Hi all; Im in the process of completely revamping the Magic System documents on my High Fantasy HERO site, removing all vestiges of an assumed default magic system and making everything much more generic and broad-based. In the process of doing this, Im moving all of the previous "default" data from the previous main document into the individual magic systems that used the default data, so that each type of Magic System document is self sufficient. This is a pretty time consuming process and far from finished, but I wrapped up the Wizardry rewrite today, so here it is.

I'm trying to make some weapons for a campaign I'm working on and I need some help from more experienced players. Basically I'm confused about how HAs and HKAs compare to each other. I haven't done many games with Hero and the ones I have done used only EBs and HAs. Do HAs and HKAs of equal APs have the same power in combat? For instance, would a 3d6 HA weapon be as powerful as a 1d6 HKA weapon in a typical fantasy heroic-level game? If not, how should I balance the two damage types?

Hi all I just had the strangest experience with my Fantasy game on Thursday night, one of my more volitile PC's (a total combat muppet) kidnapped a local Mayors daughter, held her at knife point then was surprised when the Mayor (and freinds) attempted to and finally succeeded in killing him. He threw a major wobbly, first at the gaming table and then on our game Message Board, rallying against me for "railroading"him into his actions and for killing his character. He said some mean things and promptly quit the group... Have any of you had problems of this sort, or want to share stories / advice / thoughts? Cheers Mate (I'm from New Zealand) …

Translating the Bloodline abilities from D&D's Unearthed Arcana (a buncha house rules, including 3d6 rules for the d20 system!). These abilities will be prefabs that someone with an ancestor of the appropriate type can take (gives more for the players to choose from). I'll post the hdp files when I get finished (few days hopefully) if anyone wants them. I also will put up the rest of my Realms conversions. Anyway, one ability that is in the Titan bloodline is the ability to use oversized weapons. I want to translate this into the ability to wield a two-handed weapon in one hand. The question is : how to do it? I've thought of extra strength, only fo…

I just bought FHG (excellent book IMO) and was having a little trouble understanding the rules concerning Magic Item Enchantment. If I read it correctly, the caster buys the Item with character points as listed with the "Item" description. However, he or she must also pay for the spell (one time only!), in order to be able to create said item (as under "creation spell"). Once the caster knows the spell, he can create as many of the enchanted items as he wants (provided he has sufficient supplies of mundane items, spell components, and END). Did I understand this right? Now, I know the first part of this sounds like a rules question, but I was also curious; …

Looking through the Grimoire, it seems like it's pretty easy to get a high penalty to your Magic roll if you're using Requires Skill Roll in your magic system. Even if you're only taking it at the 1/5pts level, it can add up pretty quickly. So, since I'm still pretty new to all this, I'd appreciate any feedback on these questions. 1) It looks like Penalty Skill Levels are really only meant for combat stuff like range penalties. Would you allow players to buy them for Magic rolls? Would you need to limit them to something like "only for Fire spells" or "only for Summons"? 2) If you had a system where you had one basic Magic power skill, would you allow char…

After I finish the Kane book I'm reading, I'm going to start on the Covenant series, mainly for the setting. I have an old White Dwarf (IIRC) that has 1st ed D&D stats for the ur-viles and the rest, but I wanted to toss this out now and see if anybody has suggestions on how to put this material into Hero. While it'll take me a while to read the books again, I figured the earlier I start the better off I'll be. Has anybody done anything with this setting? So far, just off the top of my head, I came up with the following guidelines (sorry if my spelling is off, it's been more than 10 years since I read the books): Haruchai (sp?)/Bloodguard - LS:i…

Other treasure 1 2

I was watching the Barbarians special on the History Channel when I remembered something. Treasure doesn't always have to come in the form of coins and gems. The Viking chiefs would often reward their followers with valuable items. They were usually made of gold or siver, but they weren't coins. Jewelry comes to mind. Rings, armbands, necklaces are all considered precious. Many have gems set in them. Then there are other ornaments. Siver goblets (like the one Bilbo stole from Smaug), statues, and ornaments such as little golden bells or the like are all valuable. I seem to remember those little golden bells being part of the princess' ransom in Shanghai Noon. …

As I assemble my campaign, I'm working on a web site for it. I want to have a page that describes the Style/Type of Campaign I'll be running so potential players can review it and decide if that's the type of game they'd like to play in. Can you look it over and see if it conveys what type of game it will be? Do I need to add/remove/clarify anything? ----- The bottom line is FUN. The game must be fun for both the players and the GM. It will be an epic medieval fantasy campaign. In an attempt to get the feel and atmosphere of epic fantasy novels that I've read[1], there are a few things that will be different in this campaign compared to the stereot…

I recently got out of D&D game I'd been in for about a year. It was pretty standard stuff. A group of characters with no good reason to be together (some with very real reasons to not be in the group), almost no shared goals (other than accumulating experience, wealth, and magic), and nothing in particular to do but wander around finding ways to get into and then out of danerous and profitable situations. So, why did I quit? There was little story. There was no earth shattering evil that would crush all in its path unless the PC were able to stop it. Basically, I remebered why I had moved away from table top gaming and into CRPGs. I wanted the novel. …

I am trying to get a timeline geled for my world and thought that I might run it by strange eyes to see what they spot that I missed. It is a little different in that it only spans around 2,000 and much of that is lost in the shodowy recesses of a dark age. Note1: Celestine are angelic like beings. Ennwrathi are demonic like beings. Note2: Entries in this color pertain directly to the campaign area. Prehistory: The Great Search. Prehistory: The Valarium, an Eden like state. Prehistory: Contact with the Jann. Prehistory: Numator, the capital of Numeria built by the Aeser. Prehistory: Mention of the White Brotherhood -950 B.C.E Peak of Celesti…

Nature Magic: This is a type of Divine Magic. This system of Magic uses an ambient Magic System tied into the Natural Forces of the world. The stronger the natural forces of an area, the faster a user of Nature Magic can absorb energies with which to work magic. The greater the concentration of nature in an area the higher the REC rating associated with it (for these purposes consider a roughly 30†radius on average as a good-sized “areaâ€). The Nature Magic REC associated with any given area is determined by the GM, but a guideline follows. In woodlands and other verdant natural areas with abundant life the Natural Forces will have around a 25 REC or …

Awarding XP

Hi all How do different GM's award XP and allocatted character points to spend in their games? I use a variance of the old D&D rules but give flat rate points for being in fights, ideas, good roleplaying etc. Each 1000XP = 1 character point. A normal game prob generates 1-2,000 points...

Hello all, working on some magic items and one of them is a consul RPG classic. Fire Armor: +3rPD +3 rED (its enchanted leather) 50% rDR (Fire Only -1/2) OIF (Armor); Half mass; Real Armor I think this works okay, but part of the deal for the fire immunity is a trade off; Side Effect: 1.5x Damage from Cold. (-1/4) Is there any better/more logical way to work the cold vulnerabilty in? Discuss

Anyone figure out how to do a reincarnation spell? Right now I am just using ressurection with a -0 reincarnation limitation (because it is possible for a player to gain a "better" body but also a chance it could be worse). I make them try to pay for the basic stats from the creature writeup in the book while trying to keep the mental stats as close as possible to the original body. Thanks.

So I was looking through the suggested reading list in the back of FH and realized there was one author I wasn't sure if Steve knew about yet. Simon R. Green's "Hawk and Fisher" series. Swords of Haven Guards of Haven Blue Moon Rising Beyond the Blue Moon That's the order of publication, but not the true chronological order of the stories. Not that it made much difference for me, I just ate them up. They are quick reads and a lot of fun and they also address something I skimmed across today. How to handle a mystery in a fantasy setting.

For those who tried the Fantasy Character Generator and found that it was down... well, it's up again. I was told that it was a target of something that looked like a Denial Of Service (my server doesn't know what exactly happened but asked if I could take it down for a bit. Just got the go ahead to put it back up) For those who had no idea... never mind. About 3/4 finished with Hero Helper 2.0 and wanted to know if anyone would want me to put in a "Magic Maker". Ideas I've had (nothing made yet so suggestions are welcome) 1) Make it 'random'. You enter the Active Points or Real Points and it generates something (weapon, potion, etc) 2) Rando…

Hello all, I just finally managed to pick up Fantasy Hero and the Grimoire but I have an additional question. I picked up the Bestiary ages ago, but don't have the ready cash to get Monsters, Minions, And Marauders just yet. What are the main differences between the two? Will I be "okay" to just swing it with FH, the grimoire and the Bestiary? What are the advantages to the triple M? Any insight appreciated.
