Hi! I am currently working on a new magic system in which mages buy a cosmic VPP and don't have tp pay points for the spells they learn. I would like to have your suggestions for the value of a limitation for the controll cost of the pool. The limitations reads: "character must know the spell to cast it". To learn a spell a source of information is needed, the character must have a knowledge skill in the appropriate school the spell is from, he must make a successfull roll on his KS and he has to invest time. I am planing 1 day of learning per 5 active points in the spell. The number of spells the character is able to learn is control cost x 2. My actual c…

Looks like we're playing Fantasy HERO for the first time with a mixed bunch of people, all of whom have at least played D&D before. None of us has ever played HERO before. It had better be awesome or I think I'll get beaten up in the supermarket using 500-page blunt instruments, but that's another story... I'd like to bootstrap an existing setting which is reasonably familiar to D&Ders (possibly a D&D setting), and fairly lightweight in tone as I don't see how anyone can take anything D&D seriously ("Open door! Kill monster! Take treasure! Get xp!"). The additional less-D&Dish elements I'd like to feature are : - the impact of a recen…

Based on another post from this forum: Backstab +1d6 HKA, can only be used against unsuspecting foe (-1), requires a killing weapon of opportunity ( ½), No STR Bonus (-½); 15 Active Points, 5 Real Points A character can double the base weapon HKA as normal with STR etc., but the Backstab damage is added on afterwards and can't be augmented. Does this sound reasonable? Thanks, (_8(0)

I'm trying to develop a more indepth sense of political structure for Fantasy hero towns. I want there to be complexities in the system of houses, lords, and nobleman. I need both very general assistance with doing this as well as some specific details to help me design this. The general assistance, is quite simply, has anyone done this before? It is one thing to take existing relationships and map them down on paper. But I'm trying to create an entire relationship from scratch and make it complicated enough to make things interested. If you have any advice on how to set this up, please share. One example I have designed so far goes like this. The Baron fo…

Hey all- just curious to see if anybody's done a HERO game in the vein of He-Man, Blackstarr, etc? I'm toying with the idea of pitching such a game to my group once my MBA classes ease off a bit. Any pointers (aside from watching the cartoons in question) would be helpful.

Hi! I want to ask you how you deal with END in your FH games. Do you charge non-magic-users END for actions and attacks? Do your spellcasters use their personal END or an END reserve? Therefore I have started a little poll, please tell me (and the others) how your games work.. I personally favour END reserves for magic users, just to make sure that a mage won't use his spells every 5 minutes and therefore a really lot of times a day... ...and i don't charge personal END for actions, cause of combat speed. thanx for answers and greets from berlin swobeas doh I have pressed the wrng button and therefore the thread is without the pol…

Hey all you GM's out there in Herodom, I'm a long time DnD player who's been converted to the d6 Light and have been heavily involved in playing in a Champions campaign for about 4 years now - I've even filled in as a guest writer/ GM on a couple of occasions. I can manage combat effectively and run scenarios pretty well, I think. But, despite my best efforts, the FH campaign that I'm trying to put together has faltered twice. I'm now on the cusp of being ready to launch my Turakian Age campaign, have the first several adventures laid out and have grown very familiar w/ the setting, etc. But, I keep coming back to this recurring problem of participation. I…

I did some extensive research trying to figure out the difference between Kings, Barons, Dukes, Earls, Marquess, Counts, Viscounts, Lords, and Knights. Here is my abbreviated conclusion. Counts are generally people who are in control of a region (or County) of a King's land. An Earl and a Count for pretty much all intents and purposes are identical as Earl is the Latin word for Count. I like it would seem with all titles, it various how it comes to be but for the most part, Counts are hereditary and gain position by favor from the King, usually for swearing allegiance. Baron has meant many things in history but for the sake of a game system, Barons are primar…

Thought I would have some fun converting my namesake character from Rolemaster to Fantasy Hero. Here he is if anyone is curious, or wants to use him as an NPC. He is only Acrobat 6.0+ compatable, for size reasons.

Hey guys I'm using a system that relies heavily on using expendible foci for spell components. That means that spell casters can only use their spells as many times as they have the appropriate foci. Now, there are: Easy to obtain foci Difficult to obtain foci Very difficult to obtain foci Extremely difficult to obtain foci I am assuming that since the spells are paid for in CP's that there should be a reasonable number of components on a caster's person at the beginning of the game. I also think that the number of components on that person should possibly be more for those foci harder to obtain. Here's my rough proposal: # starting components/…

There are some rules problems with this character - because the player designed it, rather than myself. The problem is that all his spells require two skill rolls - when in my setting the second roll should be optional. http://www.curufea.com/games/western/campaign/Alden.HTML

This is for an upcoming game set in my version of the Western Shores. He's a conversion of the player's D20 character. Let me know what you guys think- Ahem, just on the slim chance that my players will actually check these forums, I'd better not put him here... sorry.

Now this character is kind of the McGuffin of the first few sessions. This is entirely the fault of the player, whom I blame for being lazy and choosing to start with an unknown character, with amnesia (and unluck). This is a modified version of the Rakshasa from FHB. The reasons behind this will be explained in my thread on the plot (just because I really, really would like input/discussion on it) http://www.curufea.com/games/western/campaign/The%20Beast.HTML

This is one of the other characters from my Western Shores game. He has two rather powerful magical abilities, which he bargained (before the game started) with a god to get. This is equivalent to "selling out to a company" if you're familiar with Cyberpunk at all There's still some tweaking on this character to be done (for example, the disadvantages, he'd like to add "quirks" and change some of them around). The organisation "Loki's Hand" is a subversive anti-establisment group that borders on terrorism (but is usually more subtle). http://www.curufea.com/games/western/campaign/Cadmus%20the%20Bard.HTML

At first blush this will appear to be the site of a man with a freakish obsession for building replicas of real world castles with legos. Thats because thats what it is (though they're impressive as all get out and worth a look in their own right). The man has, however, researched the castles, obtained maps and drawings of them, and drawn out his own castle plans for building them. And that's what is really cool about this site: those drawings and plans are posted on his site along with pictures of the lego castles. As a result, its a veritable treasure trove of real world castle maps and drawings, as well as his construction plans, which some RPGers might find useful. Wi…

This is the magic system I am useing in my game please help me determain if it is designed reasonibly. I have only play tested it a little and have so far had little trouble but am looking for more input from experianced players. The Domains of Magic Gaining access to the gift of magic is not as easy as one might think it is more than learning a simple spell and moving on. A character must purchase a different skill for each of the nine magic domains. A character may choice to buy the skills up directly or to buy skill levels for them. However there are some rules on how this works. A character may buy skill levels for magic skills as they are simply purchase…

Hello, I want to have a system of magic where magic is adversely affected by the proximity of cold iron. Now, the effect could either be increased END cost, or some sort of drain, or increased difficulty. I haven't really decided yet. What I don't know is how to model the very fact of cold iron's influence. Should magicians take a Disad? Should it be a Limitation on spells? Should it have any point cost impact at all? Thanks, jml

So, I've been toying with various ideas for my next Fantasy Hero campaign (I'd much prefer to run something Space Hero-ish, but I have a few players in my regular group who absolutely, positively will never, ever, ever-in-a-million-years play non-Fantasy games... ever). I've been toying with a number of possibilities; while I don't think of our group as being in a rut, I'd like to make sure it stays really fresh. One idea I had was to revisit one of my old campaigns, which I called High Fantasy Hero. In that one, people made 150+100 point Heroic characters who were supposed to be some of the more powerful people in the world. Unfortunately, the PCs started gakking on…
