Hi all! I recently started playing a game at which I rolled an ability that grants me intangibility, able to move through walls/ground etc, was thinking of names that are too generic, like "smoke" as my form changes from human to a shadow state. Any suggestions?

The LA Times gathered up a ton of demographic and economic data, and broke it down all the way to neighborhoods or sometimes smaller cities, in the LA metro area. It's a wonderful resource: https://maps.latimes.com/neighborhoods/index.html For example, for a character concept I'm fleshing out...I wanted a fairly high income, but also very diverse neighborhood. Hmm...flip round...yeah...South Pasadena will work. Good combination of very diverse (white, Asian, Latino anyway) and high income. It is only LA, but it's a wonderful resource if you're ok with that being where the character grew up. Most neighborhood guides don't go into a…

I’m curious about something and wanted to throw it out for discussion. For character portraits, do you prefer using an actual picture or a drawing?

Have you ever played or owned an RPG that received excellent reviews or was really liked by your friends, but you hated? While there were excellent RPGs I've owned that weren't my cup of tea in the past like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, RuneQuest, or Dragon Age, I never hated them. A few, though, stand out, but not in a good way: FATE Core System - I read a lot of good reviews and I bought some of the digital products to get started as an alternative to Champions and ICONS, but the narrative style of gaming was just too broad and vague for me. It reminded more of me playing soldier or knight in my backyard with my friends in whether or not we hit each other or …

I'm running an email game of Champions fifth edition. I consider my play-by-email experience of the game superior and more fun than when I played face-to-face. Does anyone else feel the same way? By the way, here's a link to my game ad on the forums here, still openings:

Every once in a while I come across what could best be described as a hidden RPG gem that is well-written and a solid game but got overlooked for one reason or another. My most recent hidden gem is Chaosium's Prince Valiant Storytelling Game, an RPG based off of the long-running (and still going) comic strip inspired by the legend of King Arthur. In many ways, it's like a rules-light version of Pendragon that was also written by Greg Stafford, whose love the Arthurian mythology and storytelling came through in this game book that was enhanced even more with some great art designs by Hal Foster. How about you? What hidden RPG gems have you come across?

Here's a fun exercise for our gamification pleasure. One person will state some race, class, archetype, or essentially anything else that they desire for the next person to describe. However, it cannot be used in the traditional manner, there needs to be something that is different from conventional manner. For example, a taboxoxi could be written up as some form of demon-sprung warrior. First up: elves

I recently ran the rules-light superhero RPG ICONS at a local game convention and it worked out beautifully, especially since out of the two groups of players that participated in the sessions I ran, only one had actually played role-playing games before. For the others, it was their first time ever and it was easy to explain the game mechanics and character sheet layout to them as well. Looking ahead to the next game event, though, I was thinking about running Champions and Fantasy Hero, which both have a special place in my gaming heart since I have been playing them since high school and college, respectively. I've owned and played other games (e.g. Robotech, Pendragon…

I'm asking this question because my experience with the D20 system is minimal (I briefly owned Silver Age Sentinels D20 but never played it) and never played D&D or Pathfinder. However, I know the basic mechanics involved with that use the D20 to roll for an action's success or failure based on bonuses versus a difficulty rating or opposed roll from reading a rules book or two. There's been published superhero RPGs that use the D20 system (Silver Age Sentinels D20, Vigilance) and the reviews have been mixed. On the positive note, the rules were fairly consistent with the D20 system, but the impression I got was that D20 in the superhero genre has a "square…

Greetings! No idea where the appropriate thread would be for this, thus I posted it here in this section. Dunno if there's a specific section for "character creation" in general or its a s genre specific post in forums. Personally I just create characters using the Hero System and never really think of a genre when creating them (its to me the beauty of the system). To the point at hand: Looking for some assistance creating some complications for a character. I would like to come up w/ some interesting complications for my new version a character that uses a PA (Power Armor) Focus. The PA is an alien prototype of biological-mechanical-magical nature. Imagine a bio-…

Paul Lidberg of Crunchy Frog Games has Passed Away. His wife just posted about it on Facebook. I was at their wedding years ago, because Paul gave me and Phil Morrisey a ton of illustration work for his various mini games. Paul and I hit it off. Even L. Douglas Garret did a bit of writing for Crunchy Frog Games. How he passed away, has not been specified, but A few of you grognards have probably run into him at conventions.

I often use books not related to gaming as reference guides for my campaigns. I have a ton of MERP material for my Middle-earth campaign, but if I didn't I would be okay using just Karen Wynn Fonstad's work, The Atlas of Middle-earth and Robert Foster's book, The Complete Guide to Middle-earth. Likewise, I can use Bulfinch's Mythology and Le Morte D'Arthur as primary sources. Encyclopedias are handy resources. I once used an old edition of Encyclopedia Britannica to find out information for my Castle Falkenstein game. Has anyone else done the same thing? If so, which sources have you used?

Does anyone know where I can find "usable" deck plans for 20s-40s merchant ships? I can find literally dozens on Pinterest and similar sites. But they are all low resolution and I cannot actually read the compartment labels. Any guidance would be appreciated.
