Here's a thing. My buddy Chris is here in Indy for Gen Con, and I can't go, so I thought I'd whip up a dungeon for a special episode of my long-running (1986) Caleon game. Quick Background: A lost sword is now the hands of the vile wizard Dragon Mask (aka Chadros Fane). He and his cult swiped it from some ants. The PCs are sent by this hive of semi-intelligent ants to return Fane alive to the Ant Queen; they can keep the sword, she can't use it. She just wants revenge on him for killing all those pupae. Dragon Mask worships my weird version of Bahamut from Arabic myth. This thing references my 561-page Campaign Guide, so pardon me, but it's very local. Fits really…

I was just creating powers for a "Knight" character and wanted one of them to be an improved disarm that made it more feasible for her to disarm those she fought. So naturally the first thing I did was look up the standard disarm rules with the idea of maybe some PSL or something. But wow - all you have to do to disarm an opponent is a standard Attack Roll followed by winning an immediate Str vs. Str. It's not certain, but if your character is strong (as most PCs will be vs. standard opponents), you've a really good chance of taking their weapon from them. That's REALLY powerful in a Fantasy game. You instantly turn your opponent into someone who can't hurt you. And t…

I don't know if a poll for this has been done previously or not. I am curious about 5th Edition Fantasy Hero settings that were produced by Hero Games instead of third-party settings. Obviously, I am not from Hero Games, so this is just a "wish" poll more than anything. You can select one or more of your favorite Hero fantasy settings that you would like to see updated for 6th edition (in at least a PDF format).

I’m *tentatively* beginning to talk to our investors about a project that would be like Champions Complete, but would be for Fantasy Hero. Like Champions Complete, this project would be a “minimalist” 240-page, softcover, $40 MSRP black-and-white book with no original interior artwork but an awesome new cover. However, there are a couple of different directions I could see this project going in, and I would like your input. Fantasy Hero Complete: A stand-alone book that contains “everything” you need to play Fantasy Hero. I've given some thought about how such a book might be crammed into 240-pages, and it would be a “very” tight fit. But I think it could be done if …

Has anyone ever run a campaign where its basically your boilerplate high tech sci fi universe, like Star Trek, but with magic as well? As in, you have ray guns and starships... and dragons and wizards? I'm trying to imagine how that would work and look and how it would develop. I would think that you'd need strict rules as to what magic and tech both could and could not do, a strong way to differentiate between a transporter and a magical gate. Energy would be the big thing, I'd think. It takes tremendous energy to drive a starship the size of one of those Imperial Dreadnaughts around, but a flying carpet only needs willpower. Another would be speed. It takes…

Hi all, Just wondering about how you handle small characters in your campaigns and the bonuses they get. As per the rules, characters at 1/2 the normal size are harder to hit, so the attacker gets -2 OCV. But characters (Players or NPC's or Monsters) that are small buy their smaller size as a Complication and from what I can see this is usually a 5-10 pt. complication, so the free bonus of "giving" the -2 OCV to anyone attacking them is of at least equal (if not more) value then the Complication that provides it. Not much of a Complication (at least in combat) in that regard. Also, most builds for small characters (gnomes, halflings, etc...) that I see …

Stone magic

Good day everyone. To weaken sturctures of stone. Would you use tunneling? For example, to weaken the structures of a castle. Making holes in the stone seems very effective? Otherwise how do you do this kind of stuff. Steph

A trope created by Tolkien but not limited to him. I'm talking about fantasy races of Men like the Númenóreans. What do you give such legendary humans? I'm toying with longevity and maybe natural arcane or ego defense. Any other ideas? Related question in a setting with characteristic maximum set 15 except one primary, what would having 20 as max in all primaries be worth?

In real life ceremonial magic systems there are rituals of self initiation. This is to simulate that in a Fantasy or Urban Fantasy system where the Magus must go through an initiation ritual before they can use magic. The ritual below is an example on how to simulate that. Ritual of Awakening Thy Higher Self, also known as Invoking Thy Higher Self or The Ritual of Becoming In a prepared area used to cast ceremonial magick this hour long ritual awakens the ability to sense and use magical energies. This ritual is cast during the full moon. Create Effect: Base time 1 day per 10 AP, 1 LTE per 10 AP Perk or Talent Mage 10 AP Mage sight (detect Magi…

Ok I want build a system that may used in fantasy or modern urban fantasy. Practitioners of the Dark Arts and some haints will vulnerabilities and susceptibilities to consecrated items. Example: a consecrated item will do extra damage against someone with this weakness or hit a desolid character who has this. It may also be used for other effects. Example: Practitioners of dark voodoo and their spirits treat lines drawn with red brick dust as force walls with PD/ED/ Ego defense. If a circle is drawn then there is a force globe with respect to the attacker with this weakness. Question is this cosmetic or minor transformation to consecrate the item like holy wa…

Say you want spell that creates an endurance reserve to power another effect. But the mage must fill that reserve with his own endurance. What is that worth as a limitation 5th edition?

Hi, I want to make a power for priests in my game that lets them inflict a terrible ringing sound on unholy creatures. So for example, it specifically affects creatures of the Fey type, or Undead, or Devils (according to the priest in question). Much like how in some folklore faerie folk could not abide the sound of church bells ringing on a Sunday morning. I'm actually going to do two variants of this - one that happens when the priest chants their scriptures so that marching clerics can Dixit Dominus a pesky devil back down into Hell, etc. And another which will be attached to the temple bell and obviously have a much wider range - but that's not a PC power, tha…

And then one day it suddenly occurred to me to add some sort of "scientific" taxonomy to the fantasy races, and perhaps to the monsters as well, to my fantasy wolrd. Have any of you don't anything like this? I'm not looking for anything actually scientific - I'm looking for a classification that the people (specifically human sages) would come up with within the game world. So it may have various internal inconsistencies and biases. For example, if humans are homo sapiens, then halflings might me called homo minimus. Of course, if the halflings had come up with this system, they might have called themselves homo sapiens and humans homo gigantes. But of course, halfl…

I want to build a couple of powers using bats or crows to accomplish a few things. Looking for input on how best to go about it. The few things I know I want; lets pretend they are all for crows. Use crows to spy (Im guessing this is going to be a clairsentience vision/hearing) Have a crow verbally deliver a simple message/command. Maybe a minor mind control for odds and ends? (follow this person....etc) When using a bird as a clairsentience focus point, will I need mind control to tell it where to go, or is that incorporated in the Clairsentience power? and now finally ammunition: Should I build a summon to bring crows to me to do said work? Would they be inheri…

OK I want to start doing a series of Hero builds of classic weapons through history, specifically swords at first at least. Keep in mind that some of these have a tremendous amount of variation in source material through the ages, sometimes contradictory. I'm going to dig through the info and try to present a functional version of each weapon based on what I prefer from the various versions. For example, the first one -- Excalibur -- is pretty recent, but legends go back to the late Roman period and the name isn't settled until just a few hundred years ago. Modern re-tellings of the story have quite a bit of variation as well with Bernard Cornwell stripping th…

So from time to time I try to convert games from one system to Hero just to see how it will work out and balance. (hint it doesn't) One I was having trouble with was the Summoner. They have a whole set of summoning circles that brings something to them that they can then try to dominate and keep as a servant for the next few months. So I was thinking of Summon as the power, then realized that after being summoned they are actually made a Follower under Hero rules. But Followers can get expensive, and the summoner can at higher levels get access to more dominated creature as well as more powerful ones. As well they can switch out their Followers if they want…

Hi, What is the logic behind having both Damage Negation and Resistant Protection powers. I get the thematic difference between someone who is, say, made of slime and can ignore being stabbed and a knight in armour whom the same blow will simply slide off. But mechanically is there anyhing particular to separate the two? Are there scenarios in which reducing damage classes and reducing damage are meaningfully different when attacked? I'm creating a devil creature that has resistance to fire and it just got me wondering what I may have overlooked. Thanks, K.

I am looking to design a magic system where magic cannot be easily controlled and it is realtively easy to loose control of magical energies. The current idea that I am working with is something like: Roll of 3: Overpowered results, effective active points & advantages double in spell or other very excessive effect (GM's choice) Roll made by 4+: 50% increase in effective active points and advantages in spell or other excessive effect (GM's choice). Roll missed by less then 4: Fizzle, pop, Sparks or other some sfx. Roll missed by 4+: negative effect similar to mad by 4+. Roll missed by -10 or rolled 18: negative equivalent of rolling a 3. Does anyone ha…

Hi, Hopefully a simple one (though is it ever! ). I want to do a poison attack which does Normal Damage over time. That part I think is easy enough. However, obviously wearing plate mail shouldn't help you fight off poision so I need to disallow armour / resistant defence. That I could do with AVAD, it seems. However, whilst it makes sense that Armour wont help you fight off poison that's been injected, it makes a lot of sense that it should stop the stinger (Attack is a poison tail stinger) from injecting it into you in the first place. It should be harder to inject a knight in armour than a peasant in a cloth tunic. And I don't want it to render armour inconsequent…

I was recently pondering the game effects of deities in a game world. What benefits does worship provide? If in good standing with the temple of a god providing healing, maybe you get a discount on healing magic or a blessing, but what else could you get? Why would a character devote some of their time to worship service, making offerings, etc, when they could be out battling evil? Then it hit me. The reward could be a bonus pool of Heroic Action Points, filled and refilled by performing worship and obeisance to your character's deity, sacrificing money and/or magic items, etc. It would be like a form of Brownie Points a character could earn and re-earn, a…

I want a power that lets a character ignite any weapon they pick up with Hellish flames (Lethal Energy Damage). I know how to build a HKA power. How do I cost it if it adds to an existing weapon that already does Lethal damage such as a sword? How do I add it to something that already does Normal damage such as a quarterstaff? So for two examples: the character has a sword that already does 1d6(L). They also have a quarterstaff that does 4d6(N). I want to create a power that would let them pick up either and add 1d6 of lethal to it that is added alongside the rest when they hit. (Single hit roll - anything else will both add unnecessary dice rolls and also lead to wei…
