Do we need more monsters? I have ~190 critters at hand, and I wondered if they'd be welcomed? I'm going through the document now, adjusting stuff and thinking about selling it. Maybe get some illustrations going as well. I might just post it for free, as I have some other stuff.

For just about all of us GMs or DMs for you old school-types (which includes me!), sooner or later, your players are going to be creating either completely new player characters or PCs to replace one they may have lost... For far too long, I've seen people come up with some pretty generic origins for their character. If their origins are now big deal, IMO, I think it makes it a little or a lot harder to imbue them with a great personality. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing on people playing their characters any way they want to, I just want to help equip them with some extra dramatic or imaginative 'muscle' so they're a LOT more memorable rather than the typical rogue, …

Hello all. I eventually want to get together a group of friends and play Fantasy Hero with them. I'd like to play one of the small folk, because I like the idea of the "tiny but mighty" sort of character, so I like the gnomes and halflings. But seeing all the different versions of fantasy RPGs like D&D, Pathfinder, and so on, can you all please tell me a concise and consistent comparison between gnomes and halflings? What they are more or less like, their pastimes and combat tactics, and their boons and banes. I'd like to have info encompassing many different versions of other fantasy RPGs to give me a solid idea. Any help? Thanks.

So your a noble adventurer who must be ready to defend the innocent at any time. Or your a sneaky rat who wants to be ready if you decide to cause trouble. For the most part you assume your in your armor, and carrying your weapons. Which in the dungeon makes sence. But is there anywhere you assume your not armed and or armored? Is there a longsword in your bathtub? Do you wear platemail to the royal ball?

I am thinking of setting up a fantasy game where the key power resides in Glorantha-like cults. Characters affiliate with these groups to acquire protection, training, powers and influence. Their are god-like beings at the top of these groups (not quite decided on their nature yet) and a priestly hierarchy. You can be excommunicated from these groups with all the loss of privileges that might attract as well the spirits of retribution. These are pretty well described in many settings and stories. This is part of the asymmetric power structure of these things. i was wondering if anyone has any thoughts of how someone disavowing themselves of a group, for …

For a campaign that I'm designing, magic (bought as a VPP) always uses "mana", which witches typically provide from their own personal mana reserves, or if forced, regular endurace (at a poor exchange rate plus body damage). However if they don't wish to wait for their own mana to recover they also have the ability to draw mana/endurance from other targets, whether that is another living creature, a foci, or a rare manaspring. The way that I envision it working in play is that if a witch is using it on a willing target, she simply touches the target and drains as much mana/endurance she wishes up to her max mana reserve ( mana 1:1 endurance 2:1 -body damage is …

I could swear this has been addressed elsewhere in this forum, but I can't find it for the life of me. I'm interested in coming up with a comprehensive list of character concepts that certain class-based RPGs can't effectively handle. Here are some obvious ones, but what else am I missing? - Experienced But Aged Veteran Warriors - Lightly Armored Warriors That Aren't Monks - Characters With Severe Physical or Mental Impairments - Kids - Arbitrary Races Like Anthropomorphic Animals Or Dralasites Bonus points for characters out of popular works of fiction that could never be done in class systems, e.g. Last Airbender.

I sometimes get the feeling that Fantasy gaming is outside technological advances, we pick a period in history and play 'then' and never advance. Do you ever get that feeling? We have these old races with similar or even superior tech to our own from thousands of years ago but in the Real WorldTM tech levels march forward with times forward rush. New stuff gets invented all the time. Technology never advances so for the next campaign I'm working on I'm going to use my Fantasy World I've been playing in for the last 15 years and wind the clock forward a few hundred years and see what that looks like? I'm going to keep the geographical map of the place I GM and ch…

Lately, the long-running public television series NOVA has run a string of programs on history and archeology that might interest some Fantasy gamers. The latest was "Secrets of China's Forbidden City." How to build low-tech earthquake-proof buildings, among other things. Possible story fodder in the story of how the Emperor of China decided, "I want the biggest palace complex ever," and how it was done. Last week's was "Secrets of Stonehenge," on what's been learned about the construction and purposes (multiple; it changed over time) of England's most famous ancient monument. And the week before that was, "Secrets of the Shining Knight," on how Renaissance blacks…

I'm currently building a character that has a "pure soul" in her concept, and in a fantasy setting it seems like at least a form of Distinctive Features to me. Here are the two versions I have so far: 5 Distinctive Features: Pure Soul (Not Concealable; Noticed and Recognizable; Detectable Only By Supernatural Entities And Creatures) 10 Distinctive Features: Pure Soul (Not Concealable; Noticed and Recognizable; Detectable By Uncommonly-Used Senses) This isn't a paladin or cleric, more like a martial artist with an untainted soul. She radiates innocence and a kind of gentle goodness. The first version seems to me to be a bit like what a virgin …

This is a "how would you handle this in your game" question, not a rules question. A ranger PC in my current low fantasy game is a falconer who bought Mind Link with his trained bird. (I suggested calling the power "Bird Brain Connection" but the player demurred.) Note that the falcon is a perfectly normal tho well-trained bird. (The PC does have Animal Handler.) It's not magically uplifted or anything unique, and if it gets killed, he buys a new one at Pets R Us and trains it up. We debated buying the bird as a Follower, but decided if I wasn't going to make the other PCs pay points for their horses and so forth, it didn't make sense for him to pay points for a…

I’m thinking about the use of nets in heroic fantasy combat, a not-uncommon trope in the genre. (Hello gladiator movies!) Aside from superhero gadgets, the only published write-up of a net weapon I can find is the Japanese Toami in HMA and EG. Toami, Normal: Entangle 4d6, 4 PD/4 ED, Entangle And Character Both Take Damage (+1/4), Area Of Effect (2m Radius; +1/4); 1 Recoverable Charge (-1 1/4), OAF (-1), Range Based On Strength (-1/4), STR Minimum (-1/4), Real Weapon (-1/4) [60 AP, 15 RP] OK, let’s go with that. Tough enough that even a strong guy (18-20 STR) will have a hard time tearing through it bare-handed, but relatively easy to cut through with a sword o…

A really long term and or epic curse was often built as independent (enchantment) on a person or the land. Not necessarily needing a focus. However 6th doesn't have independent and in 5th you may be using Create effect as your enchantment. So what does a long term curse or blessing in either look under such a system? If you use create we are talking about some heavy ritual. And how do curse someone afar with Create? Is their other options?

I am looking to create a set of lower powered magical items for use in FH generally. These don't have to be fully built powers, although if you want to do that it's obviously fine as well. The purpose is to have a list of minor items that can be used as treasure or made available for purchase (where appropriate). I will start with a couple and add more as I come up with them. I am primarily looking for items that will not greatly affect the gaming world, are low in active (15 and under) and real points (5 and under). Expendable or not expendable are both fine. Please don't assume any particular type of magic must be present (nothing that relies strictly on Vancian or RM m…

I had this thought coming to work about magic resistance. Since block, ranged is VERY GM and Sfx, and a blocked attacked prevents damage, why not use it as a form of Magic resistance? I would work like a saying throw and depending on game, races could buy increase levels to the roll. For example, dwarfs buy +1 with block, range - magical sfx. A wizard shoots a magic fireball and hits. GM states that dwarfs are at -0 to block so now the dwarf has a 12-. If dwarf makes roll then the effect is resisted. It could be that I'm tired but this seems to be a workable magic resistance. Note though the dwarf is fired upon by a regular arrow and he is probably at -4 - no bonus.

This is a question for the GM who use the Hit Location in game. Just want to know if each time a character hit a target you roll for the hit location or you use it only if the player call the shot. When he don't call is a chest attack. TY in advance Steph

I recently had a notion for a fantasy world that has sentient golems as its rulers instead of organic types. I’m just fishing for any ideas that might be out there to bulk up the concept. I could see a PC group as rebels against them, but I’m wondering what other notions could be wrung out of a fantasy world with flesh beings ruled by a former servants race like golems.

Hello Friends, There is a kind of super complete equipment list for the Harn world. A list with prices in Harn currency. I have that one of the basic Harn world. But something really more elaborate. Thank you in advance. Steph

Greetings Herophiles, I've wanted to do an homage to the Dark Sun world for some time now. I've also been hearing more about Zachariah Sitchen's Annunaki mythos. In short, Sitchen posits that ancient alien gods came to Earth, created modern humans via genetic manipulation as a slave race and then hopped on their wandering planet (Niberu) for a quick jaunt across the galaxy. I took that idea and ran with it. So first draft of back cover blurb: In Ulum's pre-history, the Annuki came down from the skies and mingled their blood with the people of Uhlrum. They created Man to mine the precious ores from the planet and then left, leaving the world fresh for the conquest…

Hi! Hopefully a simple one. I'm looking at the fire, acid, et al. rules (6E2,p147) and I can't find anything that explicitly states when you take damage from a harmful environment but the acid damage example seems to imply that a character takes damage on each of their phases. However, surely this must be wrong as it results in the following: Nimblus the Nimble, Elven Rogue, has Speed 4. Chunketta the Dwarven Warrior Maiden has Speed 2. Both are trapped in a burning room. Numblus the Nimble burns to death twice as quickly as Chunketta, (we'll assume the unlikely chance that rED and BODY are the same for both). As this doesn't make sense, I feel I must hav…
