way too…

I got lucky at work tonight and had enough time to get board and think about a nifty cool brick trick. The trouble is, the best way I can figure how to write it up seems a bit unbalanced. Toss 'em into orbit!: Flight 10" MegaScale (1"=1km, +1/4) UAA (+1) (Active Cost 45), Must Follow Grab (-1/2) Real Cost 30 Is this a bit much? I mean, you can just grab whoever and toss them to the Moon (well, 5km up anyways). For 30 points! Can MegaScale even be used this way?

Are the weapons presented in the rulebook sized for human-sized characters? If so, how do you design a lance for a giant for example? Normally it adds 1" of reach, but I would think a much larger lance would add more. Thanks, Nick

Is it legitimate to give the Only In Heroic Identity limitation to a character (e.g. a super-hero or a ninja) that never uses any superhuman abilities (including persisten defenses) while in civilian identity, out of a deep-rooted psychological imperative to preserve its Secret Identity or its cover, even if it has no separate "civilian" and "heroic" forms? Similarly, is it appropriate to give a character a "Only When Following The Code" (-1/2, I'd estimate) limitation to a character (e.g. super-hero, wizard, martial artist) whose special powers only work (out of either some mystical prohibition, or psychological conditioning) as long as it respects some broadly-enco…

I am trying to build a character named Scrambler for my Exiles campaign. The character was a Marauder and helped in the killing of the Morlocks for those of you who have read the Mutant Massacre from the Xmen a long time ago. His powers are described as : Scrambler generates a disruptive energy that alters the functional operations of any system he touches (not sure what this really is supposed to do), causing machinery to malfunction or shut down(dispel vs Machines), dispersing energy fields (Drain vs. Force Fields & Force), and affecting living beings to cause paralysis (Ego Based Entangle or Transform) , unconsciousness (Drain vs. Stun), death(Drain vs. Body…

I think I must be missing something here, but the psychological class of disadvantage seems WAY too broad to me. It covers: morality and codes of behaviour, a committment to something, personality quirks, emotional trauma, basically aynthing that occurs mostly in the characters mind. Yet all of those things together are only worth about 1/3 of a characters total disadvantages. I think that morals and behavioural codes should at least be a seperate category. This limitation becomes especially obvious when one is creating a knight/paladin/samurai type character, where the pyschological disads can be incredibly harmful (forcing the character to suicidally stupid…

Okay, this one has been troubling me for a while now, because it's potentially very powerful but also very awkward. I have several campaign settings that I am importing into HERO, but I have some characters who have very peculiar powers that don't fit well with the HERO system. One prominent theme is "Reactive Powers", as they are rather hard to do. Trigger seemed like a good idea at first, but the problem with it is that it needs to be set first. The powers are usually Instant, though a few are Constant, and usually can be turned on and off manually in addition to being "reactive." One example of this is an energy surge a character uses throughout their body, destro…

Standard Effect

Shouldn't the standard effect be 3.5 rather then 3? It would be a more mathmatically sound "average", and the added difficulty in calculation is negligible. Has anyone else house ruled this?
