Just what the title sez: For those of you running or playing in Fantasy Hero games...how are you doing magic items? Got any cool examples of items from your games? Here's one I handed out a few sessions back: https://sites.google.com/view/aetherya/home/aetheyrian-hero/iiiiitems-so-that-i-may-roleplay/the-doomblade How about the rest of you? Classic D&D item clones? Weird stuff? Normal stuff? Genre stuff? Hero-ey stuff?

While this is not strictly Fantasy Hero, and is maybe not even strictly fantasy, it is certainly fantasy related! And I would imagine, of interest to Fantasy Hero players. Jason Timmermans documents his build of a leather gauntlet, here (his leather hardening technique published separately on his page here). It is beautiful, functional, and badass! I believe he intends to, at some point, build a full suit of leather armor; his testing of samples (photo included in the page) shows a broadhead hunting arrow that would normally go through a deer, including bone, mostly stopped by several layers of his hardened leather. Not completely, mind you; slightly ove…

Working on GenCon conversions, yadda, yadda. SO I've gotten all the cleric spells converted. I've got all the descriptions done. Things are going pretty well and I am happily months ahead of schedule. However, I was pre-proofing the HD builds and I have a quandry, so I'm tossing it out to y'allz for feedback. So obviously 1st Edition AD&D had it's issues. As much as we loved it, we also hated it. The concept of THAC0 never sat well (why does armour stop you from getting hit?) and the balance issues around race (elves can only go to level 10 because they are too flightly to progress beyond that level...errr what?), but one of the biggest proble…

I might just be missing something in the rules here... Darkness is a Constant power and it says you can create and maintain as many of them as you like and can pay End for. If I take "Only Costs End to Activate" can I then create as many bubbles of darkness as I can pay End for and have them remain active until the next time the character sleeps\gets knocked out? That's seems right by my reading. And is pretty cool. But also a bit gross in some contexts.

How would you build a backstabbing power? Traditionally in either OSR or many modern variations, the thief, if undetected, can do lots of damage on an undetected strike with a melee weapons. Obviously the first notion is hit locations, and perhaps buy some penalty skill levels to hit vital stuff, but that doesn't require stealth. Maybe extra DC's, requires a weapon, only from stealth? Any thoughts? I don't see anything in Fantasy Hero and a quick search of the forums got me not much.

All the old religions used to be new at one point, right? I'm trying to design a religion for a progressive kingdom. 1) The royal family has for decades rewarded, in various ways, the people who come up with innovations which make life easier, less expensive, healthier, etc. 2) The government has recruited the best and brightest to get free education at universities which act as think tanks. The ones who come up with their own innovations (which are marketable) are often set up to manage a government-owned shop which creates and markets those items. In some cases where the item is universally useful, the government might mandate that ev…

I know that active membership on this board is nothing like it used to be, but it was the best place I could think of to ask this question. I am looking for the owner of a character. This character was created for Fantasy HERO back when HERO Games was in its third edition (making that technically the first edition of Fantasy HERO). The character was Cedric Varznk- Carpathian Mountaineer. STR: 18 DEX 18 CON 22 BODY: 12 INT: 18 EGO: 10 PRE: 10 (odd, for a guy with 18 STR and 22 CON. I mean, that _sounds_ pretty dadgum impressive!) COM: 14 PD6 / ED 6 REC: 8 END 44 STUN: 32 …

I'm trying to work in a variation of Lesser Restoration for one of my converted D&D tables. The D&D version of the spell removes the poisoned, diseased, blinded and paralyzed conditions. I thought about doing a transform, but the active point cost of reliably landing a Major Transform on 15-20 BOD allies would be very high. Either that or they have to spam it a few times for it to work. Alternately, I considered using a variation of Life Support: Usable by Others vs. Poison & Disease that lasts for a few hours (normally long enough to outlast a poison and maybe a GM handwave on the disease). I'm hoping you have …

I was perusing through the 6E bestiary book and came across the entry for Centaurs. It's got two arms and four legs, but it wasn't built with Extra Limbs. Whenever I see an entry for a creature with a tail, it's usually bought as an Extra Limb with Limited Manipulation. Does this mean that having an extra pair of horse legs, presumably with extremely limited manipulation ability, doesn't then require paying for Extra Limbs? Are extra legs not actually Extra Limbs?

I'm developing a fantasy world created by four elemental gods. Each god has their own chosen race, and a distinct style of magic. All magic has Requires Skill Roll, and the distinction is enforced by -1/2 of limitations exclusive to each style. Players are also be free to apply generic limitations like Limited Casting(Charges) and Increased END Cost. Earth magic requires a different Reusable Foci for each spell. Air magic requires Incantations and/or Gestures. Fire magic requires Expendable Components. Water magic is where my problem lies. Concentration and Extra time seem thematically (calm) appropriate limitations, but also seem …

Hello to all, A question for GM, I'm going to start a campaign this summer and I'm working on it. For the sake of history one of the players will play a considerably powerful noble, a viscount. When players decide to play noblemen, how do you manage their possessions? For the currency and the titles, the players pay in charaters points but for its castle for example, how do you proceed? The player pays with his character points the castle ? Or castle enter in the category of equipment? Steph

Friends and I are going to be starting a low power hero fantasy game. We play 5th ed. Everyone wants to scoop a level of combat luck on account of how useful it is. But I feel like theres a problem. 3rPD from combat luck, plus some armor, lets say we get 4 from it. Thats 7 rPD, isnt this too much? Its impossible to do body damage with the average 1d6 weapon. I understand there are ways to bump up the weapon damage (extra str, deadly blows, etc...) but the average person is going to be incapable of hurting you save from stun damage. I wanted to see if anyone else has any experience, or thoughts on the subject. Ideas? Am I making a problem out of nothing?

I'm trying to find the artists names that did the various Fantasy Hero Source books. Is there a list of who those artists are? Links to their stores that sell their for bonus points.

In most fantasy, dwarves love axes and elves love bows. I'm creating a new fantasy race and need a little help choosing an appropriate cultural weapon. They prefer hot and dry climates, homeland is a large desert with volcanoes at one edge. Cultural magic is fire-based. Flora tends to be very limited, Fauna is mostly lizard like, and most are some degree of toxic or poisonous. Materials are likely bone, shell/scale, obsidian and glass, plus anything refined from desert sand. Culturally, they tend to be self serving and manipulative. Probably small or concealable, but being able to strike the opponent from behind is good.

I know prophecies, warnings, and omens are an integral part of most fantasy campaigns -- after all. they were important in LOTR. But what if the prophecy that sends the PCs towards a quest was false, or if it was somebody's psychotic delusion? "He's the Chosen One" is a common prophecy. And of course, by the time he realizes nobody chose him, he'll have made such great strides that he is already a hero. But how does such a hero react to the revelation that he wasn't originally all that important? "(insert person or group here) will destroy the world!" almost goes without saying. It can be pointed at just about anybody -- regardless of their actual …

I'd like to pick all y'all's brains, please. I'm particular to a magic system where master craftsmen can create magic items, in a world I'd like to call on the low end of High Fantasy. I'd like to expand on the Fine Weapons and Fine Armors rules in Fantasy Hero (5E, but I guess 6E has a similar lists). No really over-the-top effects, but handy none the less -- you know, cloaks with bonuses to Concealment rather than invisibility. Items should be semi-rare, with perhaps one per group member, and the creation of one taking a substantial amount of time -- months -- and not being routine; a master blade smith can forge a broadsword of demon slaying once in their career, and t…

In this magic system , spells can be "broken down" into three general categories -- Low Level, Middle Level, and High Level. The parameters vary based on the power level of the caster themselves; what counts as a Low Level spell for a Master may well be a High Level spell for an Apprentice. Basic Idea Breakdown: All spells require an OAF Personal Focus -- fairly straightforward concept, could be a staff, or wand, or big ol' Eye Of Agamotto-looking pendant. Spells that are Middle Level and higher require what I call a Specific Focus, which are needed to cast that specific spell, or possibly a small group of spells (the Multipowers in Superheroi…

Hi all. I've just updated my primer designed to introduce players (especially D&D players) to Fantasy Hero. You can find it here: https://www.herogames.com/forums/files/file/367-fantasy-hero-primer/ I would have just bumped the old thread where we originally hashed it out, but the fabulous archive feature prevents this. I don't intend to keep updating it on any sort of schedule, but if anyone finds any errors or has any suggestions that don't require too much page count / rewriting I'd be happy to consider them (for instance, I was going through the previous thread and saw someone talking about shield bashing, and added that in).

I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advice on how to balance uneven Maxima with other things. Like for example what if I wanted to make two race packages be similarly powerful, and want to do this by giving a generous maxima to one (say, a high threshold for strength) and an ability to another (say, some amount of Shapeshift). Does anyone have any useful guidelines to follow for that? Like maybe a converted cost for a race package having a higher maxima then other races, that I could then compare to the cost of a static ability? For context I should probably discuss one of the more extreme cases of this that I want to do. So I'm creating a bun…

Has anyone run or played in Fantasy Hero scenarios where the point is to investigate a crashed starship or other science fictional elements? If so how did it go? What source materials did you use?

Just noticed the good value for Fantasy Hero books in the store right now. $13.50 for Valdorian Age, Atlantan Age or Turakian Age and Grimoires - that is for book AND pdf. My only problem is that being in the UK means that a $27 bargain (VA and a Grimoire) requires $37.50 postage which takes it back from MUST buy to need to find spare cash... The fact they are 5th edition should not put any of you off from exploiting this, the pdf on its own is $10. Get yourself some dead tree HERO.
