Your favorite champions character

I have been going around to my little gaming club and compiling my fellow members favorite characters and what makes them their favorite and was curious on what others people's favorites are.

I personally have a Body Control character which i absolutely love. He's the mayor's assistant in the town we play in (the name eludes me right now...) and is jealous that he didn't get elected as mayor. He believes in some sick, twisted form of justice that he thinks only he understands and the only way to get it through to others would be through brutal killings of criminals and heroes alike. He's obviously a villain and usually works alone.

I like this character because i had only made goody-good heroes up until this point and it is fun being un-necessarily evil.

So please post your replies =3

Re: Your favorite champions character

Mine was probably Rage, a native american environmental warrior with a flaming spear. Bit of a glass cannon really, he'd usually be the first one down in any major brawl, but a modicum of regen and some decent Recovery usually got him back up in time to see the rest of the group mop up!

Re: Your favorite champions character

Mine was also a villain, actually.

The character had spent his entire life jealous of supers and their glamorous lives while he trudged away, a decent, respectable guy who was slowly losing his sanity and his soul at an accounting firm.

A news interview with the campaign's NPC flag suit during which Flag Suit stated that he really didn't know how he got his powers-- he just woke up one morning and realized that he was special-- sent poor Carl over the edge. As his mind raced, he realized that he was never destined to gain powers and fight the good fight and win fans and followers and the love of the beautiful people.

He toyed with the notion of perhaps trying to gadget his way to super-status, but dismissed it completely upon admitting that he had neither the talent nor the resources to do such a thing.

Finally he wondered: if he couldn't have powers, wasn't there still some way that he could convince the world that he did?

His plan was really simple: set-up situations in which he could foil crime-- load the scene with tricks and illusions. His plan was also fatally flawed in that he had no way of knowing in advance just how and where a crime would occur....

unless...

He planned the crime himself!

Over the next few years, Carl immersed himself in the study of physics, chemistry-- whatever he could find time to learn. He developed an aptitude for chemistry, and in only ten short (and very obsessed) years after hatching his plan, he had developed an explosive resin that exploded extremely violently, and exploded _completely_: no smoke; no residue; no clues.

He spent the next few months casing his own bank, and even got part time work both as a guard and with the maintenance agency that had the bank's contract. As time went by, he managed to replace over one hundred items inside and outside the bank with perfect duplicates, cast from his explosive resin. Perhaps it was the painstaking, methodical, detail-oriented personality that made him such a good accountant, but his reproductions were flawless: no one even noticed the new fire hydrants outside....

Plastic ficas? Explosive. Desks? Chairs? About half were explosive and waiting for a signal from his remote....

When the day came, he strode into the bank in full costume, proudly proclaiming himself to be "the Kinetic Man, with the power to explosively dissolve the molecular bonds of any piece of inert matter!" and demonstrated his "power" by destroying the front doors and the loan officer's desk.

He even waited a bit when he ran outside with his loot, just so he had a chance to duke it out with the heroes. Against all odds, he managed to escape....

The Kinetic Man went on to enjoy a long career throughout that campaign, popping up from time to time, and no matter what we did, we couldn't quite catch him. As the campaign concluded, the GM had us encounter him one last time and his final capture seemed almost like a "gimme" until he broke down and confessed his whole story.

Man, we felt like fools, but we laughed ourselves sick over the number of times he'd baited us this way and that, and the number of times we'd ducked and covered fearing he might turn our various gadgets-- or even our cover-- into explosive killing attacks!

I will never, ever forget that character, and I will never, ever forget Jim P (not on this board), the GM who brought him to life.

Must have been good times Duke Bushido.

even though there have been only three posts i'd still like to thank everyone.

God, we had a newbie play with us this one time and he controlled one of the premades with gravity manipulation. We were inside an office building duking it out with non-supers and he thought it would be best to increase the gravity and destroy the building. The building obviously collapsed and killed everyone except for the character who always seemed to die first. His name was Asp and he was a cyborg that had a wicked danger sense but that was it. (oh and he was addicted to crack cocaine) So in the end Asp went home and snorted a couple of rocks. Very strange day indeed.

Re: Your favorite champions character

There was another from the same GM, but I don't really know if you can count it as a character, since it was more an exercise in teamwork (a couple of new players wanted to be the brooding loner type. Fine in the literature, but not so great for a group game, ya know?)

The "character" was a woman in power armor code named "Iron Max." The armor started out as a project by students at a super-science college hoping to land military contracts. The interface for the armor wasn't perfected yet and ultimately, the more complex actions of the armor were co-ordinated by the students by remote (that would be the characters we were actually playing).

In typical superhero fashion, "something happened" during the demo for the Pentagon brass, and we ended up battling it out with a real super villain.

It was a short story arc: only four play sessions and very short and simple plot. Like I said, it was an exercise in cooperation.

Essentially, one of the students handled the esoteric senses and detections, etc. One student handled basic movements; one handled weapon systems; one handled power management (ran the various multipowers and END switching) while another was the scientist in the armor, trying to coordinate strategies and hoping that the other players were thinking along the same lines she was: nothing worse than planning to jet out of the way and your multipower has been shifted to offense ;)

It wasn't much, really, but in terms of a really good time, it was another unforgettable "character." And it drove home to everyone the necessity of working together for the enjoyment of everyone.

I think for everyone I've played under, I learned more from Jim P about keeping something interesting, challenging, and fun than all the other GMs combined. I try to use everything I learned from him every time I run.

Re: Your favorite champions character

I have two I like a lot, but I will choose one. Olorin, my unaging goofball medieval mage from another dimension. When I created him, I told my group I was going to create a mage that was "My sense of humor let run loose with the power to back it up." Various shades of "Oh my God!" and "Dear God no!" issued from every lip. I've had a blast with him. He loves to boggle minds, pull legs, and keep people wondering just when he's kidding or not. Being a medieval, someday he's going to kill someone in that modern society says should be brought to trial. Why? Because Olorin got p***ed off or thought the guy was too dangerous to live. It acutaly already happened once, but no one knew it did but Olorin, and he ain't telling. Someday he's going to do it again and get caught.

Re: Your favorite champions character

Mine has to be Black Cat. Played for going on 17 years (is a solo character the wife runs). Karate Kid from the Legion of Superheroes has been a favorite superhero for decades, and I finally got to play a martial artist like him (damage near what the bricks dish out, no stealth, in your face combat monster).

Riot (fka Nemesis) - Mutant Brick Duplicator. The Teamwork skill was a must, the Puns were mandatory, and fun was secondary.

Guardian III - a Mutant Telekinetic with a Variable TK Power Pool.

Cougar III - a Mutant Martial Artist/Hand to Hand Combat specialist. Super Speed and Armor.

Impact/Adamas - A mutant Brick w/Body of Orichulam/Adamant.

Wait I got more...

Re: Your favorite champions character

Deadeye was originally Frank Caine, a private investigator with a personality reminiscent of those classic film noir P.I.s like Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade: tough, jaded, cynical, but with a rough code of honor and desire to do the right thing. He investigated a series of ritual killings, which culminated in him stumbling onto a fancy-dressed guy using weird lightshow powers to apparently attack three helpless women. Frank shot the man from behind, killing him instantly. The women showed their gratitude by transforming into demonic monsters and ripping Frank to shreds.

Awakening in Limbo, Frank heard voices that claimed to be Higher Powers informing him that the man he shot was a powerful white sorceror and that the "helpless women" were three succubi responsible for the ritual killings, whom the sorceror was trying to banish. They told Frank that his murder of the sorceror had incurred a great karmic debt which he would have to repay through benevolent acts on Earth. They sent Frank back; thing is, they didn't send him back alive. He looks and sounds normal, but to any close examination he is in effect a walking corpse.

Deadeye (as he calls himself) has classic detective and brawling skills, the power to detect supernatural forces, to strike blows at the souls of his opponents rather than their physical bodies, and the toughness and resilience to physical damage that comes from being, well, dead. He also has the power to drain the life force from living beings, which can be lethal if Deadeye doesn't control its use carefully. However, he sometimes has no choice but to use this power, as his body can no longer heal itself naturally; this is the only way he can repair injuries to it.

Deadeye's normally dark sense of humor has gotten even blacker as a result of his new status, which sometimes makes people around him uncomfortable. He was never much of a joiner in life, but he feels very lonely and isolated from the rest of mankind since his return, and finds acceptance among other paranormals.

Unfortunately I haven't had an opportunity to play him in years. :(

Re: Your favorite champions character

[Warning: This is long, but you asked for it]

My favorite was probably Troubadour, a character in a friend's Silver Age game.

Background/History: Many would say his business card puts it best:

TROUBADOUR

Warrior, Poet, Lover

While Troubadour certainly cultivates a mysterious image, it's hard to consider someone who lives his life in the glare of the limelight truly secretive. Troubadour has been active on the superheroic scene for over a dozen years. While little actual information is publicly bandied about regarding Troubadour's past, it's all there if someone wants to look at it.

Born Geoffrey Larrocque, of the Usher Heights Larrocques, Geoffrey was raised in the lap of luxury. As a second son, there were fewer expectations placed on him that his older brother, Andrew, leaving Geoffrey to pursue whatever interests struck his fancy.

Fascinated by his family's history of piracy and derring-do, Geoffrey developed an early flair for the dramatic and flamboyant, a flair that served him well when he was cast as D'Artagnan, Junior in the hit TV series "Young Musketeers". The series ran for four seasons, giving Geoffrey free rein to indulge all of his swashbuckling fantasies. In his years on the show, he became a capable gymnast, fencer, and martial artist.

At the end of the show's run, Geoffrey went off to college, where he majored in Liberal Arts and gained his passion for jazz. One year short of graduation, he left school to travel the world. This trip, however, was cut short by the tragic death of his parents in a plane crash, leaving Andrew in charge of the family fortune.

Andrew, unlike Geoffrey, saw little of value in Geoffrey's interests, the family history or, in fact, anything he deemed "old fashioned". Determined to take the Larrocque name to new heights in business, he decided to sell the family estate and use the funds for start-up venture capital. Horrified at the thought of losing his home, Geoffrey used the remainder of the money from his television days and a goodly portion of his trust fund to buy out his brother's half. Andrew agreed, with the stipulation that Geoffrey keep his distance from Andrew's business interests and do nothing to besmirch the family name.

And so it was that, at the age of twenty one, Geoffrey Larrocque found himself the sole proprietor of a forty five room mansion and an incredible case of boredom. His brother's stipulation limited his social calendar; he missed basking in the limelight; and even the mansion itself seemed less alive. Apart from furtive forays to local jazz clubs, he became more and more reclusive.

Until he had his first taste of superheroics.

One night, as he left his favorite club, Geoffrey found himself in the middle of a superpowered firefight. Blue Beacon was taking on Dumpster Diver and the self-proclaimed "genius of junk" was getting the better of the Sapphire Sentinel. Seeing an opening, he caught Dumpster Diver unawares, knocking the piece of trash out cold. At that moment, a new world opened up for Geoffrey. It was exciting! No, it was exhilarating!

Actually, it was all over the papers. "Geoffrey Larrocque, millionaire and former TV star defeats noted supervillain".

Andrew was livid. He threatened legal action. He threatened to cut off Geoffrey's inheritance. He threatened physical violence.

In the end, Geoffrey apologized. It seemed the best thing to do. After all, he hadn't intended to make a public splash. If it weren't for those mask-wearing weirdoes, none of this would have happened. Wait a minute – masks! Of course! He could don a mask himself. After all, he'd already defeated a supervillain, how hard could superheroics be?

Taking inspiration from his swashbuckling heroes and fashioning himself a costume from old bits and pieces culled from the show's library, he set forth to fight crime as The Bard. Using a limited knowledge of pyrotechnics culled from the stage, he crafted skull-shaped bombs to aid him against particularly difficult opponents.

It may have been a silly concept and a sillier costume, but it gave him the freedom he craved. As The Bard, Geoffrey could go forth and conquer, without bringing down the wrath of Andrew. He served a short stint with the Sentinels, (as do many fledgling heroes in the Vanguard Universe), but left over "personality differences". Realizing that The Bard identity was just ridiculous, he disappeared from the scene for a few weeks, only to re-emerge as Troubadour. A year later, he had his name legally changed to Troubadour, in order to appease Andrew, whose business flourishes in Empire City. Since that time, he has been a constant, if not particularly diligent, thorn in the side of evil.

Five years ago purchased a jazz club in downtown Fair City, and named it (appropriately enough) Troubadour's. He makes the scene there a couple of times a week, unless he's off saving the world. Troubadour's is one of the top jazz clubs in the nation, attracting every major act and a host of rising stars.

While he's matched wits (and crossed blades, so to speak) with many supercriminals, there are a few that stand out in his rogues gallery. Cap'n Skulldugger has been a perennial thorn in his side (their chosen motifs do seem to attract one another don't you think?). Secondly (and more dangerous) is the Troubadour Revenge Squad. This is a group of women who, having been spurned by Troubadour at one time or another, acquired superpowers and banded together with the intent of making his life miserable, or at least enlightening him to their feminist agenda. The TRS membership currently includes Large Marge (leader with growth powers), The Shrew, Dollface, Digitalice, and Fury (as in Hell hath no...) due to Troubadour's romantic nature, the group is always recruiting new members.

Personality/Motivation: Anyone with a business card like that can't possibly have low-self esteem problems. And he doesn't. Troubadour believes in living life in CAPITAL LETTERS. If there are multiple ways to accomplish a task, he will inevitably choose the one that shows his abilities off in the best possible manner.

Still, it's important to note that Troubadour has a strong altruistic streak and a sense of noblesse oblige. He comes from the old-money liberal school of politics and has no problem devoting his time, energy, and money to worthy causes. In some cases, this makes him seem like less a superhero and more a garden variety celebrity since he does spend so much time making appearances. In other cases, his strong liberal politics fairly boil to the surface; he excels at asking other superheroes the sort of hard questions the costumed set confronted in the "relevancy" period of the late '60s and early '70s.

Quote: "Forgive me, my dear, I just have to polish of this ruffian and then we'll get back to this delicious...conversation."

Powers/Tactics: Troubadour is a straightforward comic book martial artist. He uses his Find Weakness against slower opponents before leaping into battle and uses his high DCV to avoid damage. If he does get hit, he'll probably go down rather quickly and knows it.

History: In the Fair City campaign, Troubadour started out as a bit of a hero in need of redemption. He was somewhat caught up in his own celebrity and had gotten away from what brought him into the game in the first place, namely the thrill of the chase and the chance to deal with Society's ills head-on. As a member of Vanguard, he slowly moved into a leadership role, and along the way found what appears to be lasting love with his team-mate Gorgon. After her secret identity was revealed and her career as District Attorney ruined, the two of them set out to "Find America, the Real America."

Appearance: Troubadour stands 6'1" tall and weighs around 185 lbs. He has wavy blond hair, a mustache, and goatee. His costume consists of a gold singlet, with a black stylized "T" on the right breast. His boots and gloves are black, along with his mask, which he wears in all public appearances, even though he makes no effort to hide his identity.

Re: Your favorite champions character

My favorites are:

Phidippus, my GMNPC in the Champions game I ran for over 2 years (and will again at some point), a thinly-veiled Spider-Man pastiche with extra arms, eyes, and a light exoskeleton. I've got the chance to play him more than any other character I've ever made (which isn't saying much - either I have to be the GM, or I don't get the chance to play).

Kraken, the character I'm currently playing in a friend's game. Monstrous DEX and SPD, and mid-level superstrength (with extra STR for grappling purposes). In addition, he's got eight tentacles sprouting from his back that allow him to swim, leap, and climb sheer surfaces at tremendous speeds; and he's got a host of cool cephalopod-based abilities, to include (but not limited to) chameleonic camouflage, ink clouds, limited desolidification (squeezing through incredibly tiny spaces), stretching, and enhanced vision.

Part of the reason I enjoy this guy so much is the history - he's an updated/reworked version of my very first Champions character that I made when I was 13 (that's over 19 years ago)! I only got the chance to play him in about 5 individual sessions back in the day, so when my buddy was starting up his game, I dusted him off and got to cleaning him up to my satisfaction. I was (and still am) really excited that a) I finally get to play! YAY! and B) I'll be doing it with my old pal Kraken, who never got a proper kick at the can.

Heck - as long as I'm jabbering, I'll try to post a picture I drew of him:

I'm not sure how long this campaign might last, but I hope Kraken has a good run! Our last session was Thursday (Cephalopod awareness day, amusingly enough) - our first session in over 3 months, since everyone has screwy schedules - and I was the ONLY one who came fully prepared, with my character sheets and the NPCs I was to be controlling in a huge football-style competition. Even the GM forgot his stuff! It was insane! I very nearly had a quiet, polite brain embolism. :nonp: I swear to God - that session could only have started off worse if it involved a house fire.

We ended up playing anyway and things went amazingly well, but only because I've got a freakish memory for numbers and was able to recall the pertinent stats for 3 PCs and 6 NPCs off the top of my head, without having seen them in 3 months. I have to say - that was satisfying. My own mini Kobayashi Maru - turning defeat into a fighting chance for gaming! ;)

(Anal-retentive rules lawyers are a VERY GOOD THING sometimes!)

Stormcloud a Native American flying brick with a small lightning attack. avatar of Heng. what made her fun was a disad, if she was hit she had a chance of being taken over by Heng. made training sessions very interesting. main quote, "So when's the fight start?' after it was over. Re: Your favorite champions character

Any luck with more Kraken games? I can just hear villains mocking him-

"Hey, Krack-Baby! Captain Calimari!"

"What up, Plumber's Krack?"

and worse... Anywho, I like the pic, too.

Thanks! I drew it myself.

We've played here and there over the last two years, but it's unfortunately extremely infrequent. We've had possibly 6 or 7 sessions since October of '09. Our GM is more of a tactical guy than a roleplayer, and tends to give overviews of what NPCs say rather than speak in-character - so Kraken hasn't had any insults leveled at him.

"Let's get Kraken!" has come up frequently, though. Almost like an unofficial battlecry.

I am looking forward to some theoretical point where Kraken meets up with his archnemesis, Moray - I've prepared some Dean Martin inspired lyrics...

"Who brings tears to your eye 'cause he smells like a sty - That's a-Moray..."

"Who is ugly and slow, and whose IQ is low - That's a-Moray..."

(I've actually got about 6 full verses prepared if I really need to get under his skin.:P)

To relieve my frustrations, I started up my own campaign again - Kraken is a major NPC in the superteam the players have just joined. Kraken is the guy that called for auditions for teammates after his old team got blowed up (real good), and so the players have been competing to make the new team. Only a few competitors actually washed out completely, so the players have ended up with an extended roster of 32 NPCs to boss around! It's been interesting, to say the least - they now have separate teams all over the world doing various things - PR, investigation, crisis control, etc.

Re: Your favorite champions character

If I have to name a 'favorite character', it would have to be Samuel.

Samuel is a npc martial artist who shows up in every campaign I've run.

A former supervillian assassin, now pardoned and retired, he teaches "advanced" martial arts to heroes. His home/dojo is in a nasty neighborhood, with a mysterious lack of crime on the block where the studio is.

Down the block from the dojo is a very nice Italian resteraunt where the mob bosses try to work out thier differences without resorting to violence. Samuel provides security... no one violates neutrality without risking Samuel's wrath.

Samuel occassionaly disappears. Rumor says that he does work for the CIA, or Primus, or some other group, as part of the deal that gained him his pardon.

He had nothing to do with the destruction of the Supervillian group, Deathstroke, the arrest of thier leaders and the deaths of over half thier membership. Never mind he was missing at the same time that this happened, it's just a coincidence.

Fun to play would be BRUTE

(Stop me if you have heard this origin before). A Rocket Scientist who was would mutate into a superstrong neanderthal Brick. He would run around saying things like BRUTE SMASH. In his human ID he had an INT of 30...

Anyways, so one day we are running through Island of Dr D. Dr D is stoped, but he has launched his satalite, he will still win...I pass the GM a paper. He rolls some dice, He describes me walking over ot a council and smashing it. The players at the table were "How did you know which one to destroy"...I observed that I was a rocket scientist..."No your in your Brute form...your an idiot right now"...I politely informed him that I had an int of 30, and a ton of science skills...They informed me AGAIN that I had been in my super strong form and did not have access to those abilities. That is when I told them about a small 5 point psych lim I had "Likes to play elaborite Practical jokes", and that when I got in my Brute form I retained all of my intelegence. It had been a six month campeign up to that point...I, the player, had to dodge Pizza crusts, empty soda cans, and paper plates...

That's GR8!!

My favorite RP character is/was from a Chivalry & Sorcery Game back in the late 80's. She was a young mage who pretended to be a young man when out on missions (she was still an apprentice, so her master gave her missions), not only did none of the other characters ever figure out she and "her brother" were the same person, only one of the other players ever did!

BTW, her master was Simon bar Yakov. On the first mission the group did for him, at one point someone said: "You know why we're doing this? Because Simon said."

My favorite character was a brick called Mammoth. Quasi-Sasquatch type without all the hang ups.

Re: Your favorite champions character

My favorite character of mine would have to be Iron Maiden. I like her enough to have played her in two or three campaigns, and am about to start playing her in another online campaign. PLUS, she's been the protagonist of a number of published stories and will be in more.
