I considered posting this in the Rifts HERO thread, but I decided that it is a broad enough concept to merit its own thread. So... in some cyberpunk games (Ghost in the Shell immediately comes to mind) characters can completely replace their flesh and blood body with a bionic/cybernetic one. In common HERO parlance, Restrainable (-1/4) is applied to cybernetic enhancements. To me though, something about that becomes dubious when it comes to a complete bionic body. Should Restrainable (-1/4) be used for base CHAR? Should it be an all-in one Physical Complication? Could there be a comfortable set of conditions for certain abilities i.e. some are covered by a Ph…

I was recently reading a science fiction novel in which it was mentioned that a particular star nation's ships had a higher level of automation than another nation's ships, resulting in smaller crews and greater durability in combat. It makes sense, since a ship will be less hindered by a weapons bay being opened to vacuum or an engine room filling with toxic fumes if there are very few flesh-and-blood people in those areas. I started thinking about how to do this in Hero System. You could go the route of some other games and determine the exact number of crew members based on the systems installed on the ship. Then you could buy a basic computer with Extra …

We've lost all website order data from between the 8th and the 11th. I have some backup records, but they don't tell me everything I need to know. If you ordered during that time (even PDFs), please contact me at jason@herogames.com. I'll need to know what you ordered, what your shipping address is, and the last 4 digits of your credit card to verify your identity. Furthermore, all customers who have been inconvenienced by this data loss shall receive a set of six Hero Dice when that product becomes available in the near future. Thank you once again for your patience. “The Management”

Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where you're going to regret not buying something, but you don't have any other options. The seemingly brief period when Comstar had the license to do the Traveller Hero titles coincided with when my wife was in grad school. School + crappy economy killed our discretionary income. Fast forward to now where I really have a hobby budget again... a lot of which has gone to Hero... but of course now there isn't a legit place to get the two Trav Hero books. (Not even at any of the usual online book buying places.) So, if any knows where I can pick these up, please let me know. Thanks! --Charles

For all those playing in Star Wars Settings, new Material is comming up: Disney bought Lucas Arts. And as core of the deal, they will be bringing out a new Feature Film - as early as 2015. And they said "Disney acquired a detailed treatment for the next three “Star Wars” films as part of the acquisition": http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/30/disney-buying-lucas-films-for-4-billion/

How would have to wear an external respirator effect characters in Star Wars and Star Heroes? Would there be any other effects on a character if it external respirator is built into a refrigation suit? Would the external respriator have any effect on character with force powers? Are there any aliens in Star Wars and Star Heroes that wear refrigation suits? How much protection should Sith Armor have?

I'm planning on starting a new Star Hero campaign soon and I'm trying to think through some of the details. Previously, one oddity was how cheap personal equipment was compared to ship stuff. You could easily afford the best hand weaponry that was commonly available well before any type of ship upgrade. That is, however, quite realistic as well. In my prior campaign, there was a bit of sameness amongst the part members as well since they could all pick up that same autofire laser rifle and fire away with something like a 1-point WF skill. I'd like to give players a reason to choose things like martial arts melee styles or psionic powers. I think resource pools (as th…

In your Science-Fiction games, does armor tend to still be useful, or is it mostly (entirely?) obsolete?

How's this for truth stranger than science fiction: Granted, this is no easy task for the whale (Requires A Roll, Side Effect: 1D6-1 Stun Damage, perhaps). Nevertheless, this is the kind of thing that breeds cool science fiction. For example: what if a whale learns a human language and starts demanding its freedom or equal rights? What if it becomes an ambassador for its kind? What if it turns out that beluga whales are the Vulcans of the sea, far more logical than humans? Regardless, awesome.

Some Uber cool research stuff here. My hopes go with the Venusian landsailer. (I didn't know about the electronics designed to work in jet engines) http://www.nasa.gov/offices/oct/stp/niac/niac_2012_phaseIandII_awards.html

In a society where people can go from one planet to another at will (like we cross the street), what is the incentive for someone to try to save the planet that they are living on? After all in such a society if the planet that someone is living on gets to the point that it is unlivable (or encounters the Death Star), simply gather your stuff and move onto another planet that will allow you to live in some manner. Don't forget the toilet paper!

While I like Star HERO's solar system and planet generation, I also enjoy trying alternative methods. Here's an article from Squidoo that lets you build a star system from scratch. And you can rolling polyhedral dice. Building a Star System

Recently while putting together information for a Star Hero campaign, I thought it would be cool to try to put together information based on recent exoplanet discoveries. Some research uncovered this site that shows data for currently known exoplanets that lie within the habitable zones near their stars. http://www.hzgallery.org/ One thing that interested me on review of the Gallery link is that a number of these planets don't spend their entire orbital period within that zone. Not that I'd ever had reason to think a planet should be constrained to a habitable orbit, but I'd never thought about the environmental effects of a planet that was sometimes in and some…

I'm trying to figure out/create the stats for a black collar soldier(Reference: Timothy Zahn - Black Collar). They are basically something like a Sci-Fi version of Delta Force that has been chemically augmented to be 3 times faster than they were. It seems excessive to give them something like a speed of 9. They wear very flexible armored suits that are like leather armor that is resistant to laser fire and stiffens from an impact such as from a bullet. Any suggestions?

So it appears that changing the shape of the Warp generators decreases the power required for it to work. Also stuttering the field also gives huge power savings. So it's looking like it may be possible to produce AD2300's Stutterwarp drive. Theoretically capable of moving ships at 10x the speed of light. Article here: http://news.yahoo.com/warp-drive-may-more-feasible-thought-scientists-161301109.html Damn, and I was hoping for something like Jump Space or Hyperspace to be available. LOL. Darned thing probably won't work anyways, but one can hope! Tasha

It doesn't look much like the ones in Return of the Jedi, but this hover bike shows promise, if it's ever fully developed.

I'm sure this has been posted a million times already, but as I'm new to the this discussion board, are there any fan sites for Star Wars, Babylon 5, Star Trek, Firefly, Stargate (SG-1 or Atlantis), Battlestar Galactica, etc.? I did some searching and most links I've found are busted or really, really old and outdated, some having no updates since 2003. Also, as a fan of White Wolf (until I got over my fear of the Hero system) has anyone done anything in the way of Hero versions of Mage the Awakening and Vampire the Requiem? - If you are trying to fail and do, have you really succeeded?

I'm a long time player of Eve and I think in my next Star Hero campaign I may want to emulate some of it's aspects since they work well and give more variety to combat. The optional rule for ablative defenses in 5E is that "and hit with maximum BODY damage that would exceed the defense knocks 5 points off the defense". Perfect, let's see how this might work out analogous to Eve now. In Eve, your ship has three layers to get through before your ship explodes in a ball of fire (and you get a mail stating how much insurance money you get, which is usually insulting and makes you wonder why you bothered buying insurance in the first place). First, you have shields which …

So, the Star Hero book listed on the main site is described as being for HERO 5E. Has there been any news on the possibility of a new Star Hero book for 6E? How compatible is the current book with 6E?

It's another "LET'S HACK" thread, in which we discuss the ways that we might change an official/published campaign setting as well as exploring other possibilities i.e. we "hack" the setting. This time around it's the Terran Empire, HERO's very own Space Opera setting. To start this one off, one thing that always felt like a glaring omission was a killer robot race a la the Cybermen*, Cylons, or Daleks*. Terran Empire needs just such a thing to me, and late into 5e, a book was provided that gives everything you need for such a race: Book of the Machine. Mechanon and all the myriad units he employs are ready made for space opera. I have other things to…
