Here is the premise: Attacker animates the targets shadow, the shadow attacks the target. Originally I was gonna try the summon route, but then it occurred to me that an area effect entangle w/a linked STR drain would accomplish the desired effect. The shadows would just be sfx of the power. The build looks like this: 5d6 Entangle AOE radius (x2 area) +1 1/4 Selective +1/4 Target must be close enough to the ground to cast a shadow at least half the size of the target -1/4 Gestures -1/4 Active points: 125 real cost: 83 4d6 Drain (STR) delayed return rate (5 pts/min) +1/4 Linked (Entangle) -1/2 Active points: 50 real cost: 33 …

I'm going to take a stab at something I think doesn't help the Hero System and its popularity. I'm going to do this, because I think if it is agreed that this is a problem that doesn't help Hero System, then I think we have a possible solution. But I'm going to guage what others think on the matter before addressing solutions. Hero System is a complex system. For a GM to design games, it requires time. This is more time than your average game system. This can be viewed as a turn off to many game masters and will put them towards systems like Mutants and Masterminds which have quicker prep time. In most gaming circles I've been in anyway, you are lucky if all of…

I'm working on an NPC who is able to use his telekinesis for several things at once, if he's at short range. Right now, I'm thinking about using Extra Limbs -- Costs END, with a telekinesis SFX. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to build this? Thanks.

A one shot game, that is. Le’me explain. I’m heading back down to Philly (one of the places I went to college), then to Baltimore for a few days at the end of the month. Now, as I’ll finally be seeing my old ‘Philly gang’ gamer buddies again, and I promised to run them through a Hero game, so they can finally see what I was complaining about during all those D&D and Gurps games. Now, I was originally going to spend a few days hanging around in Philly before we all head down to Otakon in Baltimore. Unfortunately, emergency family crap has once again obstructed gaming, and I’ll only be there for maybe a day. So the three or four session…

Prone Problems 1 2
by Guest Black Lotus- 26 replies

This is a very simple problem. When someone falls prone, voluntarily or involuntarily, their DCV is halved. Of course, this can be advantageous if you fall prone behind Concealment, but still -- it's harder to shoot at someone when they are prone, even on flat and barren terrain. The U.S. military trains soldiers to belly-crawl, keep their heads down, etcetera for exactly this reason; hell, I did it myself in Basic. Even with no concealment, it's still harder to hit someone at range when they're prone than when they're kneeling or standing. I suppose I could just house-rule this -- as in, a prone character's DCV is halved against HTH attacks, but they retain thei…

Happiness, rainbows, puppies and all of that.... I'd like to hear from the people that are generally happy with Hero as its going now. Is anyone out there enjoying the new rules? The new books? Or running excitring campaigns in the published settings?

Two-Weapon Fighting and Ambidexterity 1 2
by Guest Black Lotus- 39 replies
All right, another simple question. I've been ignoring this until now, but I figured I'd bring it up and see what everyone else thought about it. Ambidexterity is a 1- to 3-point Talent that offsets the default -3 penalty for using an off-hand to do ANYTHING -- attack, use a skill, make a Characteristic roll with your off hand (for example, a righty grabbing a ledge with his left hand to catch a fall). This is useful in and of itself, of course. But let's consider Two-Weapon Fighting. If you purchase both Ambidexterity (at full 3-point strength) and Two-Weapon Fighting, some of the utility of Ambidexterity (or Two-Weapon Fighting, take your pick) is lost -- t…

A comment I saw while skimming through the “Lack of Fully Developed Worlds†thread mentioned having a group of people help each other develop different worlds and making them publicly available. For a long time I have been interested in developing an “Illuminati†type of setting for the HERO system but the sheer amount of work involved has kept me at the conceptualizing and planning stages. I was wondering if there was any interest out there in such a setting and if anyone out there would be willing to work with me on this. The setting I have in mind is modern day (with a slightly altered timeline) and the “Illuminati†aspect of it would be entirely invented…

For those of you not in the know, Space Dock was/is the advanced starship combat system produced by our own Steve Long for...darn, I can't remember if it was for Last Unicorn's Star TRek RPG or the Decipher version. (Oh yeah, and he GAVE it away! ) In any case, I was wondering if anyone had tried to convert it to HERO?

Before anyone asks I tried posting this over on the question board but I kept getting a Error. So I am posting it over here. Sorry for the Newbie questions first off. I did some practise runs of Fighting. Just doing Normal Damage, no Killing Damage. 1) Attacking 11 + Attackers's OCV - Defenders DCV. To hit or miss 2) I am suppose to add up all the forms of Defense. A) This is anything that adds to PD or ED. 3) Subtract the character total defense from the Stun Damage. A) 6d6 attack did 24 damage and your PD is 5. You would take 19 Stun Damage? 4) Subtract the character total defense from the Body Damage. …

I've used Acting in some cases and Persuasion in others, because I think that both are complimentary to each other. Any opinions? I don't think it's worthy of a 'new' skill, but like I said if your Acting is higher then use that, if your Persuasion is higher then use that.

So I read the FAQ, and in typical fashion, it was over explained to a point that I couldn't understand it. Let us say that my character is using a pick in FH, with a str of 10 so he just has the strength required to wield it. He would do 1d6 AP with it. I have a martial manuver that adds 2DC to the attack (which translates to 1DC for Killing attacks as per 5ed, pg 271) Do I get the full +1DC for the attack (Now making it 1d6+1 AP?) There was discussion about a variant rule for Martial Arts heavy games, but this isn't one of them...

I first came up with the idea for a "plastic man" type character. He can make the surface of his body hard and dense, but must keep his muscles very tense to do so. The result is resistent defenses that are invisible and cost END. My first thought was armor with the "costs END" limitation. But that means it's visible. Buying it invisible ends up being more expensive than the base armor which is invisible and costs no END. The obvious alternative, an invisible FF, has the same kind of problem. As GM, I can just rule that "costs END", does not imply "visible" in this case. But am I missing another solution. More generally, why does "costs END" usually imply…

Hey, You know how in many TV shows and books character have a power burst when they are emotionally stressed? It usually happen to characters with mistic/magical powers. How would you express that in HERO? Aid, Limited Power Only In emotionally stressed situation?

Hello, What do you believe would be the effect of an Armor Piercing attack against someone who has Damage Reduction? Would it cut straight through it and the DR not apply, or would you take half of the DR? I could see someone with 50% DR being hit by an AP attack and that dropping to 25%, but what about someone with 75% DR? Would it drop to 50% (the level below), change to 37-38%, or not be affected whatsoever? The same for 25%: would it drop to none (as there is no DR purchase below 25%), 12-13% or would the DR not be affected by an AP attack?

Before Adventurers Club and Digital Hero there were Hero Newsletters! Never heard of them?!? Well you can download them from my website! Go to the File Downloads page. Here is a link to John's Hero HQ. There are four newsletters, an old letter from the original Steve at Hero (aka Steve Peterson), and an old mailer. They are all worth a chuckle or two. The prices on the mailer are great! FYI. I asked Steve and Darren...they said it was ok for me to post these. Enjoy!

i can't believe there isn't a thread about this .... When the core rulebook for hero system 5th edition came out, it eventually became dubbed 'fred', a nickname to distinguish it from earlier versions. So what shall we call the new 5er, to distinguish it from 5eToB (The original book)? 'Fredr' (pronounced 'fredder')? Rev. Fred? fiver?

This is partly a rules question, partly a how-to question. How do you build a sense that doesn't provide any information by itself, but instead functions as a basis for a related group of detects? I'm trying to build a sense that's basically a sort of 'inner eye', 'mind's eye', etc. In other words, information comes in as pictures in your mind. Basically I want a sight-like sense that isn't affected by powers that target the sight group (since that's always the 1st, and usually the only, sense targeted). This is for a character in the Turakian Age setting. Obviously, this is going to function as the sense group for most of the characters detect-bas…

Talking about Move Through: in FREd, pag 258, says that "if the Attack does not cause Knockdown or Knockback, then the attacker takes full damage instead" Now, this rule is clear, and i think is fair enough. but... if in my adventure i choose to not use Knockback nor Knockdown rules... Move Through are bit suicidal!! how can simulate this effect that against a "normal person" (normal enough to survive a Move Through attack without deceasing...) is useful and takes only half damage and against a "wall or tough brick" takes full damage?
