How about a campaign based on this parody? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bored_of_the_Rings Warning: Some of the characters' names are somewhat vulgar.

Here's a Caleon Item I'm thinking about adding to my game. They're based loosely on the Hearthstones of World of Warcraft. Townstone: Teleportation 1", No Relative Velocity, MegaScale (1" = 100,000 km; +1 1/2) (30 Active Points); 1 Charge which Recovers every 1 Week (-2 1/2), OAF (Townstone; -1), Can Only Teleport To Chalkcliff (-1) Real Cost: 5 ...And most major cities have folks who make these. Now, Chalkcliff has a large crystal structure hidden below it that only allows a certain breed of winged feline to teleport in or out. This stone actually takes you just outside the city, usually to a bar or other touristy spot. "Well, we could go on to the ci…

While watching Harry Potter and The Sorceror's Stone, I had a weird idea for a system of magic for Fantasy Hero. Not really a "system" so much as a set of guideliness. One problem I have with magic in Hero is that it does not feel "special". It just feels like Superpowers with a fairly fixed set of Limitations. So, here is my idea: Magic spells/abilities are unique to the caster/creator. Meaning that, taking into account Power + SFX + Advantage, a spell would be unique to the original caster. In other words: Glen the Gifted develops his Acid Arrow Spell. It is bought as an RKA/Acid/AP. This is now the RKA/Acid/AP for the whole campaign. O…

No, I'm not talking about classes in the D&D sense. I'm talking about people's place in the social order, particularly when that place is settled based on factors outside the individual's control. Most fantasy worlds are pseudo-feudal. This means that there is a very small ruling class at the top, a soldier/warrior class that serves them, a small and barely-tolerated middle class, and a huge laboring class that is little better off than cattle but who do all the actual work in the society. In many worlds there is a class of "non-people" underneath that who perform neccesary but distasteful tasks such as handling the dead. the class you were born into usually…

Call to anyone who can help. I have recently been asked to GM for my group, but I have only been playing Champions for about a year. My usual way of preparing is just to have some plot in mind and stack of possible crunchies next to me for use. I also have a big villian in mind, with the character sheet also next to me. The last one of us to GM reminds me often that the best plans never survive contact with the players. Having this in mind I play off the top of my head for the most part, but feel that I should do more to prepare for the next session. I feel like I am not giving my players my all. My world is based off of fairy tales. The characters and other people …

In discussing my upcoming Caleon FH game, I've talked to my girlfriend and my "lead" player about encounters. Returning to FH after a year long D&D game, we find that we have certain expectations when it comes to "monsters." I've never done monsters in Caleon, preferring enemies of a more intelligent nature. However, D&Der's expect slavering beasties and awfulness. In D&D you have the Encounter Level system where: (Party Average Level)/(Monster Level)=1=(25% of resources needed/consumed to beat the enounter) Or something very close to that. In my opinion, the only reason that ever works is because of d20's reliance on "Classes" and "L…

In working out test chars for Fantasy Hero, I've decided to treat fantasy characters as "Superheroic", where characters have to pay points for anything the average person doesn't have (spells, armour, weapons, riding animals). I'd still like to keep weapons some discrete from characters though, since so many fantasy games encourage the collection of weapons from enemies. I'd also like a more specfic structure for weapons for when it comes to spells that affect what a weapon does and how it does it. My current idea is to set up a framework similar to vehicles/bases/computers with a similar 1:5 point ratio. The basic idea is to describe weapons as having four basic sta…

See, in Caleon, we have steam and magic... And I thought it might be fun to combine the two with a hot redhead to produce this: Steam Angel: (Total: 83 Active Cost, 46 Real Cost) Aid STR 4d6 (standard effect: 12 points) (40 Active Points); OIF (Honkin' Big Steam Powered Arms; -1/2) (Real Cost: 27) plus Armor (6 PD/6 ED) (18 Active Points); Activation Roll 10- (-1 1/4), OIF (Honkin' Big Steam Powered Arms; -1/2) (Real Cost: 6) plus HA +4d6 (20 Active Points); Hand-To-Hand Attack (-1/2), OIF (Honkin' Big Steam Powered Arms; -1/2) (Real Cost: 10) plus Stretching 1" (5 Active Points); OIF (Honkin' Big Steam Powered Arms; -1/2), no Noncombat Stretching (-1/4) (Real Cos…

One of the seminal artists of the roleplaying game industry has passed away: http://www.acaeum.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2287 As one of the oldtimers who purchased the original Advanced Dungeons and Dragons books when they first came out, I remember David's evocative imagery as one of the key elements bringing that game world to life for me. His last years were very difficult, but I'm pleased that he got to know how many people remember and love his work. From all reports he was a fine gentleman who deserved all the success he enjoyed, and more. Thank you, Mr. Sutherland.

As a periphery to the whole "Encounters Paradigm" notion... how do you folks handle magical physiology? In a setting where magic has been around a while (for example, my world of Caleon takes place in a universe 12.5 billion years old) natural selection might select for "mage genes" and certain critters would develop spell-casting ability. Or, more likely, abilities would develop that resembled spell casting. Think of it as the difference between a bird's wing and a 747... they do the same thing, but one was a naturally-occuring evolutionary change and the other was purposefully designed. This is also handy for explaining a system where Mages are born, not trained or…

My group and I have decided to develop a fantasy world which is a topographical carbon copy of our earth with a few exceptions which include but are not exclusive to the following. 1. Magic or mana exists as an ambient energy. 2. Unlike earth, this world is hollow with an entire otherworld at it’s center. 3. Elves, Dwarves, Orks, Halflings, Humans and several other races inhabit this world 4. There are two suns around which it orbits. 5. Three moons, one at least which is habitable orbit it. 6. The system also contains 10 other planets. One replacing the asteroid belt, but a huge asteroid belt lies just beyond where Pluto would be. …

Hi! I have spent the last weeks with thinking over my magic system for a quite low fantasy campaign. Characters will start out with 35+35 points and the cost for STR will be doubled, because i think in fantasy to many things like damage, encumbrance and therefore DEF+DCV depend on STR. I will play in the warhammer world but I won't use any conversions as the one from KillerShrike, I just want to use it as a great backround... Here now the magic system I have thought of: Game mechanics: Spellcasters buy a VPP which grants them the ability to cast learned spells VPP -1: OAF: Wizard’s staff -1/2: Concentration 0-DCV -3/4: Extra Time; Full Phas…

For those wondering at the title, in the Marvel Universe comic books, one bad guy by name of Kulan Gath has made more than one appearance where he attempted to alter the modern world into the sorcerous conan like times he knew so well...with himself as ruler, natch. I don't plan on ripping off things THAT Directly, but it occured to me that if I had modern Earth abruptly altered into a fantasy setting for a new campaign, it might save me some effort, and be fun to tinker with to boot. Skyscrapers might turn into towers, Assault Riffles might become swords, and people wouldn't even remember how it once was. I could go several ways as I see it. I could have histor…

Unbelieving: RKA 4d6 (60 Active Points); Limited Power Power loses almost all of its effectiveness (Only if cast before target interacts with caster; -2), Requires An EGO Roll (-1), Beam (-1/4) Real Cost: 14 I'm working on a Professional Package Deal for Caleon that involves "Not Believing" as a source of magical power. Is this a decent simulation of not buying into an objects existance? Other powers might be defensive in nature. "Oh... you did not just shoot that green **** at me..." Thoughts?

I don't normally post in the Fantasy Hero Board, so hello to any of you I might not know. Here's the backstory: I'm working on creating my own fantasy campaign world. I'm using some old AD&D suppliments because, well, I happen to have them and there isn't any actual AD&D rules in there (other than a list of races, which can easily be replaced with races I plan to use anyway). So currently I'm creating the pantheon of the campaign area, make a few random rolls and come up with something interesting. Among a bunch of major deities with specific portfolios relating to nature, healing and storms, I get this lowly demigod and roll Everything for his sphere of inf…

Terra Fey is a world of fairy tales with free will. I have introduced to my players that The Stepmother (from Cinderella) has created a crime family. Racketeering, extortion, demanding tolls from passers by on certain roads (which is how the players were introduced to The Stepmother in the first place). I have created her "enforcers" which are The Lollipop Guild members with oozies. It is a cask sized tank with a fire hose type device off of it to spray those who will not pay the toll with an extremely sticky ooze (entangle). So the group has been established as part of the world, but now I'm not sure how to create the main characters of The Stepmother (the don) and any l…

Kyoona, the unfinished character you see here below, is dreadfully fashionable... she's a parody of a number of sources... does what I have here take the idea too far? I'm working on creating my game world for a campaign that I'm hoping to get off the ground when I get back to college this fall. Right now I'm doing things awfully half-hazard, stuff that interests me, but isn't nessecarily what's important for an overall campaign world "gazetteer". Are there any online sources that have good, consistent, and detailed outlines for what to cover when creating a campaign world? (System isn't that important, campaign design is pretty much system agnostic) In particular, I'm looking for either a nice step-by-step guide or a well organized world that I can strip out the text and use the bullets as an outline. This will help me make s…
