I have the Heaven and Earth software and the space map stuff from the Free Stuff section at HG. I still cannot fathom how to use either of these applications to help detail (realistically) the three systems and Ahtabat Galaxy for my original Depths of Space game. I know I want three green habitable planets, but that's about it. Can anyone help?

Hey guys. I know this is a longshot, but it's space opera right? What I wanna know is what a world suitable for life such as ourselves, would be like if it orbited a pulsar. I'm having a pulsar world in my next campaign, and I wanted the world to have its own unique feel. I think the conditions would make for sort of a scarce desert planet, bur I'm still trying to explore more options for it. The human colonists on the world are genetically engineered so that they can withstand being constantly bathed with radiation. If the world is more then a longshot of existing naturally, I was figuring sing the "constructed by uber powerful, ancient race" method, but I want the plane…

Sorry, I didn't know where to post this. Where can I find the distances between the planets of the Terran Empire (or a representative sample of the distances)? Thanks MistWing SilverTail

Very pleasantly surprised to see that Worlds of Empire is scheduled to go out. I was given to understand that the Star Hero line was on hold. I'd llike to know more about what is going to be in it. I've searched the boards here but haven't found any more information. Did I miss anything?

I've prepared a ChView datafile of stars within 150ly of Sol which, unlike the datafile on the ChView website, uses galactic co-ordinates rather than equatorial co-ordinates. The equations used to convert the co-ordinates were found on Nyrath's 3D starmapping site. I elected not to go for the "ultimate anal" option of setting Sol 50ly above the galactic plane. Ben Lin, one of the creators of ChView, has given me permission to distribute the datafile, provided it carries the copyright of him, Jo Grant and myself. You lot are the first to benefit from his permission. Enjoy!

I think I'm losing my mind. I could have sworn that somewhere in Terran Empire or another Star Hero book that made a reference to the Freedom Virus, a virus that infects androids and robots that gives them the desire to be free from the oppression of their sentient owners. But I can't find it anywhere. Did I make it up? HEEEEEEEEELP!

Ok, I have to admit that I am stuck (so to speak) in determining how to describe, in game terms, the single eyed heads of a Puppeteer. I'm planning on giving them 360 degree vision. That's a given. But what else is appropriate for having the ability to move your eyes (and attached hand-mouths) in opposite directions ? Any thoughts or pointers to previous strings on the subject ? Thanks. -Carl-

This started as a discussion about Firefly, but has I think digressed enough to justify it's own thread. Very well-stated, and I can’t disagree with any of it. But on the other hand, if the story is the only thing that matters, why do we have mechanics at all? [Player: “I shoot him.†GM: “Sorry, the plot requires you to miss.â€] Obviously I’m exaggerating to make a point here. My question for the group is at what point do you cross the line between “serving the needs of the story†and “excessive hand-wavingâ€? Of course there’s no one “right†answer, but I’m curious to hear other people’s thoughts on the matter. To me, it

I'm trying to construct a basic "hard rivet" space opera setting, one that tries to seem as realistic as possible without actually letting realism get in the way of the fun. (This way, it never gets too outrageous, but allows just enough outrage to be enjoyable.) In the background information, I mention the "old races"... the Babylon 5-ish "first ones", who were the early species to gain intelligence, technology, and star-empires. I'm avoiding the "they are beings of mental energy" thing entirely as way, way too deus ex machina, but am diving straight into Clarke's Law when it comes to these people. And as I said, they are 99% of the time going to be nothing b…

Hi, I am working on a game that will take place (partly) on a ringworld. Now before I start maping, building and designing the whole thing (damn are they big ) I was wondering if anyone knew of a good source of information on these types of structures. Preferable RPG based, maybe with maps, ideas, etc... That would help make my job easier. Any info, sources, ideas, etc... would be appreciated. thanks

This is not Star Hero or space related, so please forgive me the transgression, but this is where a lot of the more science- and tech-oriented types hang out, so that's why I'm posting it here as well in the NGD. I remember from many years ago (grade school? junior high?) reading in one of my textbooks about a ship -- an oil tanker -- that had been specially modified for certain types of ocean study. In short, it had been fitted with a unique system of ballast tanks that, when flooded in the right order, caused the ship to sink, bow first, until it was fully vertical. In that position only the aft 20% or so of the ship was above water, and the rest of it was pointing…

A small merchant ship, useful for a group of PC's this class is similar to the Natchez as far as basic stats, except she upgrades her hyperdrive to give her longer legs and downgrades the reaction drive, shes also fitted with a larger cargo bay and capacity for a small vehicle.

Hi,Following advice and discussion on this thread, I am starting a thread where I can post Stargate adaptations that I create for feedback/comments.The reason for this, is that I am new to the Hero system and was looking for a good way to learn it. So the idea is that I will try to create as much as I can of the Stargate universe within the Hero system, this will give me a chance to try out different rules, starting with heroic characters and moving upto different more involved powers. The other reason for posting this here, other than feedback, is that others might find it useful, after a quick search of the forums all I could find was some discussions on zats, staff weap…

At GenCon, I had a chance to demo the new Constructable Strategy Game from WizKids called Rocketmen. Basically, you punch pieces out of sheet styrene and fit them together into spaceships; it's a variation on a similar game they've made called Pirates of the Carribean. Anyway, the setting has some interesting bits to it, sort of a Buck Rogersesque retro-Sci-Fi romp. I like the animated short films they've made for it, available on the WizKids website here. Anybody else seen it? I've given some thought to its portability to Hero, but I was wondering if anyone else is also interested.

I was tinkering over on the Pulp board and it came to me... Star Treks - A Piece of the Action. It's a great idea for a federation/science team setting of Star HEROes who have to operate at a Pulp Hero setting. Strange psioics, weird science, a bizarro world ripe for the picking by hostile outsiders. Only the team of explorers from the far away stars can save the exciting era of this world! Thoughts?

This may have been discussed already, but I only just found out about it last week. I think it's pretty darn fascinating. It makes certain sci-fi (and superhero) characters seem a little less far-fetched. My blog article

Click here for the original list. Note that the original list does have some pertinent information not copied here. Also, I've added a few notes of my own in red showing that some of these clichés are more grounded in reality than the authors may like to think. Section I: Overused Plots and Storylines 1. Post-cataclysmic rag-tag armies struggle to kick the Rooskies out of the good ol' US of A. [That's called "propaganda." America's quite good at it.] 2. Post-cataclysmic rag-tag armies struggle to survive against gangs of bandits, mutants, cyberpunks, bikers, etc. [*glances at reports still coming out of New Orleans*] 3. The rag-tag rebel army/fleet…

I have this idea about doing a campaign set in Larry Niven's Dream Park. I will apparently have to pretty much do the writeups myself. Let me share my thoughts on Dream Park and ask for help. Dream Park is situated about 50 - 75 years in the future. It is primarily an amusement park. Kind of like Disney World. Rides, shows, special effects. Especially special effects; as if Disney and Industrial Light and Magic, and anyone else involved in visual, audio, psychological special fx went in together to make a theme park. What is different about Dream Park is the gaming areas. 2 very large gaming areas (measured in hundreds of acres) dominate the space of Dream Park. Thes…

*minor spoilers warning* Dear god. Anyone see Cloud'ss 6 part Sword? How would you build that culterly set in HERO terms? 6 seperate blades that can be used in tandum and then linked in many variations for effectivness. A final Buster form, and a number of quick disassemble and use attacks. Lets not forget the final "Limit" he used too.
