Man I am reading a series called the Belgariad... I would definitly recamend every fantasy fan get a chance to read this. The usefull ness for insperation is out of this world. The magic system once they start getting in to it is done very well and much like the way I have been doing magic in my games for months. Well just thought I would like to share that with you guys. (Anyone else read these?)

The Swamps of Sadness " Atreyu and Artax had searched the Silver Mountains, the Desert of Shattered Hopes, and the Crystal Towers without success. And so, there was only one chance left. To find Morla, the ancient one, the wisest being in Fantasia whose home was the Shell Mountain somewhere in the deadly Swamps of Sadness. Everyone knew that whoever let the sadness overtake him would sink into the swamp" For every hour spent in the swamps of sadness, characters face a 1d6 NND Ego Drain (Defense is Ego/5 + any mental defense). After he has been drained to Ego 0, the character will begin sinking ⅓†per phase. To resist sinking, characters must make an ego rol…

Working out the details on a new Skill-based Magic System. This one is a bit odd, being Familiarity based and having a fixed list of powers. This is very beta. ******************* Totemic Shamanism: Totemic Shaman believe that the avatars of the animals of the world have awareness and may favor certain people if entreated correctly. By attuning themselves to these animal spirit totems, the Shaman gain archetypical abilities attributed to the totems. This is a form of Divine Nature magic. All Totemic Shaman have a Power Skill called "Totem Lore", which is EGO Based. Further, there are a number of Animal Totems and each Animal Totem contains four 1 pt…

One of the things I like in concept are d20's prestige classes. I want to make something similar to them for Hero, but more along the lines of "Secrets that have to be discovered" sort of things. Ancient ways of doing something, forgotten magics or skills, etc. In doing some initial planning, I hit a small stumbling block. I want some of these to be racial specific. Like the Starbow archers are only Elven of a certain branch or something similar. So if I have say a Multipower that is only usable by Elves...and only by a select group of them, is that actually a disadvantage? My gut tells me it is a SFX and nothing more. However, I could see an argument that if the …

OK a player wants to make a Priest of a Travel and Luck God... I use a MP system for spellcasting. Anyhow I thought up these spells but thought they may be too bent in a Fantasy Hero game. Since you all have more Experience than I do what do you think of these spells? They are running from a 50 pt. Multipower 1) Drain 2d6 of Running, AOE Radius (Double Radius 4" total), 16 charges, Active points 45 2) Drain 5d6 of Dexterity, Standard effect for 15pts, 16 charges, Active pts 50 3) Combat Luck x 2 (6,6) plus Mental Defense 5 plus Power Defense 8, Hard to Dispel double (so x4 active points), 2 Continuing Charges of 1 day each, Active points 50 I will …

I was starting a new campign here and I think I am going to leave this one off. Aren't there enough disadvantages to magic? In my game for example you will have at a minimum Extra Time: Delayed Phase, Gestures, Incantations, an OAF of some kind, must have charges, charges cost End to activate, etc. Then to make the player roll and hope they cast this super limited spell right seems sorta unfair really. Why not just use an activation on spells then? Like 14 or less. Most GMs seem to limit the MAgic Skill so that essentially all spells have the activation limitation anyways. I dunno, I was just wondering how many of you don't use the magic skill and how it is wor…

For the DH subscribers out there who are interested in playtesting The Turakian Age, the file is now up. One note: I listed the deadline as April 12. I have to change that to April 5; we're trying to move quicker than normal on this one. If you have any questions, please post 'em in the "Company Questions" thread of the same name.

Roight! A challenge for youse peoples! In my Undermount Reaches campaign, I have a pretty standard huge-empire-obliviated-by-scary-ass-demon-induced-plague background (well, standard for me, at least . . . ) The thing is, I've planned on letting the plague itself -- the Maddening -- be a pure plot device, but I just felt the need to see how it could be statted out. Now, the disease. It starts as a really nasty Ebola-esque bleeding disease, followed by a transformation of some of the survivors into Man-beast hybrids. I'm thinking of something like a Drain Body, with a Major Transform somehow linked to it . . . ? Any takers? BTW, I didn't see diseas…

In my campaign I'm trying to develop a type of magic based on magical scars or tattoos, and I'd appreciate any advice on the mechanics of it. The essentials of it are these: tattoos/scars are paid for with character points. The materials necessary for the creation of the scar/tattoo must be gathered by the person who's getting the tattoo, and the difficulty of getting these materials is proportional to the number of Active Points in the power the tattoo/scar grants. The tattoo/scar must be placed on a part of the body related to the power in the magic (i.e. on a leg for Running, torso for Healing, face for senses, etc.) The magic therein is limited to a single …

I had an odd idea for a talent, and I had no idea how to write it up. I was thinking how useful it would be to be able to swallow small items, like lock picks or stolen jewels, and regurgitate them on command. or even just regurgitate on command. I knew a guy who could do the latter, and the former just seems cinematic and cool. any ideas?

Well, Epic since it's gone on for three series of 6 issues each, and reprinted in 2 trade paperbacks so far. What is it? Well, its a comic book, called Artesia. I don't know if anyone's read it, or heard of it, but its a well written story, and has interesting artwork. The story is about Artesia, a war captain of a highland kingdom, who eventually becomes a queen. So far, it involves warfare in the highlands, then goes southward to fight for the High King against the Sun Court. Magic, spirits, vampire-thingees. Sex, Blood, but no rock and roll, but theres intrigue, honor, betrayal, loads of stuff. I first saw it in Dork Tower, and didn't think much …

I'm starting up a FH campaign, and at the moment am designing the magic systems that will be in use. My big question here is on the Real Point Cost/3 idea put forth forth in the book. Is anyone using this? And if so, does this keep the wizards somewhat balanced with the rest of the characters? Using the actual (Real Point) cost for spells seems a bit high, but I'm concerned that dividing this by a third will yield an end cost that's too low... Decisions, decisions... Thanks for any help out there!

I can do most of it but the Additive Subtractive magic thing would be nice to have some one else work out for me. I'm hoping to get a little back into HERO -- two of my other favorite systems just announced new editions this week and I fear I may not be able to get them. At least i can, in theory, get new HERO books without going bankrupt. I don't know when Turakian Age is coming out but I would like to run a FH campaign. what i';d like to knwo is if anyone has any idea what point level I should use if I want my characters to start at the equivalent power of 10th-levle D&D 3,5 characters. I don't plan to use D&D classes, of course -- each player should be free within reasonable boundaries to create the characters they want. basically I want characters who are powerful en…

Hey all, I'm running a wild fantasy hero campaign. Started at very low level, 75 points, but the players are working their way up. It is kind of a D&D port, but different. So, I have the Hero Bestiary, but it is really lacking in a significant number of good FH monster. It has a few, but nothing really different and interesting. And not a lot. So, I am wondering if anyone knows of any Hero System monster resources. I would sure appreciate any tips. I am converting some of the D&D monster over, but that takes a long time. Thanks! James
