I want a power that lets a character ignite any weapon they pick up with Hellish flames (Lethal Energy Damage). I know how to build a HKA power. How do I cost it if it adds to an existing weapon that already does Lethal damage such as a sword? How do I add it to something that already does Normal damage such as a quarterstaff? So for two examples: the character has a sword that already does 1d6(L). They also have a quarterstaff that does 4d6(N). I want to create a power that would let them pick up either and add 1d6 of lethal to it that is added alongside the rest when they hit. (Single hit roll - anything else will both add unnecessary dice rolls and also lead to wei…

So I want to create an "unbreakable" magical dagger as treasure. The characters won't be spending character points on it. I don't think it's an Unbreakable Focus as it is not recoverable if they lose it. Do I simply NOT use the "Real Weapon" limitation, or is there another preferred method to make it "unbreakable"?

I can't figure out how to calculate damage for this. I understand that a charge is a "Move Through" or "Move By", a heavy lance is 2D6KA base, and a heavy warhorse has a STR of 30 and 20m of Running, but this is where I am stuck. Also, is it the rider or the mount taking damage from the move through/move by?

I was thinking about starting a game of Fantasy Hero, but at a superheroic level. Instead of finding and/or stealing gear, they would pay for it with points. The magic system would be more freeform than the usual FH game. I see them as employees of a powerful patron or freelancers dealing with things that local soldiers can't handle. Has anyone tried this? Are there any pitfalls to avoid?

So Acquitaine and Tuala Morn have been on my wishlist for some time. I'm in the market for a setting that I can use as is, or else use as research material for how to present campaign settings of my own creation. Can anyone who owns either or both of these supplements sell me on how awesome they are for these purposes? What to people who own either or both of these supplements think of them?

I have an idea I got from another game system, and thought it might make an excellent Fantasy Hero adventure. Dwdal Valmek was a dwarf brewer that developed magic to enhance the taste of his beer. As a gift to the Royal Family, Dwdal gave the King Hardin his crowing achievement, a book called "Dwdal's ancient brew master guide." The beer brewed from this guide has a significant magical effect. It is so delicious that after a single glass the drinker refuses to drink any other beer or other forms of alcohol. The King quickly perceived the danger in such a book, and quickly hid it in the hands of his most trusted brew masters. Over time, whispers of the magical guide ha…

Is this possible? I'm creating spells for my wizard class and I have all of them requiring a Spellcasting skill roll. I'm baking it into the magic system for any type of spell from Flight to Magic Missile. However, for attack spells this then leads to a player having to make two consequtive rolls just to hit someone. Which effectively quarters their chance. So for example, I want a minor spell like Magic Missile that does damage roughly equivalent to being hit by an arrow. All well and good except the wizard has half the chance of actually doing that damage than the archer because of the additional 11/- (at current levels) Skill roll. Plus the Wizard will probably have a …

This popped in my while discussing magick systems on other threads. How would you do RQ spirit combat? The point is to learn spirit magick but you could use it for other things like spirit possession, disease spirits, etc. RQ spirits actually had very few stats. I guess Ego and Endurance would substitute for Power. I need to dig up Avalon Hill rules.

So I've decided to take a crack at actually worldbuilding my fantasy homebrew. Previously I've had some rudimentary basics down - a continent and what part the campaign setting (nation) occupies, a single piece of mythology that explains why the gods don't directly intervene, etc. Right now I'm brainstorming magic system, and I know the gist of how I want it to look - both in descriptive terms as well as how to build it correspondingly. However, I keep coming up with questions that ask why things are the way they are, what is the underlying symbolism that drives these realities, etc. For example, in the Mistborn setting, there are (IIRC) 4 groups of 4 metals, and each…

OK, I have an idea in my head about a magic system where you pay for each spell individually, but the spells are on a communal charge system. Let me explain, Lets say the mage has 8 charges per day on all the spells. But if he uses three charges to use his Fire Bolt spell, then all the spell now have five charges. If he then casts a Detect Magic, then all have four charges. I am thinking this would be an additional minus one (-1) in addition to any other charge limitations it may have. SO?????

I need help! I'm trying to build an equivalent to the D&D Druid for my Heroic, low-CP (at least to start) fantasy game. We're starting gritty. I plan to progress to more epic levels as the campaign goes on. One thing a D&D druid can do is turn into a wildform. E.g. a bear / wolf / etc. I'm good with just picking a single form right now - not looking to have infinite shapechanging. I'm stumped by how to do this right. I want the character to have actual different physical statistics and abilities in bear form. I've therefore picked Multiform over Shapechange as this seems the appropriate power. I will pick the character's human form as their True Form in th…

I want wizards in my game to have types of equipment similar to how fighters get weapons and armour, etc. Wizards deserve shiny as well and also I think it might balance the oddity of some classes being able to buy "powers" with gold whilst others have to pay for them with character points. I've created three classes of magical implement (based on D&D 4e) which are wands, staves and orbs. Staves give a boost to a spells effect (e.g. increasing DC by one), Orbs help sustain magic and provide a resevoir of energy (reduce the spell point / manna cost). Wands enable a wizard to cast their spells more quickly. I think I can create the first two okay (though suggestions…

So I was watching the last Harry Potter movie where the Elder wand sort of rejects Voldemort. I've also been reading Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series where one can burn oneself out by hanging onto and drawing too much from the One True Source, which then burns one out like a light bulb. Of course I started thinking about this in Hero System terms. Would this play best as a sort of mana system? Or is there a better way to model this?

One of my PCs will be a wizard/mad scientist type, but has not given me any ideas in terms of spells she would be able to cast. So, I'll just make up some based on the faux-German accent and "DOOMship" expression the player kept mentioning (somewhat in jest but I believe true to the core concept of the PC). I figure the main thing is that the spells should either be somewhat finicky, dangerous to allies, or both. For instance, I imagine the PC releasing small elementals/golems onto the battlefield, but they don't really distinguish between friend and foe all that well. (Probably just an AoE attack without Discriminatory, special effect of these little devils j…

What point level do you start your PCs and, and why? My gaming group starts PCs at 125+25. At that level the PCs are good at their jobs, but they aren't UNSTOPPABLE. Not every fighter has Deadly Blow, not every PC has Combat Luck. An ork with a spear or a city guard with a short sword is still a threat. I've been kicking around ramping the campaign up to Heroic, 150+25. At this level the PCs will be more epic, and common peasants with daggers will not be a hazard. But the PCs will have to adjust to the idea that nearly every "bad guy" NPC will have Deadly Blow & Combat Luck, and they will have to build their PCs and play accordingly. What levels do yo…

So I have a few problems with trying to teach Fantasy Hero Complete to new folks. I am tying to teach a buddy FHC, and he's been gaming for decades, but there are some problems cropping up. I'd like to get some feedback from sone newbies, or anyone else, who can see the problems with learning the system from an "outsider's" point of view. My buddy's point is that the new FHC is written with the intention of teaching new people, but it is written and presented in a way that is useful to Hero System veterans, not newbies. First off, in all honesty, it's horribly edited. I can find at least one typographical error on virtually every page, which is really bad form for what …

I want to make a power for a character that allows them to conjure vines that wrap around people and bind them up. The basic power seemed simple enough (though correct me if I've made a mistake) Clutching Vines (real cost: 5CP) Entangle 1d6 (10CP) Increased Endurance x3 (-1) I want to do something a little fancy, though. Firstly, I would like to make the vines do progressive damage for as long as someone is entangled. Say 2d6(N) per turn. Entangle doesn't do damage by itself and Damage Over Time modifier seems both geared towards powers that do and also is built around a set time limit whereas with this it's unknown how long it will be before the vi…

Since it has been a while since I have seen a thread dedicated to the topic of Magic System Design crop up, yet the subject continues to be broached frequently in other threads. So I think its time we got it all out of our system in a proper forum. When it comes to Magic System Design, there are few (if any) wrong answers. I am sure we all have strong opinions on the subject, but lets try to be civil. What kinds of Magic Systems have you used in past campaigns? How do you think a Magic System should work? What Game Elements do you think should be used to represent it? How do you think Magic should be presented?

Someone on Reddit did a pretty cool analysis of taking the iron from the blood of one's enemies and forging a blade from it. Which makes me thing of an entire run of Soul Blades a fantasy campaign could have. Forge the blade from the iron, quench it in the blood, burn bones to make steel, etc. The process bonds souls to the blade and allows the wielder to draw on their experiences and skills... at a cost. The blade also takes on some of their will and personality, which is hostile to the wielder.

I have updated several of my past submissions (mostly just minor changes the their formatting, but in some cases minor corrections were also needed). I have also posed several new submissions, namely a Human Necromancer, and an Animated Skeleton for them to summon. http://www.herogames.com/forums/files/file/355-bell-cranel-heroic-fantasy/ http://www.herogames.com/forums/files/file/354-plague-zombie-heroic-fantasy/ http://www.herogames.com/forums/files/file/369-human-necromancer-heroic-fantasy/ http://www.herogames.com/forums/files/file/368-animated-skeleton-heroic-fantasy/

Fellow Game Masters, Have you ever had a great hook for a campaign/adventure and when you get into designing it you have get a mental block? Well that's what is happening to me. Campaign Hook The characters are pretty low power (75 points: 50 Base + 25 Disads) to start and I'll be rewarding 3-5 XP per game session. The five player characters have adventured together before. Their last adventure didn't go well and they all died. When they died, they were judged in the afterlife and were condemned to hell because of one of the seven deadly sins. After spending what felt like 2-3 years of punishment, torture, and torment in their place of eternal damnation (…
