I got thinking of the rules option since that is where most people tend to get the most problems.  With the extreme variation that Herogames has between the base ability,  mods, and other ways of both making and using the extreme different types of characters that can be created,  many new players are properly lead to believe that this system is way more complex than it really is. Actually dnd has the same complexity and few people cry about that system being strange and complicated.

If you are looking for something other than the popular gold standard, turn towards real history.  The gold standard was big in Europe,  but other parts of the globe used things that ignored metals altogether.  For example China invented a system of paper currency more than one thousand years ago that is similar to what is used today. Just make a quick search online and hopefully many alternatives will appear that would be a better option than the gold standard.

What I am going for with this topic is how the typical person has responded to the presence of the heroes regardless of the nature of the campaign.  If you are using supers, how have they responded to the presence of those with powers? What is the situation in social media like?

I don't believe in the stupidity of people.  However, I do think that they are basically sheep waiting for some leader and willing to follow whatever misguided message someone puts out,  no matter how incredibly dangerous and misleading it really happens to be.

I would say that instead of using CSLs, use the PSL. While I believe that there is nothing against the CSL, the mechanics of PSL works better for the way that it sounds like you desire this skill to operate. 

What makes a mutant different from humans? Is it one or two genes? If that was the case, then normal human children would need to be classified as a new race since they meet this same criteria. In science,  they say that two lifeforms are different only when there's sufficient difference between them that they have no ability to mate under natural conditions. An example would be dogs and cats.  Once they were the same animal and today they are different that they are not able to interbreed naturally,  resulting in two different species.  Marvel's mutants fail to make this required benchmark, so they should be called homo sapiens,  not anything else. The primary reason for hatred that is expressed in Marvel is nothing more than common old-fashioned hate mongering,  and that has been going on since humans have been able to walk. The hate-mongers only have a new target to focus on, but the message has not changed. 

While the typical method is with high SPD, I have seen speedsters  with SPD of 3-4 who use speed tricks to simulate their high speed. Such tricks might be a flurry of blows, generating images so that others target false space, kinetic redirection, super dodging, among many other abilities. Basically let your skills and powers determine what you are, not the SPD. Conversely I have even seen slow, lumbering hulks that have a SPD that can rival most speeders!

I have always gone on the ROT that each person/item gets its own def against any AOE attack.  To make things easier, l only make one roll for the attack, then make a determination based upon the qualities of stated items.  If item is highly common or unbreakable,  then it most likely will not break for some reason. Experimental technology is more likely to fail since it is not as tested.
